Chapter eleven: Slowing down a little

A gentle breeze wakes me up. My eyelids are still heavy but I don’t feel safe enough to daydream. Yesterday I was only checking for traps or dangerous things and found nothing like that.

The room I slept in looks like a study. The one who used the room before me was clever, there is a small bed in the corner. Everything in this house was of high quality. The chairs, tables, doors, even the stone walls seemed like they was made of expensive material. The outside looks different, even though it the same substance.

There was one thing that made me really happy. Books. Lots of books. Actually I don’t like books that much, but I know almost nothing of this world. I guess that’s what you get from free sources.

I walk to a shelf, and check the labels on the books. Finally, I’ll be able to learn common sense.

I noticed that I’m somehow able to read. The little one had memories of them, and I can recall most of them. Even though she could not read, if she heard and saw them once I know of them. It’s convenient.

My, my, I didn’t catch it before, but my memory seems really good. I can clearly remember everything I perceive once.  Even if there are things I don’t want to. Let’s just totally evade those memories.

There are many different books, named like Botanic knowledge I.-IV., Monster encyclopedia, The art of healing, and other books for deepening your wisdom. They all seem useful so I take and carry them in my left hand, but I notice a small, black book. Demon encyclopedia. I frown a little. I mean I understand the need to recognise them, but what would be your opinion of a humas encyclopedia? It feels morally wrong. Says the little girl who slaughtered and eat many.

I take it anyway. Heading to a desk, I place them in front of me as I sit down. I start reading, then realise I can just scroll through them and read them in my head. No, I don’t have that kind of concentration yet but maybe if I try it’ll develop.

I put down the last book, and under five minutes I’m finished. I don’t know what’s in them yet, but it seems this way I can read them much faster. Maybe thrice the speed?

While reading them in my head I have to concentrate hard. Opening my eyes or hearing a fly buzzing outside the window disturbs me easily.

And once again, I take a life.  Better. How are they able to get this close anyway?

At noon I’m finished with them. I had to concentrate so much I totally forgot the time. At least I gained some useful information.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

I learned about many different plants, animals and monsters. Their names, uses and worth. It seems quite useful. I can use Msetre leaves to heal light wounds, Tarth roots for medium ones.  They are not potions, but they can save a life. Not that I need them for myself.

Oh, yes, I also learned useful things. Poisons. A small seed of the Vhatilus can kill most of the humans under a few days. Magic won’t help only the antidote can save you. I can grind Ghigi leaves, put it on my hand and if I touch any liquid it’ll mix in almost unnoticeably. They are rare though.

I’ve know most of the animals except the ones that are the “peaceful or more intelligent monsters”. Like the multiple tailed foxes. They seem cute, I want to pet one.

There are a lot of unreasonable etiquettes here. Sighing I realise I forgot something that I’ll definitely need later. History. I pick some interesting looking books, but they are probably only boasting on their own country. After a few hours of reading I managed to understand some facts.

The countries are basically in peace because they are all ruled by 3 separate emperors. One governs the demi-humas country, while one humas dictates over 3 humas countries. The remaining ones are ruled by an other humas.

Even if there is “no war”, there are skirmishes to take little bits of territory for themselves. At least they are not pillaging that much.

There seems to be many languages, but the one I know, refered to as merchant language is spoken everywhere.

My head hurts now. It’s almost evening and I’ve read 4 days worth. I stand up from my chair, feeling a little dizzy, I walk towards my bed, and lay on it. I try to focus my mana to help me recover, and maintain it accidentally while I fall asleep.

When I wake up I notice that my mana feels a little bit closer to me. The once unknown power now seems like a small chunk of light inside my head. I feel it with my body. It’s strange when you feel a sense you never felt before.

As I play with it, I manage to control it a little better. I can move it around my body easily, but I can’t manifest it yet. I probably has to learn how. There was a basic magic book somewhere. Owh.. No books today for me…

My concentration became a bit better. I can recognise and rebuild, even plan and construct images in head. An artist would be jealous. I’m not sure what will this be

good for.
