Chapter 17 -- Lonely & Lost

The following morning, the city was buzzing with the shocking news of Sarah's death. Headlines screamed from newsstands, TV anchors discussed the grim details, and social media was ablaze with speculation.

Sarah had been found in her apartment, brutally stabbed. The killer had left behind no discernible evidence, no fingerprints, no clear motive. The police were grasping at straws, their only lead being grainy CCTV footage from a neighboring building.

The footage showed a feminine figure leaving Sarah’s apartment late that night. The figure was cloaked in shadows, their face obscured, and their movements deliberate. It wasn’t enough to identify the killer, but it was enough to deepen the mystery.

The authorities began piecing together Sarah’s recent interactions, uncovering her strained relationships with Alex and Maya. The love triangle that had once been private was now laid bare under the public spotlight, thrust into the center of a high-profile murder investigation.

---

By mid-morning, detectives arrived at Maya’s apartment. The knock on the door echoed through the empty hallway, but there was no response.

“Try again,” one officer said, his tone sharp.

Another knock. Still no answer.

The lead detective signaled to his team. “Let’s go in.”

Inside, the apartment was eerily silent, but it didn’t take long for them to notice something was off. Drawers had been pulled out, papers scattered across the floor, and the lingering sense of invasion hung heavy in the air.

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

“Looks like a break-in,” one officer muttered, snapping photos of the disarray.

“Or a cover-up,” another countered, picking up a shattered photo frame.

Maya was nowhere to be found. Her bed was unmade, her phone charger still plugged into the wall, and her laptop was gone. It seemed as though she had vanished into thin air.

---

The trail led the police to Alex’s apartment next. They approached cautiously, already suspecting what they might find.

“Alex Wyatt, are you home?” the lead detective called out, knocking firmly on the door.

When there was no response, they forced entry.

Alex’s apartment mirrored Maya’s. It, too, had been ransacked. Broken glass littered the floor, the furniture was overturned, and personal belongings were missing.

“This is more than a coincidence,” the detective murmured, surveying the chaos. “First Sarah, now Maya and Alex. What the hell is going on?”

---

By the afternoon, the news had spread like wildfire.

“BREAKING NEWS: MURDER AND DISAPPEARANCE SHAKE THE CITY,” blared the headlines.

Television segments looped the grainy CCTV footage, speculating about the shadowy figure and their connection to Sarah’s murder. Anchor after anchor dissected the story, each presenting their theories.

"Just hours after Sarah’s tragic death, her lover Alex has vanished without a trace, followed by Maya Pringh. Both apartments show signs of forced entry, but no one heard or saw anything unusual that night," one reporter declared.

Neighbors were interviewed, but their testimonies only deepened the mystery.

“I didn’t hear a thing,” Maya’s elderly neighbor insisted. “I went to bed early. Didn’t see or hear anyone come in or out.”

Alex’s neighbor said the same. “It was a quiet night. Nothing strange at all.”

Yet, the evidence painted a different picture. Two apartments burglarized, two people missing, and one woman dead. The connections were undeniable, but the answers remained elusive.

---

Speculation ran rampant online.

“Was Maya the killer? Did she flee to escape justice?” one user asked.

“Or maybe someone else entirely is behind this, and Alex and Maya are victims too,” another replied.

Theories spiraled, each more sensational than the last.

---

Back at the police station, the lead detective stared at the evidence board. Sarah’s photo was pinned at the center, with strings connecting her to Alex and Maya. Around them were photos of their ransacked apartments and a screenshot of the mysterious CCTV footage.

“Nothing makes sense,” he muttered, rubbing his temples.

“Except that someone wanted to silence them all,” his partner replied grimly.

The clock ticked, the investigation stalled, and the city held its breath. In one night, a murder and two disappearances had transformed a tangled love triangle into a chilling enigma.

What happened to Maya and Alex?

And who had killed Sarah?

For now, the shadows held their secrets tight.

Stay tuned for more...
