The year is 2100, in other words it has been 50 years since we ran out of the substance known as Oil, I have heard it was what allowed us to make it to where we are, technologically, but I can't understand that. From my point of view, it is what kept us stagnant and reliant on it, like a drug. But that is not important anymore, what is important is that it is gone, and has been for a long time. At first the world panicked, started fighting wars for the substance, its absence didn't effect the general citizen as much, by then they had electric cars and nuclear power plants. The problem was that heavier duty vehicles couldn't run without the stuff. Eventually, the fields started outputting less and less food, due to there not being enough oil for the farm machines to run. That problem was solved rather quickly though. A Scientist by the name of Micheal Treckor made an engine that could output 5 times the horse power of the previous engines, from electricity. This allowed large farm machinery to be made with huge batteries to work the fields. While this was good enough to keep Americans fed, the Chinese and Africans didn't have the necessary economical funds to acquire these, so their populations dropped drastically. Now the world population is at 5 billion. Japan and Europe were luckier, they had the necessary economic funds and technology to make use of the new engine.
Still, the world fought over the last drops of oil, because their war machines would not be capable of functioning at the same level with the new engine. This part makes sense to me, I mean who would allow an enemy to charge their Tank using your power grid? Not to mention there was yet to be an engine that was powerful enough to power a plane. At least not one that would only last a minute or two. This took longer to solve, but eventually it was. This was the invention of the century, no of the millennium, the American scientist Lesley Aiken discovered an element, while trying to make a geo power plant by digging into the crust. Her digging device worked too well and made almost made it to the mantel before they were finally able to stop it, and bring it back. While they were studying the device to see what happened they saw a strange mineral on the drill, it was unlike anything they had seen before. But before they could study it, it started to decompose as though it was touched by an acid. It took ten years before they were finally able to get a sample of 100g to actually study.
What they found though was a material that absorbs light at a 100% as in, any light that hits it ceases to exist. Once they reported this to the government they began a massive research project to discover how this property could be used. They where hoping for a way to make a solar panel with it, as the solar panels at the time where 30% efficient, but decayed at a rate that made it a 0 net gain in electricity. After about 5 years of study, the scientist Astra Tighe was able to make an alloy from the substance, then named Fallax Tenebras. The alloy used a ratio of 4:9, in other words 4g of Fallax, and 9g of Uranium. That's right, the alloy was made with uranium. At the time they tried it just to see what would happen, they didn't expect that the Fallax would make it so that the uranium would become non-radioactive, and stable, while at the same time allowing the Fallax to become able to keep its form, even when exposed to light. At the same time this allow produced electricity at a ridiculous rate, 1 kg of the stuff in the right shape could power 1000 homes forever. Because no matter how much light it absorbed, it was turned into electricity, without wearing down the substance. This meant that planes could now be flown during the day as long as they had a layer of the alloy on their wings. And vehicles did not have to be plugged in to charge as long as they had some of the stuff on them. This however was an impossible dream. Once they started trying to gather the Fallax, they became aware of how rare it actually was, at least while still in the crust. A Mathematician calculated how much there would be in the entire earth, if one did not go into the mantle, and the answer was 10000 kg. In other words only enough to make 32500 kg, or 32.5 metric tons. While this may sound like a lot, it was an incredibly small amount considering that the entire earth, if it could be weighed, is 6.585x10^1021 metric tons.
Stolen novel; please report.
Still the United States, announced this to the world and proposed a plan, every country would gather as much of the substance as they could, and then they would pool their resource to create a series of satellites that would be in geosynchronous orbit above the earth and send down power to every country. There was some moaning and groaning from several countries but considering that only the United States knew how to make the alloy they gave in and allowed the United States to create and launch the satellites with their help. Now there is no need for any power plants or oil. All vehicles receive energy from the satellites, and it provides enough power to power the entire world.
Well that's enough for the history lesson. The world's energy problem was solved 15 years ago when I was born. Not that I actually have parents, you see during the energy problems the world was facing there were several groups of people who weren't happy with how things were going, and they decided to take matter into their own hands. I am a result of one of those groups experiments. They figured they would mess with the human genes to create a “superhuman” and while it sounds nice and all, what they were planning to do with the result no one will know. But a lot of the experiments failed, or rather, I am the only one that didn't die in the process. Soon after I was born the Japanese government found out about the base I was at, and it was raided, and I who was only a month or 2 old at the most, was discovered. Unfortunately most of the data from the research base was destroyed before the government could get their hands on it. All they know is what I told you. So they decided that even if I was a superhuman they would put me up for adoption.
