18. Dirty Little Monkey

18. Dirty Little Monkey

Sapphire and Nurgle struggled for hours together. She was too driven to prove her abilities and he was too stubborn to pay any attention to her attempts.

Changing from actual tries at teaching him to speak English to setting up other ways to communicate yielded zero results. It really went to show how both parties must want something for a positive outcome to arrive.

Drew sat on the sidelines waiting for something to happen. After the first few hours and his statements being proven correct , he quickly grew tired of the mental struggle they were having.

He definitely enjoyed having someone to actually talk to and found that the relative silence before her arrival got him quite used to not having to converse with anyone but himself.

Maybe it was a good thing that he finally had company. He wasn’t really sure how this would change things, but having someone willing to talk to was probably beneficial.

“Master, are you sure this thing is fit to be in your service? How could one so dull be of any real use?” The exasperated Sapphire waddled over to Drew and espoused her problems.

“He has saved my life a number of times and he’s a strong fighter. Plus, he has been with me since the beginning. I’m not getting rid of him now.”

The refusal saddened his new companion, but she seemed to understand. Drew inspected the plushy a little more and saw the weird tongue appendage that hung out of her mouth would alternate between twitching and waving in smooth motions. It was definitely strange looking, almost parasitic in appearance.

“So…where did you come from?”

“The magic circle. I was not conscious nor alive until you brought me into the world. For this, I am eternally grateful.” The flowery and heartfelt message was interrupted by a thud as Nurgle slammed down onto the ground in frustration at the conversation. “You can not even utter a word, yet you have yet to cease annoying me. Congratulations.”

The pair really did not get along from Drew’s point of view. Sapphire gave off the air of a loyal servant that just wanted to make his life better while Nurgle seemed to be selfish and warmongering.

They appeared to be complete opposites. Not entirely unsurprising but the bickering was not at the top of his list of enjoyable background noises.

Drew and Sapphires conversations wandered to various topics, ranging from food and water to how much knowledge she actually came with about the world. The answers almost all came out as a denial of certainty which seemed to irk the little plushy to no end.

What good was she if she could not answer a single question he proposed was the only question that seemed to play at her mind.

Deciding to ease her out of the depressing talk and more towards her stated tactical purpose, Drew interrogated her for opinions.

“Hey, Sapphire. What do you think we should do? I wasn’t really given much of a goal or anything. I kind have just been getting experience and trying to stay alive. It's been really tiring honestly.” The plushy pondered on the question her master proposed.

“I believe you are doing exactly what you must. Survival is a necessity to complete whatever nebulous goal the reigning goddess has awarded you. You are performing exceptionally well in my opinion. You have raided a dungeon, leveled a skill significantly, and managed to stave off the elements without external help. Truly impressive.”

The praise she offered brought some joy to Drew’s outlook on their future. To hear such straightforward and positive opinions on his performance in this unknown world was nothing short of an ego boost.

“That's good. Great even. Well, the day is just ahead of us and I kinda want to see what you're capable of. So, are you ready? We are gonna be right behind you as back up.”

Nurgle sat up at the prospect of combat and Sapphire took on a pensive looking expression. It was hard to tell given the inhuman feature that dominated her figure, but she appeared to want to speak up.

“Go ahead. Say what's on your mind.” Drew urged on, hoping to get her to voice her troubles.

“I would not say that I am particularly made for front line combat. I am more of a backline sniper of sorts. I stay out of direct combat and pick off vulnerable enemies to reduce the strain on the frontline. I believe that is how we will have our most success.”

“That works. I wasn’t really expecting you to start bashing brains in from the start. We just gotta find where you fit in.” After he assured the plushy, she seemed to relax and stand at attention.

“Let's get going then. We’ll see if we can find something to hunt in the jungle nearby.”

The new trio started down the trail, slowly at first with both summons walking behind Drew. After scooping them up in each arm, the pace dramatically increased and they traveled into the green underbrush that housed this world’s violent fauna.

The noises came at them nonstop. Some new to Drew and others less so offered a wealth of information of the creatures nearby according to Sapphire.

A lapse in the calls from one bird could mean the presence of another. The random periods of short silence could mean strong predators were nearby.

The small nuances of the wilderness was a little more apparent with someone whispering in your ear with their weird trunk appendage.

They followed the cliff that made the waterfall for a few minutes before breaking off into the jungle. The journey came to an abrupt end not too long after beginning. Sapphire tapped on Drew’s shoulder and motioned ahead through some particularly dense brush.

He poke his head through the bushes and stared at the creature sitting barely 5 feet in front of him. Drew recoiled in disgust at the sight that welcomed him. It was a normal looking monkey just sitting there with its dick in his hand, masturbating while staring directly at him.

“You dirty bitch!” The shout from Drew brought the attention of all creatures nearby straight to them. The jungle came alive in woops, screams, and hoos. Branches shook high up in the trees and the monkey across from the trio started going crazy at the intrusion.

“Screw this!” Not ready to hack some monkeys to pieces, Drew back pedaled through the bushes in hopes that they could get away from whatever storm had awakened in the canopy.

The noises from above got louder and louder like a wave of monkeys were approaching them at speed. The trip eventually ran into the cliff that they had followed away from the dungeon and they quickly began traveling along in an attempt at finding safety from whatever was crashing through the trees.

They came to an abrupt stop when the cliff was met with a massive fallen tree, 10 feet in diameter. The makeshift wall and cliffside made for a trap the trio unknowingly allowed themselves to fall into.

"How did we miss this? We didn't even go that far!"

"I believe we got turned around when fleeing the monkey, master." The ever helpful Sapphire explained the new problem to her master and scanned the surroundings

The noises had died down now that they had stopped, but the branches continued cracking. Gone were the animals noises that herded them to this small clearing blocked on two sides, replaced by shuffling and knocking of a rapidly encircling group of monsters.

“I would really like to not die right now.” Drew’s plea fell on deaf ears as the rustling of leaves grew in volume from right outside the clearing.

“This is quite unfortunate. I had just been named and now I am going to die. Slightly funny.” The plushy seemed noncommittal to the idea of death and faintly lamented the situation.

Nurgle seemed to gain a newfound burst of energy from their impending doom that grew closer with each second. He hopped out of Drew’s hands and clanged his weapons together as a show of metal to the monster tide that would be arriving any time now.

Out of the green sea in front of them, a troop of monkeys lumbered out in two single file lines. The strange procession gave them a great view of their numbers.

“Master, there are roughly thirty of them so far. Our chances of fighting back and winning against the whole force are near zero. I recommend suicide, do not give them the satisfaction.” The absurd elephant sat atop his shoulder and spouted his entire thought process save for the last part.

“No way am I dying to a bunch of self pleasuring monkeys. I’m gonna brain as many as I can till they take me out.” They had backed up to where the tree and cliff met to make their final stand.

The two lines of monkeys took up a position similar to a royal guard and proceeded to hoot and holler in a strange song. The foliage once again rattled as something came forward.
