I remember the last day of peace like it was yesterday. I remember it was May 3, 2025, and I awoke at 6:30 AM. I remember the feel of silk upon my skin as I pushed the sheet and blanket off of me. The bone-chilling cold of the wooden floors as I rose from the bed. I remember how the steaming water felt on my skin as I took a shower and the soft cloud-like feeling of my towel as I dried myself off. I even remember the clothes I was wearing, my blue jean that hugged the gentle curves of my body, the dark blue shirt that felt like a second skin. I remember how I looked in the mirror, with skin touched by the sun, hair darker than a raven's feathers and a face that would make most men look twice if only I would smile.
I was raised by my father after my mother died in childbirth. I have been told by many that I look a lot like her, some said we could have passed as twins. My father was a good man, he raised me to be loving and caring and even when the doctors told him that I would never feel emotions the way everyone else does. So many doctors told my father that I would stay an emotionless robot even the people in town call me a sociopath when they think I cant hear them. For many years I didn't know what they meant until I took psychology in high school and from there I started learning about it in my spare time even as my father taught me the family profession.
My family for 4 generations has been the local Morticians and Gravediggers. Ever since I was 10 I had been around the dead. Either cleaning their graves or watching my father prepare their bodies for a funeral. Once I was 16 my father allowed me to help him dig the graves though with our town being as small as it is there were very few deaths. I decided to go to college to get a degree so I could take over from my father though the main reason I decided to do it is I prefer the dead. If I am around the dead I don't have to force a smile, I don't have to laugh when everyone else laughs and I don't have to pretend to care about the people around me. With the dead, I can just work without needing any of the useless actions my father told me I should take. It took a few years of college but I passed with such great grades that there were some big towns and cities that asked for me to work for them but I felt no need to join those places where I would have to work with others and pretend that I care so after an hour of talking I managed to get away and turn them down. Afterwards, I went back to the family mortuary and until my father retired I worked with him to prepare the bodies that came to us for their funerals, and one week ago my father himself died. Many in the town asked me how I was able to cut open my dad for the procedure but honestly... I felt nothing. His body was just like all the rest I've seen and handled. The embalming process didn't feel any different, even when I dug his grave all I could feel is the dirt parting every time my shovel is pressed into the ground.
Today is the day I have to beautify his grave although I don't see the point my father always told me it is part of the job and so I do it with every grave after a few days of them being buried. I walk down the old, creaking wooden stairs to the kitchen. When my mother was alive she loved cooking so my dad had gotten it remodeled for her so unlike the rest of the house it looks brand new since neither I nor my father used it very often. I enter the kitchen just as the sun rises at 6:41 AM exactly and as I make breakfast I turn on the news to hear what the weather will be like today. After eating and confirming that it would be sunny I go outside and grab the trashcan and the sod for my father's gravesite. I just finish cleaning up his gravesite when dark clouds cover the sky and a booming voice full of Authority rings out across the world.
"Humans of Earth! I have decided to leave your fate up to a simple coin toss and because of that many changes will occur the first and most important for you is the system. This system will be your very lifeline in the days to come. So fight humans, and give me a show to remember for millennia! For if you don't you shall just become food for the creatures I have designed for this show."
