Chapter Sixteen: The Little Sister

Chapter Sixteen: The Little Sister

Something slithered at the edges of her realm. She studied the real world, noticing the minute details that others could miss: the wicked gleam in the co-pilot's yellow eyes, the strange snake symbol emblazoned upon the back of his tanned hand, the way the gleam transformed into a burn when he gazed at Erza.

She didn't trust him. He reminded her of slimy, crawly things that only came out in the dark.

Keeping the bulk of the attention on the creepy man, she listened to Erza's conversation. Delight sent joyous butterflies through her heart when Erza spoke of her Curse.

My sister can finally talk about me! She thought merrily waltzing in the shadows of her mind. She'd missed their play dates as children. She rubbed tears from her right blue eye. The left green eye gazed into reality, watching over her sister and her friends. Erza had never mastered the usage of their joined eyes and body, but she had. She could watch and take over their body if Erza became endangered. The left side of their body was hers, while the right belonged to Erza. They'd drawn that line long ago, and she still respected it. So long as she used the left side of their body as a shield, nothing would harm Erza.

Jo's comment about a name pierced her--she'd forgotten her own name.

She thought hard about her past. Four-hundred years was a long time to remember a single word. A name was such a little thing, but important, nonetheless. How could she have forgotten the name their parents had given her? What had their siblings called her? Something with an...'R'...

Rachel?

No, too long.

Reese?

No, the vowel felt wrong.

What was it? R...ain? Rain?

No, but close.

Rin...

That was it! Rin! She was Rin! She danced around in the darkness; elation bubbling through her. She did have a name!

A shuddering hiss popped her joyful bubble. She focused her green eye upon the real world again and saw the co-pilot slip a silver cell phone into his pocket. A satisfied look crossed his face as he gazed at the now-sleeping Erza. Rin's warning bells boomed in the darkness. This man was dangerous to them all.

She gently pulled Erza into their mind and took her sister's place in their body. Sleep sister, hopefully this is nothing, and I'm just being paranoid. But if not, you will be safer in my world.
