33. Picking Them Off

33. Picking Them Off

I watch as Gael veils himself and the rest of the group to become nothing more than a blur in the dark.

We silently creep closer to the building with the warp pad station inside. As we thought the building is absolutely swarming with soldiers of all tiers. Alongside the soldiers are a good amount of people walking in and out of the large building, each being furiously scanned and questioned multiple times.

Once we reach a small alleyway, Uncle Moren speaks quietly,

“Okay, from here on out, we are gonna split up. That includes you Rowan, we’re putting a lot of trust in you to only deal with situations you can handle.”

“Right.” I confirm out loud as he can’t see my nod.

“Now, with these veils Gael has placed on us, it should be next to impossible for anyone blow tier 7 to notice us, but that doesn’t mean you can get careless. Stick to the plan, and only take out individual soldiers at a time. Remember to make sure you can’t take them out quickly, the less noise, the better.” Uncle Moren declares.

I assume everyone nods at this, though I can’t really tell, what with the veil and all that.

“Gael says this should last about an hour or so, as long as you don’t take any direct hits. Good luck out there guys, and remember to meet up back here if any sort of wide scale alarm goes off.”

This cause multiple whooshing sounds to ring out around me before it suddenly turns quiet.

‘Well, nothing more to do but to get to it I suppose.’ I sigh out mentally.

I begin my slow walk towards the building. Once I’m there, I’m astounded by the fact that none of the soldiers directly in front of me can see me. It’s one thing to be told your practically invisible, but it’s a completely different thing to actually BE invisible.

‘No wonder Gael said this skill is on a half year cooldown, this would practically trivialize low-level infiltration. Gael even said the cooldown gets lower the higher tier he gets!’

With my astonishment behind me, I swiftly and deftly hop the outer wall and enter the main courtyard.

Looking at the building up close is almost jaw-dropping, and not really in a good way. It looks as if some sort of ai combined every single detail of some of the greatest buildings from around the old-world, and melded them together.

Size-wise, the thing is ginormous, easily one of the largest buildings in the whole city, being about three quarters as large as Progenitor Waylen’s mansion.

According to Uncle Moren, that’s about right, as the system generates these warp pad buildings based on ‘popular’ architecture from earth. I had no clue it would be so… eclectic though.

I look around in search of my first target. Almost immediately I find it. A stern looking young man, who must be around my age, if not a few years older.

Following him reveals that he is heading for the bathroom. This causes a wave of guilt to run through my mind. I push it down quickly though, in favor of sweet sweet apathy.

‘I’ll try to make it quick.’ I say to myself.

Surprisingly, time only made the people I’ve killed run through my mind more and more. It seems I’m just fully used to the idea of killing people based on trivial things such as factions or sides.

I ignore the useless thoughts running through my mind and focus on my target. After a little less than a minute of walking, my target reaches his destination and enters inside, with myself entering swiftly behind him.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

As he begins to enter the stall, I swoop in above him before he can undo his pants, and slice sideways, causing a large, lethal gash to form where his jugular is. Before the blood gets too messy, I grab his head, and stick his neck overtop of the toilet, preventing any blood from reaching the floor.

I hold his head there until he quietly passes away. I do myself the favor of not looking at his face at all, as to prevent to many memories from forming that I’d rather not remember.

After a minute or so, I prop his body on the toilet in a way that allows all the blood to continue to flow into the porcelain throne.

‘Definitely not the way I’d like to go, that’s for sure.’ I sigh to myself.

I continue my exploration of the building, and after a few minutes of walking, I stumble upon what seems to be tens of higher tier soldiers guarding the main warp pad.

I watch as they interrogate and search every person entering and leaving using the pad multiples of times before they are allowed to either leave or use the passage.

Most of the people using the pad are incredibly wealthy, as using warp pads cost millions of credits for someone not associated directly with the Empire. Apparently in the Kingdom, while it does cost a good amount, it’s nowhere near the absurd price the Empire charges.

I decide to back away slowly, as Gael and Uncle Moren informed me multiple times of the types of wards that are standard around these things, and if they are to be believed, if even one of my hairs gets to close, I’m a dead man ten times over.

After another few minutes of wandering, I once again find a target suitable for me. This one seems to be about tier 3 or so, and at least thirty years old. The tired, unfocused look in his eyes as he walks around the perimeter of the building makes for what should be an easy elimination.

Once he walks far enough from any other patrols, I once again make my move, this time decapitating him in one feel swoop.

As much as I would like to celebrate the increase in my mastery levels, there is ticking time-bomb at my feet known as a dead-body, and I need to get rid of it quick before someone comes over here.

I pick up the body and find a nearby bush to set it in. Someone would probably find in in a couple hours or so when it starts to deteriorate, but there won’t be a couple hours anyway so who am I to care?

After my quick body disposal, I run back to where I killed him and rub away all the blood in the dirt with my feet. While not perfect, it’ll have to do.

‘Let’s just hope no one looks too closely at the floor.’

Resuming my perusal of the building, I find myself wondering what the rest of the group are up to.

‘How many have they been able to take out?’ I ask myself.

Gael’s POV

I end the tier 6 man quickly before shoving him in my dimensional space. This is something not even Moren knows I have, and I have to say it is quite useful.

I mentally look inside the ten-foot cube to see six bodies above tier 5, and four bodies below that.

‘Not too bad for an old man like myself.’ I say mentally.

I look around the large complex once more.

‘I have to say, there are a lot less soldiers here than I thought there’d be. I assumed it be in the five-hundreds but I’d be surprised if there are half that here. Something must be going on, but what…’

After I’m done ruminating, I use one of my signature skills to teleport behind an unsuspecting tier 5 soldier, and quickly shove a dagger into his heart.

‘Welp, whatever it is that’s going on, I just hope we can survive it.’

Uncle Moren’s POV

I end the middle-aged man with a my precise blow skill, punching straight into his heart.

I stuff the body haphazardly into a nearby closet and place a towel to on the floor of the door to prevent any blood from leaking out.

‘Number five down, hopefully I can get a few more before they start figuring out what’s happening.’ I think to myself.

As I wander through the building, I can’t help but feel guilty yet again for getting us into this situation. While I may have told Rowan that the mission we were attempting to complete was for money, and to be fair there was a good amount of valuables in that safe too, what I really needed was the a piece of high level magitech purchased straight from the Empire’s capital.

I’m not sure exactly what it does yet, but I’m hoping that when I get back to the kingdom, they can hopefully shed some light on it.

All I know about it is its value, and from what I can gather, It’s worth a lot, and I mean a lot.

How the hell that asshole Waylen managed to get his hands on it is anyone’s guess, but from the shitstorm he’s been causing in the Empire’s higher circles, he’s definitely pissed about it.

Suddenly, a loud, blaring alarm breaks me out of my train of thought.

‘Goddamnit! What the hell happened?! I thought we had at least a little more time!’ I exclaim to myself before quickly escaping before the revealing arrays come online.

As I retreat through the building, I notice the increased number of soldiers around me.

‘Must be easily double, maybe even triple the number of soldiers we saw when we got here! What the hell is going on!?’
