18. The Seven Mortal Guardians

18. The Seven Mortal Guardians

A red car whizzed its way to the capital, only a few miles away from its borders creating a storm of dust on its way, the speed limit something only the supernatural could afford without getting their necks or teeth snapped off.

Inside were obviously seven members, a vampire occupying the driving seat with his insane style of driving. Only the bright moon on the horizon and the windy night were witnesses to the tragic fate of the beings inside the car with the said vampire.

"JI-HOON!" A female voice inside the car thundered, exasperation clear in her following words. "Calm the heck down and keep your eyes on the road, not on your stupid reflection!" But she was selectively ignored as the reckless vampire did the driving to his liking.

"Chill-ax, my sweet Rianna, even if I crash you will not die." Was the absurd consolation she got in return.

Rianna turned her fiery eyes towards the man all the while bracing herself on the seat so that she would not be sent flying, even with a seat belt.

When traveling with the damned Ji Hoon they had to use magic even inside a car, so that they would arrive safely without dying in the process.

Turning her head towards the back seat she found the rest of the five, and except for their darling leader, everyone else was in a similar situation as her.

"Chief, why did you give him control?" She could not help but whine at the sight of their handsome chief, who sat eyes closed, immovable as a rock.

Endowed with silky red hair that flowed to his broad shoulders and a deep set of charcoal eyes, he was the leader, chief of the seven mortal guardians, Kace Dolton, the great magus of light and darkness.

"The next mission is not something even the last one can compare to. Then none of us would have the time to enjoy or play around. So let him have his fun." Kace spoke his eyes still closed.

But then an anguished voice sounded next to him.

"Let him have his fun?! What fun?! I'm feeling sick, oh my god... I... can't.... st-op." Panicked hearing such grievance Ji Hoon immediately stopped the car braking hard causing all of them to jerk forward, especially the sick one who let out a yelp before immediately scrambling off of the car.

"Wow! Even after so many years I still can't get used to it when he becomes like this." Ji Hoon murmured shocked as he watched the spirit dry heave. He was clearly a spirit, the most different evolved being of the original humans, how come they could too, have motion sickness?!

"It can't be helped, he even refused to travel in carriages those days. Now at least he does not refuse to get in the car." Rianna shook her head in sympathy. Ji Hoon had been the one to join them the latest, so some of the weird situations they'd all faced were still not to his knowledge.

"He is a supernatural, yet so human." Then the human among them, intelligent eyes gleaming. After that he too got off, taking care of the sich spirit being.

"So now, can we change the driver?" Amidst all this discussion a timid voice sounded, a head full of short brown hair popping up. Seeing her hopeful expression Rianna couldn't help but laugh, then immediately nodding in agreement.

"Hey! You two! I'm still here you know. Conduct yourself with some dignity, revolting so openly aren't you ashamed?! And Rianna, you are the only one who would find her own man so annoying in this entire world." Pouting Ji Hoon was full of complaints expressing his dissatisfaction as his beloved disdained his awesome driving skills.

Yet he obediently moved out of the driving seat joining the rest in the back while the short-haired girl took on his original seat. Seeing this everyone sighed in relief but the vampire was still satisfied as Rianna sent a loving glance at him.

Seeing this Kace sighed. One was outside heaving the content in his stomach out, another was patting him on the back holding the emergency water bottle in hand. Another timid in everything other than battle, another sleeping his head against the door, lost to the world while the other two engaged in a stare-off filled with loved and adoration.

Just thinking of the bunch made his headache, yet they were the strongest of the supernaturals after all those old monsters.

The one plagued with motion sickness, of the species of Spirit, proficient in ice was Elijah Ainsworth. As for the timid one, she was of the giant species, petite in stature but with explosive power under her tiny frame. She was Freya Ackler.

Rianna Sunborn was the shapeshifter in them, a giant serpent shifter. As for the one helping Elijah, he was their human strategist, the one who used his brains to ultimately save their asses at the end of the day. He was Giovanni Russo.

And the vampire lord, Ji Hoon, the sexy playful one was Rianna's partner. Finally, the one who had been snoring a storm throughout the trip was their warlock, Rinn Vozenilick.

And currently, they were all on their way back to the capital on urgent orders from the monarchs regarding the bizarre atmosphere happenings at the capital.

According to what he'd been able to gather the situation seemed to be more severe than implied, so he just hoped the unreliable members of his team would just be reliable for once.

After fifteen minutes of fooling around and lagging behind, they finally started on the road once again, reaching the capital within an hour of time. And this time all the members of the mortal guardians were in one piece due to the responsible driving of Freya.

As the red car slowly entered the capital everyone within sat up straight, specially Kace who had an expression of concentration as he probed the outer world around him with his magic.

Black and white flickered, tendrils of two colors drilling through the air as they traveled all over the capital. And as time passed, Kace's expression turned more and more grave.

Seeing him like this the other members too turned solemn, understanding that the situation was of absolute seriousness.

"What is wrong?" Rinn who had now woke up asked rubbing his eyes as he felt the tension inside the car.

"Darkness and evil. In every nook and cranny, there is darkness and evil. I do not know the cause of it, but the sinful air is vastly abundant." Kace explained calling back his magic.

"Drive to the palace. Maybe the monarchs have a better idea." Kace ordered once again resting his eyes while his mind whirled thinking of the possible reasons.

Meanwhile, Giovanni calculated a million reasons for the said development and came up with three high possibilities.

One, either some kind of group of warlocks had been indulging in vile spells, two, it was the doing of the old monsters of the supernatural world and the last, what he dreaded the most, that it was the doing of the aberrations of the world.

The Six Deadly sins.

But all was yet to be uncovered.

"Waves of darkness, the hidden evil, legions of righteousness, open goodwill...

At the end who will prevail?"

In the middle of the night, closer to the hours of the damned the palace doors opened voluntarily giving entrance to seven powerful beings.

Footsteps echoing in the marbled floors the seven mortal guardians entered and walked through the palace hallways till they reached an extremely ordinary door. Compared to the other grand and stunning structures it really was rather odd but due to the inconspicuous place it was placed, it was not seen at first glance.

But now, as the seen of them stood in front of it, magical undulations flickered, the spells placed upon it scanning the new arrivals.

After confirming their status and identity a blue emitted from the door granting permission for access as it slowly creaked open.

Without a flicker of emotion, Kace stepped forward entering the door as the other six followed suit, the door promptly closing as soon as all seven stepped inside.

Inside they found themselves facing a dark corridor, the path leading them to a stone door.

Sliding it aside the seven of them meticulously entered and upon entering they all got on one knee hands placed on their chests as they bowed respectfully.

"We, the seven mortal guardians, greets the honored monarchs." Seven voices reverberated through the room and after ten breaths of time they all once again stood up, standing tall with a proud tilt to their stature.

"Good, you've all arrived. It is time we discussed important matters." The monarch of mages was the first to speak pointing the seven to take note.

Following his lead, the old man among them started speaking.

"Recently there had been multiple anonymous reports of murder and slaughter all over the capital. Yet when we send soldiers to investigate none of the shreds of evidence could be found. Not even a speck of blood. Only the bloodthirstiness and evil in the air paused as any indication of any ruthless matters that happened." After their earlier meeting, the rest had departed to their own primary kingdoms, only the two of them remaining here.

"And the rest of the monarchs seemed to have found the dame traces of incidents in their respective kingdoms. Since only mine and Lord Baldwin's are not implicated their are some doubt swirling about, so you have to be careful. Thoroughly investigate everything, till this period of trouble passes we both will be residing in the palace of Royale. And taking into consideration the difficulty of the situation another team has been deployed to assist you, you all will meet them within this week." With that, the monarch waved his hand effectively dismissing them.

Bowing slightly they departed and as soon as they were out of the ordinary door all their expressions turned sour.

"What did he mean by sending another team to assist us? Is he doubting us?" Ji Hoon grumbled discontent obvious on his face. Seeing him like this Rianna patted his back attempting to calm him, but she too had the same thoughts.

"For now I'm not sure. The situation had affected a far vast cost that I originally imagined. Maybe we will really need it." Giovanni intervened offering a logical answer.

"Let's wait and see. If the team is not up to it, we'll just leave them behind. Besides if they are truly weak and pose a hindrance to us then even the monarchs would not be able to do anything." Kace ordered before they all departed from the castle to their respective homes.

A good rest was needed after a tiresome completion of a mission.

While inside the stone room the human monarch asked the other in apprehension.

"Is this really a good idea. You know what they think of the seven of them."

But the magus monarch just shook his head, a slight smile on his face.

"There will be clashed, but don't worry I have a feeling the outcome would be most interesting."

How true the words would be? Only the future would tell.
