Chapter 5 - Year One - City

INT. MASANORI´S ROOM - MORNING - DAY AFTER ENROLLMENT

Masanori’s accommodation is a traditional house in a suburb, so it is a little quieter. He is lying in his room, from which he can see Mt. Fuji. Masanori looks up at the ceiling and is lost in thought. “Damn. This Katsu seems to be stronger than I thought. I’ll definitely meet him in the tournament. I’m already lagging behind.”

Masanori tosses and turns in his bed, holding his hands to his head, stressed with thought. “Oh man!”

He sits up. Slaps his cheeks with his palms and starts to laugh. “I’m worrying too much again. I’ll manage!”.

Suddenly the doorbell rings. “I didn’t order anything, did I?”

Masanori walks to the door and opens it. Suddenly Jason bursts in, full of energy. “Hey Mori, how are you? It was really hard to find your house, it’s a bit hidden.”

As he talks, he walks into the apartment.

Masanori is overwhelmed. “W-what? How do you even know where I live?”

Jason laughs and rubs his right hand on the back of his head. “It’s all in the school system.”

Masanori is bluffed. “You shouldn’t even have access to that.”

Jason walks through the hallway and opens each door. “Which of the rooms will be mine?”

Masanori replies irritably. “None, you parasite, what do you want anyway?”

Jason yawns very exaggeratedly to show his boredom. “I’m soooooo bored Mori. Please let us go to town. I’m dyiiiiing.”

Masanori tries to brush Jason off. “I can’t, I really have a lot to do. I want to prepare for the tournament.”

Jason doesn’t let up though. “Mori, I’m serious. I’ll die if we don’t go into town now. I need you, I can’t do this without you.”

Masanori sighs. “If it has to be.”

Jason strikes a winning pose and holds his thumb up. “Marvelous! Let’s go get some ice cream.”Masanori looks at Jason. “Was that a Tekken reference?”

Jason just smiles at Masanori.

Masanori sighs, “Let’s go.”

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

EXT. TOKYO - DOWNTOWN - NOON

Masanori and Jason walk through the city. It is extremely quiet, although there are a lot of people out and about at this time of day.

They see people communicating only with the bare minimum and placing their orders in stores via displays.

Jason seems depressed. “It seems to be even worse in Japan.”

Masanori is worried. “What exactly do you mean?”

They both continue walking and Jason takes on a slightly more serious tone. “People are becoming more and more desocialized. No one has the desire to communicate with each other anymore.”

Masanori is thoughtful. “That’s exactly why I want to become the Small Talk King. I want to bring this world back together. I promised him…”

Masanori is silent and depressed.

Jason starts to laugh and tries to lighten the mood. “My wish is to finally be able to talk to women without them passing out.”

Masanori looks at Jason in shock. “What do you mean?”

Jason doesn’t answer at first.

Masanori follows up directly. “Jason, what do you mean, „passing out?“”

Jason laughs nervously. “We just have a more powerful social battery than the humans here Mori.”

We see a mother walking past them with her child. When she hears them talking, she hugs her child tightly and quickly runs away.

Jason is irritated. “WHY IS SHE RUNNING AWAY LIKE WE’RE CRIMINALS?”

Jason stops his sentence abruptly. He is focused. “We’re going for ice cream now Mori”.

Masanori is puzzled. “Huh, where did that come from all of a sudden?” He turns his head to the side and sees a young ice cream vendor. “Uh-huh.”

Jason grabs Masanori and pulls him along.

EXT. TOKYO - ICE CREAM PARLOR - NOON

Jason confidently approaches the young woman. His confidence increases with every step he takes.

The 19-year-old vendor looks at Jason and becomes nervous.

Masanori orders his ice cream. “One raspberry for me, please.”

She hands Masanori his ice cream.

Now it’s Jason’s move. “Let’s see… vanilla for me please… and then your number too, while we’re at it.”

He smiles smugly at the vendor. She looks disgusted. “Ew.”

Jason is shocked. “I’ll just have chocolate then.”

Masanori looks at Jason. “I don’t think that was because of the ice cream flavor.”

Masanori turns to the vendor. “I’m sorry about that. He has a serious disability.”

Masanori grabs Jason and walks away with him.

EXT. TOKYO - BACK ALLEY - NOON

Masanori turns to Jason. “Were you really just going to the ice cream parlor to hit on the vendor?”

Jason takes on a serious look. “Look, Mori… Yes.”

Masanori holds his hand in front of his face, annoyed. “I’m going home.”

Jason becomes frantic. “WAIT!”

Masanori stops. “What?”

Jason is overwhelmed. “Uh, I don’t know, I didn’t think I’d get this far.”

Their conversation is interrupted by screams.

Both run off immediately. As they run around the corner, a muscular boy over 2 meters tall wearing a Small Talk Academy uniform walks past them.

Masanori gives him a quick glance, but immediately runs on.

Masanori and Jason arrive in the alley and can’t believe their own eyes. 7 thugs lie injured on the ground.

One thug with a conspicuous Elvis Presley hairstyle is still in his right mind, but still injured.

Masanori runs to him. “What happened?”

The rowdie holds on to Masanori’s shirt. “H-how can someone have such a powerful-” He coughs up blood. “S-social battery?” and falls over, unconscious.

Jason calls an ambulance.

Masanori looks into the side alley they came from. “He’s supposed to have won alone against seven people in small talk? What kind of wall is that?”
