Chapter 1

What was once vibrant and green now lay in ruins, a shadow of its former self. The bright blue sky was hidden behind thick smog, and the only living creatures were mutated forms that roamed the wasteland looking for prey. It wasn't just nature that had been devastated; cities too were destroyed or abandoned due to famine--the last remnants of society crumbling into dust on an apocalyptic landscape filled with despair and death. Brave souls ventured out into this post-apocalyptic nightmare, clutching weapons scavenged from ruined homes, searching desperately for food and shelter while avoiding whatever enemy lurked around every corner of destruction hoping to catch them.

In the near future, meteors lit up the sky with flashes of color as they poured from the night's darkness. The ground shook, and a deafening roar filled everyone's ears like thunder claps each time one struck the ground. They brought destruction, chaos-and a mysterious disease unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. It spread like wildfire, turning men into savages before their mind slowly rotted away. Women, on the other hand, were unaffected by this strange new illness. Male labor jobs are now filled with female workers, military units comprised entirely of women soldiers armed with weapons they could barely lift. After facing death together so many times, surviving women began to build a safe haven to protect themselves from the dangers of the wasteland. After years of rebuilding, the first men found their way to this new beacon, surprising the women inhabitants as for what they thought was now a world comprised of only females, was not true.

Slowly, more and more men found their way to this safe haven, and slowly, the dynamic of the haven changed. Men started demanding more and more from the women while providing less and less. Day after day, month after month, the men began to overpower the women and take what they wanted, which normally resulted in violence. Rape, kidnappings, and assault started becoming a monthly occurrence, which degraded to weekly, finally on a near day to day basis. The women devised a plan to take back what they built. After much suffering and even more planning, they took action. The women sat by and gave in to all the mens urges and desires, giving them whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it. Then, after many weeks had passed and the men became content, the women struck. Forcing many inside rooms that couldn't be unlocked from the inside, killing any who decided to take up arms, and exiled any who wouldn't cooperate.

Decades began to pass, and men were slowly granted access to more freedom. The women slowly exiled the ones that were not useful to their survival, which made the others intent on keeping their positions within the haven. Over the years, a scrappy town made of wooden huts turned into a thriving community, slowly drawing men that survived towards the haven like a beacon. The women built their ranks, and any man who wanted to join these ranks needed to prove their usefulness. Over time, the women noticed the men's numbers were creeping up to a point where they could start a rebellion and overtake the women, which forced them to put strict rules in place of how a man could enter the haven.

The first exception applies to any men born within the community. Any males born are taken to a nursery and raised by a special team until they reach the age of authorization. They are considered of age when they reach the age of fifteen and are cast out into the wastelands. Being raised by a designated team of women saves a mother from becoming attached and hiding her son within the community. The second exception pertains to goods. There is a grey zone within the community that allows people to enter under close observation and guarded in order to trade. When this happens, the people who have been granted permission may travel freely throughout the zone but may not stay. Finally, the third and most coveted route is to enter through Acceptance and become what is known as a Diver. While this is the preferred method of entry to the community, this can also prove to be the most difficult.

There are several ways to pass the Acceptance exam, each of which is difficult in its own right. The first and "easiest" way for a man seeking entry is based on luck rather than any skills they may possess. Men's numbers within the community are limited, and they will remain in order to control any rebellions that may occur. There are a total of one hundred men in the community, each with their own quarters that correspond to their class. A man with the rank of one hundred is the lowest ranking Diver, while a man with the rank of one is the highest ranking Diver. Men with ranks one through ten are classified as Sanctioned and have the authority to impose punishments and merits, as well as refer cases to higher courts if necessary. Exalted ranks range from eleven to fifty, giving them more freedom and opportunity than those below them. Finally, ranks fifty to one hundred are classified as Envoy class, the most basic type of rank. In addition to more freedom, the higher a person's rank, the more resources they are given, which can include food, women, materials, and entertainment.

The safest method for an individual to enter the ranks of the Envoys is to rely on chance. A vacancy in the ranks is created when a member of the Sanctioned, Exalted, or Envoys passes, is slain, or is exiled. If one of the Sanctioned dies, a member of the Exalted is personally chosen to fill the vacancy. The hundredth slot then becomes available as all ranks under the individual chosen for reassignment advance by one position in rank. The next qualified candidate will be appointed to fill that unfilled position as a Diver. Even though this is the safest method to enter the community, the person picked must be the first person to enter the grey zone once it opens because the position is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The hundredth position is the most treacherous, while being the safest method to enter. Although having the same privileges as the other Envoys, the person in the hundredth position is seen as the weakest link. A ten-day visa is given to the person after they start working there, giving them time to explore, take advantage of, and adjust to their new life in the community. They are then required to demonstrate that they are deserving of living in the haven. The procedure starts over if the ruling authority does not find the person to be helpful and banishes them to the wastes. But, there is another route into the community that depends more on one's own abilities and talents than on chance.
