04 - Prose Edda

“Surt the warlord was reknowned throughout the land of Midgard as the meanest, nastiest elfin knight to go rogue. Once a friend of the dwarves, a bad deal with the dragons sent this once peaceful elf on a downward spiral into oblivion (known as Niffleheim in this context) and back with one of the weapons of legend ‘Ragnarok’ the flaming sword. This weapon alone created the land of Muspell and separated a region of Niffleheim into a flaming disaster (Muspell). Midgard was unaware of what was to happen, but bad dealings with Thor and Loki meant that Loki would become an insider and regularly snitch about happenings from within the kingdom. In turn, Loki would use his cover to learn of things abroad to report back to King Odin himself. The only catch was, Loki was loyal to no-one save for himself.”

“War is always brewing between the land of Midgard and Muspell, with the dead always always awaiting their repentance in the land of Niffleheim. Perhaps only that ancient creature known as Angerboda would know for certain if another land could exist – rumors chant of a heaven known as Valhalla and Asgard, one a place for great warriors, and another for loyal members of the life tree ‘Ymir’. Angerboda herself is little more than an ancient legend, but the land of Midgard also thought that ‘Ragnarok’ was just a piece of steel lodged within the bowels of Niffleheim.”

“It seems different weapons of legend can be found throughout Middle Earth, but only five have been known to exist – Ragnarok, Mjolnir, Gekki and Frekki (Hunger and Strife) and Crimson Strife. Ragnarok is owned by Surt and is said to be able to bring about the fate of the gods dubbed ‘Ragnarok’ after the sword of the same name. The sword is said to have the power of a comet, where as Mjolnir is the sword’s rival in strength and said to have the powers and weight of Earth itself. Only a certain glove and belt combination would ever be able to wield Mjolnir. Gekki and Frekki are short swords dubbed ‘Hunger and Strife’ and are said to be wielded by the Grimson Wolf, a creature of lore and legend that appears only in times of vanity when ill tidings abode. The Grimson Wolf is similar to the black hound of British literature and architecture of the same; Crimson Strife is the long sword paired with Gekki and Frekki and brings about a fate far worse than death – as if legend couldn’t be strenuous – Crimson Strife causes internal bleeding until the afflicted can stand no more. It is a weapon that absorbs the soul and very life force of the afflicted. This energy is contained and will be released when Ragnarok runs afowl. Only when Ragnarok and Mjolnir clash and merge into one weapon will Ragnarok begin. For now, this remains just an ominous rumor; but with as much as Thor and Surt clash hands, time will tell if the Earth shakes from Mjolnir’s chagrin and burns asunder from Ragnarok’s evil tail.”

“Shakespeare spoke of Avalon and the king and queen of the elves ‘Oberon and Titania’. One trickster of the fairyfolk is a one ‘Puck’. What might be a midsummer’s night dream in the world of Avalon is actually more playful compared to the ill tidings that run afoot in Middle Earth. As if seemlingly divided by Bifrost itself, Avalon exists separate from Middle Earth as we know it – it lies amidst Asgard, but unlike Asgard’s heavenly vane, Avalon is very much real and very much teaming with mystical wild creatures. If the humans exist in Midgard, then Asgard is heaven of the other worldly sense, Muspell is hell on Middle Earth, Niffleheim is land of the dead beyond the Aurora (which always floats to the east), and Avalon exists so far beyond this world that it exists in legend only; yet if Surt is one of the elves, surely Avalon is beyond legend and more than reality. Svartalfheim exists between Niffleheim, Middle Earth and borders Muspell. It is a land plunged in darkness with the only light being provided by the stars of the sky, the flames of Muspell, and the Aurora itself. Svartalfheim seemingly floats above ice and water melted by Muspell and provided by Niffleheim. In this flying earth fortress surrounded by ice exists a dark skinned fairfolk of ancient lore dubbed Svartelves or ‘Dark Elves’ for their black to violet skin and dark demeanor. To a dark elf, mischief and enchantment know no bounds – their punishment is eternal atonement within their dwelling – they have no escape save for Mjolnir’s might and Ragnarok’s biting flame. The mountainous region of Moria exists to the north and contains a similar society to the dark elves, but composed entirely of dwarves known for weapon smithing. Dwarves exist both above and below ground, but prefer to retreat underground before dark. Moria is also infested with Orcs which co-exist with the Dwarves, but due to the dwarves weapon planning and makeshift building skills, have them kept eternally separated. Orcs prefer to travel above ground over night, but turn to stone during day. Orcs and Svartelves were once one and the same, but Orcs have turned evil from Niffleheim’s taint, and Svartelves continue to lie in wait with their elven descent.”

“The gods are an entirely different beast altogether. Jupiter the king of the gods, Mars the warlord of war, Venus the goddess of beauty, Mercury their messenger, Terra the goddess of fertility, Saturn the god of time, Uranus the sky god, and Neptune the lord of the sea – all exist within their coexistent realms, while retreating to the land of ‘Valhalla’. Their messenger to the humans and other living dwellers of Middle Earth is the Valkyrie named “Verdandi”. Verdandi is perhaps the only being in existence to live the life of a god, whilst walking and roaming amidst the humans and other creatures of Middle Earth. No one is more adept than she and no one is probably more respected and revered in the land save for the life tree of Ymir itself.”

“The entire land of Middle Earth is sustained by the Ymir life tree. It’s branches and roots spread underground worldwide and its leaves are said to reach Asgard itself. Above Ymir sits a strange Aurora.”

“The Fenriswolf is also an ancient creature to contend with – it is chained within the bowels of Niffleheim with a mystical rope of ancient lore. This weapon could be cut if Ragnarok were to get to close – then the true Ragnarok would begin. If Fenrir were ever to be cut loose, he would contend with his ancient threat –swallowing the moon of Luna whole.”
