The day is bright with the sun giving off heat that would allow any animal to curl up and sleep while being enveloped in its rays however today was not meant to be such a day for wherever you go are the sounds of roaring animals, the yelling of Man and screams from the wounded quickly silenced on this day which wished for peace but received war. This was not just any war, no this, this was a war for survival where for one side to live the other must die and for hours Man was pushed and pushed till they could go no more than in the west cheers broke out and from there came men and women bloodied but with sky-high morale they plunged into battle not caring for their previous wounds. Man slowly pushes back till a stalemate was reached. Bodies bloodless with chunks torn from them scattered the field and more slowly filled up the leftover space but even though Man had gained a second wind from the win on the western front they were tired and the enemy had many fresh 'soldiers'.
It was at that moment a clear voice, that sounds like a sparkling creek in an endless desert, rings out.
"Kill the beasts. Should any human get in your way... Well, they are expendable."
The people hear the voice they are first relieved then fearful as they see a black wave charge down the hill toward the melee. With a large Undead leading the charge with her just behind limping slightly they cut deep into the southern front quickly every person paying attention lost sight of her within the throng of undead and beasts. The Undead fight the beasts with a ferocity only seen in rabid animals, in many parts of the battlefield you can see undead ripping open a wolf, boar or even bear. The few glances people get of the woman are her personally using her hands to tear apart one of the beasts then she is gone as though she was a ghost. Within the melee are people who get too close to the undead and quickly join them in their eternal fight against the living.
It doesn't take long before the southern wave is crushed with the east and north quickly following with the girl leading the undead the only humans to die are the slow, the stupid and the ambitious. By the end of it, there is a loud horn blared out that covers the whole village and into the forest before a screen appears before all who participated.
Town-wide Alert! Your town has held off multiple waves of animals part of the First Colonization Attempt! For that your town is now a System acknowledged town. Along with this honor comes certain benefits, your town will now radiate an aura that will keep stronger beasts away from your town except for when there is a monster wave, land controlled by your town now gives an x2 experience boost which will stack with any other boost you may receive, your village has gained an Adventurers Hall which allows you to post and accept quests including those from the system itself as well as gain skills, business owners can now give quests and have access to classes same as the adventurers once the Merchants Hall is built. You may now promote a resident to Mayor and another to General. Please note they can be the same but it isn't recommended.
At that moment laughter rings through the area as the woman walks to the newly "built" Adventurers guild and enters leaving her Undead to guard the door while eyeing the humans waiting with hunger.
~~~~~
I look around the room with mild curiosity as I recall the battle.
After I had ordered the Undead to march toward the town I slowly started feeling better and by the time we are there my body is all but healed with small white scars to represent where I was injured but even those slowly disappear for the most part except the one where my body had to regrow a chunk of me after one of the wolves had taken a bite of my calf. I ordered the Undead to kill the beasts and followed behind Aldo as we charged into the Monsters everything after is a blur of blood and guts then I see the new messages particularly the ones that say I leveled up to 6 in all the madness. I quickly make my way to the new building ordering my Undead to remain behind as I figure out the class changer ability.
I quickly find what looks to be a human at the counter near the back of the building but there is something off about her. First off I never forget a face and I don't recognize her secondly she seems too perfect. Eyes set at just the right spacing and level, face like you would only see on a doll and a body that is just the right combination of curves and slimness. To top it all off every inch of my body is screaming danger but I have a feeling that she is what I'm looking for. As I walk up to her she locks eyes with me and smiles as she opens her mouth to speak to me.
"Welcome to the Adventurers Hall. If you have any questions feel free to ask them now." Her words flow from her mouth the way clouds move through the sky, enchanting all who hear.
I look her over once again before responding.
"The system said that this Hall was where I could get a class. What does it take to receive a class? Also, what are you? You are too... perfect to be a human and I know you aren't from my town."
She looks at me a bit shocked then appraises me before speaking with what I can only call respect or recognition in her voice.
"A regular human who can not only see through the glamour but suppress its effects. Interesting, well since you managed to do so without even gaining a class I guess I can give you a hint. I am one of the evolutions humans can receive after reaching their limit. Now for classes that is simple, to receive a class, you must first reach level 10 then you must complete a class quest the difficulty of which increases based on the rarity of the class. I must say your leveling speed is very quick. Already reaching level 5 when most are barely level 2. You must have killed quite a few of the Elite and Mini-Boss class monsters. Maybe even 1 of the Boss class monsters."
I look at her confused then remember the Screens I have been ignoring since the battle ended.
I look at the woman again after a few seconds and nods slowly.
"Apparently I did. Are there any quests from the system?"
She smiles and points to the left wall that until that moment had nothing on it but the moment she points a bulletin board with many papers nailed to it appears. I walk over and quickly notice each quest seems to be about saving another town/city. I also notice that they have different ratings starting at F going up to SSS. I look over towards her and ask about the rating and she says every person is given a rating based on what they have managed to accomplish and that you can only complete a quest 1 rating above or below your own. Because of my actions since the system came, I was given a rating of D so I reach forward and grab a few E and D quests for towns and villages near me as well as a C ranked quest for a larger town then walk towards her before handing them over. It takes a while because for me or anyone for that matter to use the facilities you must be signed up and receive an Adventurers Card.
After leaving the Adventurers Hall I order my Undead to march towards the closest village to help them with their problem. I noticed as I leave that many of the people there are happy to see me go but I notice a few nods to me in thanks as I lock eyes with them. As we start walking down the road I don't see someone slip away from the rest and enter the forest next to me. I don't pay attention at first but as time goes by and I feel my body slowly healing I start to notice something. A few hours later I'm feeling hungry so I stop to eat while paying attention to the presence that has been following me.
"You can come out now, or am I gonna have to send my dog after you."
I look over in the direction of the presence as he slowly walks out. I look him over and notice the shadows clinging to him like a lover and even with my heightened senses, I cant tell he is there. If it wasn't for my undead having the ability to 'see' life he would be invisible to all. I notice more than anything how... average he is like he could walk into a crowd and within seconds you would lose him. His hair is dark brown almost black, his skin is tan enough to know he spends some time outside but not tan enough to suggest he sunbathes. He is about 3 inches taller than me at about 5'10" his eyes are a light brown and his body looks fight wiry almost like he spends more time worrying about flexibility than strength. Overall he is someone I usually would never notice even with my habit of observing the finer details, that is if he wasn't my cousin on my mother's side. In all the years I spent in that town besides my father he was the only one who could talk to me without feeling weirded out by my lack of observable emotions. Honestly, the only reason he doesn't fear me is that he really is crazy.
I was only 4 at the time close to my 5th birthday when he decided to show me what he likes to do in his spare time. He was only 6 at the time but when he brought me to the old shed in the woods no one ever used I could see animals in different stages of decomposition. Some had cuts and slashes while others looked like they were beaten with rocks and every last one of them had what could only be looks of fear on their faces if they even had any. At the time I was interested and let him show me around before asking me not to tell anyone, as time went by he slowly started hunting bigger and bigger animals until about a year or two ago he started on humans at that time I knew that it was wrong of him to do that and wrong of me to watch him slowly mutilate animals but I didn't care but when he started killing humans from other towns and villages I felt like this might be wrong but I didn't stop him. Like all times before I watched him slowly cut her open as she slowly became aware and even when she struggled he didn't slow or make a mistake she looked to me asking for help but I just stared back wondering what she was thinking in her head as she bled out and her organs were inspected by my cousin. After she had died I had forgotten all of my misgivings and was just as interested as he was in the difference of humans vs animal bodies and their reactions to pain so we conducted multiple experiments with me eventually joining him in dissecting the people and animals. Using the chemicals at my work we would get rid of the bodies and find a new test subject.
With his skills, I wasn't surprised he gained something to help him hide as he always knocked out the test subjects when they least expected it, usually when they were in their homes. I nod to him as he walks over and sits beside me taking out his food.
"Your parents?" He looks at me and smiles slowly while shaking his head.
"They got in the way. Plus they treated you like trash and after this shit started I decided I didn't need to keep up pretenses." He takes a bite while I nod my head in understanding.
We sit in silence eating before getting up. I look him in the eyes and ask him why he followed me.
"I don't feel like sitting in that town helping a bunch of cattle survive. Plus you seem like you'll be more fun and with the way things are going ill be able to get more types of test subjects. Just think about it! So many creatures out there just waiting to be cut open and laid bare to our eyes." His grin almost reaches his ears as he fingers the knife at his side.
I nod and allow him to follow behind me as we keep moving toward the closest village. He spends some of the time admiring the undead before getting bored and starts moving ahead of the horde. After another hour we reach the next village and see no people in the streets only monsters though I notice quite a few curtains moving as the look towards the street in fear. A few of the monsters seem to be trying to get in the houses, I don't see any undead which is unusual as I know they also have a cemetery but I will have to go to the other side of the village to see it so I decided to clear out the monsters. I lead the Undead down to the Monsters and spend the next hour or so killing them, I notice my cousin every so often appearing and killing a monster before disappearing again into the shadows. By the time we are done the bodies of monsters litter the streets and a screen appears before me.
You have completed a quest and saved a village, as a reward you have been given a temporary x10 multiplier for experience gained from killing monsters
-17,824 experience gained before the multiplier
-For saving a village 1,000,000 experience gained
-For completing a system given quest in a short period of time you have been rewarded another 1,000,000 experience.
I see so completing quests faster leads to higher rewards. I look at my cousin then suggest he go get the same quests from the Adventurers Hall that popped up from the rubble so he can level up faster. After waiting 15 minutes for him to come out we head off to the cemetery to see if I can grab more undead for my army. We quickly reach the cemetery and notice far less undead here than at mine then I see all the dead bodies around the edge of the cemetery and realize they had a gruesome fight against monsters, likely one of the elites or bosses. Almost immediately the remaining undead falls under the newly leveled Ghoul and we start towards the next village with much larger numbers compared to after the fight in my town.
