Tranquility

With a calm and steady steps, Jake slowly walked out of the alley, his mind clear and focused.

Let’s see how long it takes them till they discover the bodies this time, Jake grinned.

He walked out of the alley and into the neon-lit street, the cool night air pressed against his skin.

Jake took a deep breath.

The crisp air was reinvigorating.

Walking along the sidewalk, he looked up at the towering buildings looming over him, their windows reflecting the neon lights of the city.

Despite the danger and chaos he had found himself in just moments ago, Jake couldn't help but be captivated by the beauty of the city at night. The metropolis was like a living organism with its own pulse and rhythm.

After a few blocks, Jake came across a convenience store. He paused for a moment to take a look at it.

The store was brightly lit, the smell of fresh coffee and pastries wafted out onto the street.

Soup it is.

Deciding on his dinner plans, Jake walked inside the small shop.

Except for the tired-looking cashier behind the counter, the store was completely empty.

Making his way to the back, he searched through the aisles, picking up a few items here and there.

Jake quickly paid and stepped back out into the cool night.

The sound of the city surrounded him once again. The distant roar of traffic, the chatter of the increasing number of pedestrians, that had suddenly appeared while he was inside the store, the hum of life in the metropolis.

Jake was different from the other residents of that lived in the city.

Jake did not feel the remorse or guilt that he should be feeling at the moment. It was not that he was just evil, he had just become numb to it over time.

With these thoughts in mind, Jake continued his way home.

“Hello Miss Maria, good evening,” Jake greeted.

Entering the apartment complex, he approached the old woman tending to her potted plants in the communal garden with a smile.

“Good evening, dear,” the old woman replied, straightening her back. “How was your day?”

Jake shrugged nonchalantly. “Same old, same old. School was busy, but nothing I couldn’t handle.”

She nodded understandingly. “Well, you know what they say, busy hands are happy hands.”

He couldn’t help but chuckle at the woman’s old-fashioned saying. “I suppose so. How was your day?”

“Oh, you know, just tending to my little garden here,” she said, gesturing to the vibrant collection of flowers and herbs in her care. “It’s my little slice of paradise.”

Jake nodded in agreement, admiring the selection of flowers and vegetables. “It certainly is lovely, you’ve done a great job with it.”

“Thank you dear,” the old woman beamed with pride, “come again and take a few vegetables next time, they should be rip until then”

They continued to chat for a few more minute before Jake bid her farewell and continued on his way.

With lightened steps, he walked up to his apartment.

The smell of wood greeted him upon entering his home, the apartment was a rather old one, that was still mostly made out of wood. Jake really liked the stile and charm of it.

Jake put the groceries in the kitchen and since he did not have anything better to do, started cooking right away.

He started by butchering the whole chicken he bought at the store.

While the chicken bones browned in the pot, he started with chop the vegetables he needed, a few carrots, half a celery, two onions and a bit of garlic.

Jake put them together with the chicken meat into the pot with the bones, and after a few minutes he filled the pot up with liquid, using a mix of white wine and water.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Finally, Jake finished by adding the spices and began to wait.

Around half an hour later, the pleasant aroma of hot chicken soup waved through the air, filling the apartment with warmth.

Jake sat down in front of the tv. In one hand he had a bowl of soup and in the other a warm cup of green tee, it truly was a pristine way to end the day.

He turned on the tv and scrolled through the programs. Not finding anything particularly interesting, Jake switched to a streaming service to watch the latest hit show.

As the show started, he leaned back into the couch, it really couldn’t really get much better than this.

Unfortunately for Jake, he was a little too relaxed and fell asleep in front of the tv.

‘…’

RRRing RRRing RRRing….

…w..what’s this noise ?…

…FUCK—I overslept !

Jake jumped up from the couch in shock.

Without a moment of hesitation, he speedran his morning routine and was out and on the street in less than ten minutes.

Since there was no one around to watch him, Jake decided to take the risk and ran towards the train station.

If someone was there to watch him, they would have seen how Jake ran multiple times faster than even the world top runners, and yet he didn’t even break a sweat.

A four minutes later, Jake was at the station, just in time for to catch the next train.

He could have run all the way to his school and maybe would have been even faster than the train, but that would have caused way too much unwanted attention, especially after his connection with the disappeared of the school bullies was already more than suspicious.

Jake didn’t really think about it all that much yesterday, but the police were bound to investigate his involvement with the case or at be least suspicious of his involvement, if they weren’t complete idiots.

Not even mentioning the few strangers that saw them together, Olivia must have clearly seen how he walked into the ally together with the group.

So Jake really couldn’t afford to stand out even more than he did by casually crushing sprinting world records on his way to school.

Jake arrived at his school just in time to hear the bell ringing for the first lesson, he wasn’t too late yet.

It was nothing that couldn’t be explained by him just missing his train and if he had a bit of luck, the teacher wouldn’t even write it down.

Upon entering the classroom, Jake immediately spotted the four conspicuously empty seats.

The class hadn’t yet started, it seemed he had even more luck than he thought, and Mr. Laurel was late as well.

Walking through the classroom, Jake eventually sat down next to Olivia.

“Hi” Olivia smiled.

“Uhh.. Hi”

At that moment, Mr. Laurel suddenly entered the class.

“I’m sorry for the delay… I missed my train” He wheezed in between words, trying to catch his breath.

“Ahem… does someone know why Brad and his friends are missing?”

Joke had felt like Olivia suddenly gave him a strange look from the side, as if she expected him to say something.

‘Is something wrong? Jake whispered.

‘No..nothing…’ Olivia turned back to look at the front.

Seeing how she didn’t acknowledge the matter, Jake couldn’t really say anything.

“…”

“Nobody? Okay, then let us start with today’s lesson…” Mr.Laurel started the lesson.

Without Bard and his annoying group around, Jake’s school life suddenly became a lot more enjoyable.

During the breaks he still snug up to the roof, but this time not to escape from them but as a means to relax. It truly was a blessing, that for some reason, nobody else had the idea to go up there.

During class, Jake talked a bit more to Olivia and slowly his awkwardness washed away.

Their conversations weren’t really anything deep, they mainly talked about mundane things like popular shows and other popular things. Jake came to like her bubbly personality, more than he thought he would.

Jake even had some small exchanges with the other students that sat near him, mainly when they participated in his and Olivia’s discussions. All in all, his school life began to shape up into something a lot nicer than what he had experienced after the first two days.

The last lesson of the day was finally over.

Today was an especially nice day, sunny but not too warm. Thinking it would be an excellent day to visit a caffè, Jake turned to Olivia, seeing if she would like to go with him.

“I’m sorry, I don’t have any time today, but i would really like to go another time okay?”

“No problem,” Jake didn’t really think about here response, and instead quickly made his way to his favourite coffee shop.

The caffè was run by an old man and never had a lot of visitors. Most people who were going there had been doing so for a long time, just like Jake.

He ordered a black coffee, as well as something to eat and sat near the window.

Jake opened his book and began to read.

Although he read most of his stuff online, for special occasions like this, Jake still preferred the real deal. While more expensive, it was still quite possible to find books made out of synthetic paper, only the ones that were made out of real paper would cost you a pretty penny

After some time he was interrupted by the old man who brought him his order. After that, he turned back to his book.

Some time later he was interrupted again, this time his phone vibrated.

Sigh…. can’t I just have a few hours of calm.

He pulled out his phone, it was a text message.

For a short moment, a dark shadow appeared on Jake’s face, before he put the phone way and continued reading his book.

***

The day passed without anything more happening, and Jake once gain sat in one of his classes when his phone began to vibrate once again. Seeing how the teacher was writing something on the electronic blackboard, Jake sneakily pulled out his phone, trying to read the massage.

Let’s meet up tomorrow,

I found a nice place.

I will send you the address

later.

——————————-

Jake already knew that what he did to these bullies was a bit excessive. So he would have gotten a notice sooner or later, he wasn’t really surprised by it.

But nevertheless, Jake was still astonished by how fast the massage came. Not even the police found anything yet, or if they did, they were really good at covering it up, since not even a sliver of information trickled down to the press. If it did, they would have gone wild.

Despite Jake’s relatively nonchalant attitude, this was a pretty big deal. Yes, there were a few murders here and there every day, but not like this.

He had killed four teenagers in a pretty nice district of the city, something that would spark a small scandal if the press knew of it.

“… Can you tell us what’s so interesting, you had to pull out your phone during class, Jake?”

A some point, while he was occupied with the massage, the teacher had turned around and saw him staring at his phone.

“…nothing really…”

“Then would you mind putting that dammed thing away?”

“no” Jake answered, quickly putting his phone into his pocket.

A few moments later it vibrate again, this time Jake ignored the massage.

He already had a pretty good guess where the not so mysterious stranger wanted to meet with him.
