34. Not a Lapdog?

Wolves much smaller than the first one they killed slinked out of the greenery. The first one they ended had been the size of a real wolf from earth. These barely even reached the size of a beagle.

At Least eight of the monsters entered the clearing after them. They called to each other in quiet yips, communicating some unknown command.

Drew rotated around them to lessen the load he would have to fight when a loud neigh startled him from his side.

He ducked and rolled out of the way as the blue monster rushed in from behind them.

The prey both groups of predators had been stalking stole both their attention away. The gross creature had missed Drew on its charge out of the water and began to rush at the pack of wolves that were now blocking its escape into the forest.

The bravery of the small creatures proved foolhardy as the larger monster shirked off the arm blows and crushed a few of them as it ran for safety.

Despite the loss of some of their friends, the wolves gave up on the blue beast and advanced on the smaller pair.

“Why is everything so damn bloodthirsty here?” Nurgle clanked his cleavers together and taunted them closer. “Stop it! You’re part of the problem!”

Drew readied his blade as the monsters grew closer to them. They got within spitting distance and exploded into motion.

The human-like strength of his cyclops friend negated most of the danger he faced as one of the wolves clamped onto him with its scythes. He chopped the limbs off with his free hand and pried them off where they still grasped his torso

The fear of death by scythe dropped from his mind. Now he only needed to fear being mauled to death by the pack of rabid beasts.

Drew rushed in to give him back up and finished the wolf that flailed around with no arms.

The next enemies rushed in as a pair that quickly perished to the combined efforts of the duo. A thrust of Drew’s sword and chops of Nurgles cleavers ended them before they could even react. The clear difference in ability between the two sides should have been obvious to everything around, but apparently the wolves refused to accept it.

The remaining 4 wolves ran in together in the hopes of overwhelming the pair. A stray kick crushed the ribcage of one, while a quick stab killed another. The last two wolves approached Nurgle with no caution or fear for their lives. He quickly ended them before they could even react to his attacks.

Two flying cleavers lodged themselves in their small heads, dropping them to the ground mid stride.

The fight ended quickly once the beasts flung themselves into danger. The clearing was littered with the bodies of their enemies leaving them to take what they wanted.

“You think this meat is any good? I don’t know if I want to try out dog meat. Though, I guess protein is protein, right Nurgle?” Drew began skinning and gutting the closest mutt and waited for his little friend to come over .

Half way through the process, he felt a light tapping on his boot. A glance back showed Nurgle staring off into the forest while trying to get his attention.

“What? There’s nothing there.” Drew looked into the greenery and didn’t see anything to be worried about. The tapping sped up despite nothing changing. “Dude, chill. There isn’t anything there.”

Nurgle grabbed his shoe and tried dragging him away from the corpse.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“What? Stop it. We can leave after I finish cleaning this meat.” Drew tried finishing the corpse when a shiver ran up his spine.” That’s disconcerting.”

He looked back to the woods and lowered himself to the ground to hide behind the small wolf as much as possible. The effort quickly proved worthless as a glowing set of eyes stole his attention.

He had been looking much too low to see the large red dots that now hung high in the forest.

They followed him as he tried to make himself smaller and smaller to avoid its gaze. Despite his efforts, he knew the ploy was bound to fail. He raised his sword up and readied himself for the combat to come.

As he arose to his feet, the large eyes also climbed higher and higher. They finally stopped a few feet above Drew’s eye level.

“Oh shit.” Drew looked for routes of escape they could use but came up with none as the monster stepped into the clearing.

The size difference between the omega and beta wolf was sizable. The difference between the beta and this thing was even more absurd.

It had to have been heavier than a draft horse with prey mantis limbs large enough to cut them in half.

The dark grayish green fur reflected light in weird ways to make it difficult to see even once it was fully out of the forest and the large human torso size head snarled viciously at the pair that stood opposite of it.

The beast was only eclipsed in size by the behemoth parakeet chimera they had defeated days prior.

The wolf approached them with the gate of a king, completely uncaring for anything that they might do. The swagger of each step sapped the confidence that remained in its opponents.

The regal air called for its prey to submit for death, yet the pair refused.

Drew grabbed his small friend with one arm and held his blade before him with the other.

The standoff that he tried to force did not manifest as the wolf approached him despite the razor sharp blade pointed towards his muzzle.

The carefree attitude forced Drew back to the water's edge. With nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, fighting was their only option. The strange bipedal walk moved it closer and closer by the second.

It was ten feet away when it slowed down, getting ready to strike the pair before they could fight back.

The silence dominated the clearing with each heavy thudding footstep shaking the pair down for all hope they had.

The monstrous wolf raised its claws ever so slightly, signaling their incoming death.

Seconds before the strike ended them, the wolf was knocked off balance by a powerful blow to the side followed by a loud cracking noise of the shot ringing off.

Drew looked up to the cliff side in the distance and saw Sapphire leaning over the edge pointing in their direction. He did a double take between the world and Sapphire before bursting into motion.

He was not going to lose this life saving gift. The monster was already rolling over to recover from the powerful blow in a bid to right itself to continue its business. The shortened distance between the mortal enemies gave them the perfect chance to turn the tide of battle.

Drew ran towards the massive beast and grabbed onto it in much the same way Nurgle had done to the first. The blade he carried sunk itself deep into the side of the beast causing blood to flood from its wounds.

The burst of pain shocked the massive monster into action. It attempted to dislodge them from its back using its scythe-like appendages. The tips curled around the sides of its body but failed to reach them.

Drew dug and twisted the blade in the monster's torso, causing as much damage as possible. The blender action inside of its body sent it panicking around the clearing.

It jumped on its hind legs to free itself of the painful passengers and swung its body side to side.

The blade stayed deep inside the wound, Keeping Drew anchored to its side. Nurgle held his cleavers in one hand and grabbed the long fur in his other to scale the massive body.

The monster ran for the forest and slammed its body into the large trees that flanked the sandy shores.

Drew held strong against the impacts, refusing to let the sword leave his grasp. A small banana type tree exploded as the monster threw its side into it, causing its human rider to lose his breath.

The ramming and threshing caused the blade to turn its side into a bloody and gory mess

Despite all of the pain and bleeding the monster had accrued, it hopped a dozen feet into the air and succeeded in bucking Drew off with the sword slicing out of its side.

By sheer luck, he landed on a tree limb mid-fall. He sucked in air through clenched teeth as he righted himself to look for what was happening below him.

The wolf had stopped its rush to throw him off and sniffed the air for some hidden scent.

With every intake of air, its head raised higher and higher up until it stared directly at him.

Its bloodthirsty eyes glared at him down as it approached the tree that acted as his life line.

“I hope this thing bleeds out in the next five seconds.” Drew mused to himself as the wolf thrusted its scythe appendages at the tree trunk. The massive arms gashed inches of wood out and sent tremors rushing up the tree.
