Fire and Water

Grains of sand are thrown into the air as Aubrey sprints to the grass field. King chases after her. Lahar stays close to the water as Doc primes her slingshot. "It was a real stupid idea, picking a fight with me," Aubrey says, inches from the grass. She sees a blur coming toward her from the corner of her eye. In a split second, she avoids King's foot aimed at her face.

"Can't say I'm not enjoying this. You don't see people like you so often. Now let's find out whose magic is stronger. Yours?" Aubrey rolls onto the grass. The flames orbiting her right hand form a symbol Lahar has never seen before. Aubrey slams her hand onto the grass. Flames spread through the grass. Aubrey looks up and stares into Lahar's silver eyes. Gold takes over Aubrey's eyes as she says, "Or mine!"

With those words, fire rises from the symbol, burning the grass around them. King jumps out of the way and onto the sand. Aubrey stands in the middle of the flames, her hand still on the ground. Lahar fires a shot, hoping to extinguish the flames. Instead it is met by a stream of fire rising from the flames.

Aubrey's hand slowly rises. She grabs what looks like the silver handle to a blade. Fire rushes to the sword, and each flame constructs more of the sword. What is left is a patch burned to ash as the last flame forms the tip of the double-edged orange blade.

Aubrey grips the handle with both hands and braces herself. Lahar fires two more shots at her, aiming for her hands and legs. With two swings of the sword, Aubrey turns the blast to steam clouds. The force pushes her back slightly. "Seems that water gun has some kick."

A cannonball soars toward Aubrey. Two symbols glow on her back. Sprouting from the symbols, a thick layer of candle wax stops the cannonball from hitting her. The cannonball falls to the ground as the candle wax takes the shape of wings.

Lahar chants a spell as Doc fires two gray goo balls from her slingshot. The goo hardens in midair and takes the shape of cannonballs. They both are blocked by wax wings. With Aubrey's attention on Doc, King dives under the wings and goes for a right hook.

Aubrey's reflexes are just as fast as his, and she blocks the blow with her blade. King's fist catches on fire once it touches the blade. He slams his left fist onto to the blade, hoping to crack it. Aubrey pushes back, but the blade is intact.

Lahar focuses on her spell, trusting King and Doc to keep Aubrey busy. Doc fires a red ball at King. It hits his back and turns to dust. His flame burns bright as the dust soaks into his sand skin. His moves are quicker, sharper even. Aubrey struggles to avoid or block his advances.

Her eyes examine his movements, waiting for an opening. Doc fires more cannonballs at Aubrey, keeping her wax wings occupied. Aubrey jumps back to create space between them. With one flap of her wings, candlesticks fly out, each one igniting in the air, engulfing them in flames.

Their target isn't King but those behind him. King runs back and catches each one before it can hit anyone. The flames don't bother him, but they do what they were intended to do. An opening is created, and Aubrey jumps at the opportunity. The orange blade slices King's arms and lower body. Flames sprout from the blade, turning the cut areas into glass. King falls to the ground, immobilized, leaving just Doc and Lahar.

Lahar's eyes shine silver as she says, "Doc, it's ready."
