V.1 Chapter 1: Back to Reality

“Please Gille don’t do this, there must be some other way! Take me! Take me instead "cried an old man.

Scrambling on his knees he desperately reached for Gilles' left leg, hugging it like a frightened child.

“Heh, sorry gramps” Gille laughed dropping his hat over his grim expression. He raised his right leg slightly above his waist, ready to deliver a blow.

”I’m holding all the chips now, partner,” said Gille as he let go of the girl. “That deal is already -” leaning backwards he dropped his leg down hard and fast into Alberts chin. “OFF THE TABLE!”

POW!

With one swift kick Gille sent the old man tumbling across the sandy plane.

On either side of Gille, two gigantic men at least 8 ft. tall came to his side holding their sides as their laughs shook the ground around them.

“Darius needs a new slave girl anyway!” Grumbled Harry.

“Yeah, di...di..didn’t one of em just commit suicide" chuckled Larry

"Come" yelled Gille as he ruthlessly dragged the girl by her hair. As she was dragged out of the square the old man crawled behind, digging his hands into the sand screaming for forgiveness.

“Please just give me a little more time, I'll do anything!” He begged. A crowd of silent bystanders gathered around the scene. Holding one hand over their mouths, gasps of disbelief were heard as the abduction of the 9 year old girl proceeded in broad daylight.

Gille continued dragging the girl into the outskirts of town, where only rocks, dust and sand lie ahead. He thrust the girl down onto the sandy ground next to his hovercycle.

“Zrilllaa!” the old man cried in the distance reaching out his hand to his grandchild. Tears began to flow behind the lenses of his sandy glasses now lined with dirt.

“Grandapapa…” She sniffled “I don't wanna go...!” She sobbed back to him.

Completely covered in dirt and sand she helplessly tried to wipe her tears with her dirt covered hands. Looking up at Gille with an expression only a monster could ignore, she rubbed her head against the side of his leg soaking it with her tears.

“Don’t look at me” Gille said looking down at her. “I gave your old man a deal and he didn't have the brain to take it!” “Now it's time to play the game my way!” He said swiftly, turning to the bystanders.

“Thank you for spectating. I hope you all enjoyed the show!” He said taking a bow towards the crowd. “We’ll be back in town in two weeks, hopefully it will be our final act.”

Gille motioned to his men as they got on their hovercycles.

“Well, until then, sayonara!” Gille said, tipping his hat.

“Hey, boss” The two men chimed.

“Huh?” Answered Gill.

“Aren't you forgetting something?” They asked.

“OH yehhh,” he said turning around, “That's right! The present!” He said, grabbing his forehead. “I was enjoying myself so much I almost forgot! Here’s a permanent reminder to everyone to get their payments on time".

Gille reared back as if he were going to spit at a woman in the distance.

“HUCCCK” he gargled with a disgruntled face. “FTHUUUU” He quickly lurched his body forward hurling two small blobs of green fluid.

In an instant the land everyone was standing on began to shake as the woman closed her eyes and covered her head in preparation for the blast.

SPLAT!

“How did it come to this?” She thought. “We were all so happy just a few minutes ago. My daughter is gone, and with that last attack I'm never going to see Zrilla again am I?” She quietly sobbed. “I'm never going to see my baby again!”

After waiting for a few seconds, she realized that she wasn’t suffering. As she withdrew her hands, she slowly opened her eyes finding a slab of the ground rising up to protect her.

She had not been hit!

Someone had protected her. As the slab of land protecting her slowly corroded she let out a sigh of relief. Looking up she saw a faint glow of white and blue robes through the frame of her watery eyes. Those colors! Had God sent someone to save her? White Blue and Gold! The colors of honor and vigor! The colors that represented the guardians of the people: The agents of S.P.A!

The S.P.A, the Shifter Protection Agency, was the agency involved with the regulating and protection of the Shifter’s population. However, they rarely came to these outlandish places filled with bandits. What was an agent doing here? And more importantly was this agent even strong enough to deal with demons that even her father couldn’t handle? As she gazed up to thank her protector she saw…. A teenager?

The teen had a mantle like shroud around him that covered him like a bed sheet. That and his wild blue hair was all Cara could see as he had his back facing her.

“Sorry I got here so late” he said turning to her smiling “I’m not usually in this area” When the agent turned around she noticed he was holding Zrilla in his arms!

“My baby!” she said squeezing Zrilla as the agent passed her to her. “What speed!” she though. Maybe she was wrong to underestimate this boy after all.

“Thank you so-”

"What do you think you’re doing you little punk!" barked Gille?

“I'm here to knock some sense into you!” the boy said.

A stroke of silence washed over the scene

“Pftt”

“PAHAHAH”

The group of thugs laughed and grabbed their sides at the thought of a teenager beating them. Zrilla even seemed doubtful as she hopelessly gazed at the boy.

"Don’t underestimate me low life’s!" said the boy. And as he spoke, he reared back the gown around him revealing a badge.

"What? Is that a real badge? What in tarnation? There’s no way a shitter like you could have become an official that’s impossible” said Gille.

“Gille!” He said punching his fists together. “You're going to pay for all the shit you put me through!”

"Hehh?" Gille asked.

“Who the hell are you?”

The agent looked down at his hands gripping a tight fist.

“All those days at the coliseum… And you don't remember this face!?” The boy answered pointing at his face.

“All those days at the colosseum? You can’t be older than 15 what kind of kid enrolls in the.”

Gille’s eyes popped open, changing his mood completely.

“You… You became an agent? You son of a bitch,” Gille said coldly

“Boss who is that!” Harry and Larry responded.

“Heh even if I had time to explain you two wouldn’t get it,” Gille said shaking his head. ”All you need to know is this is no normal teenage brat. Let's take care of this kid quickly and I can give you that surprise you guys are looking forward to.”

“Okay, boss!” The twins chimed in unison

Zrillas mother stood up holding her child tight as she watched the scene unfold.

“Just what was going on here?” she thought puzzled.

“All three of them were going to fight? It had only taken just Gille to defeat her father.

Why would they even bother using all 3 against a kid? And this kid! Does he know what he’s getting into? He’s taking on an Eagle of Darius and two 500lb golems, has he lost his mind?” she thought.

"3 on 1 ey? You guys-"(agent)

His speech was interrupted by a huge ball of acid that barely missed his face causing him to stumble. As he planted his feet to regain composure, the two men beside the acid spatter were already closing in on him just inches away now.

They came at him with a double lariat that he swiftly ducked under bringing his back close to the ground limbo style. Instantly, following their attack was another blob of acid at his feet. Stuck in a bent backwards position unable to move his legs the agent needed to space himself out.

Pushing the ground beneath him he catapulted himself into the air landing a few yards from his original position.

“What in the heck!” The agent remarked. “How can you fire rounds of acid while your cronies are engaging me”? He asked

“From a limited range I can shrink and resize the blobs so that they don’t hit them” Gille remarked, “Also those small little radio receivers in their ears help.”

"I see" said the agent, "So you harmlessly shoot acid in the background while your goons come in front for a barrage. It’s a solid tactic". The agent said nodding his head. "However this probably suggests that even though you can control the size and position of the blobs once they’re launched you can't change their direction!”

Gille's arrogant grin quickly turned into a frustrated scowl..

“Otherwise you wouldn't have them attack from this distance where you have plenty of time to manipulate the attack!” I’m guessing your distance between you and them correlates to the size of your next attack!” The agent said.

“All these precautions…The only reason you’re doing this is because you suck in a close up fight don’t you!” The agent scoffed

“Incredible” Thought Zillas mother. All that from one exchange of blows. This was no ordinary kid, no this was no ordinary agent.

"Wow kid”. Gille grunted between his teeth, "It seems you've got quite the head on your shoulders. It’s too bad we're gonna have to pop it off! By the way, good luck getting close range with me! My men aren’t very keen about people getting face time with the boss!

Forming a V with his arms he dropped and swiveled his arms signaling his men.

“Use the formation boys!” he yelled.

"A….A..gainst this snot nosed brat?” Larry scoffed.

“Yeh! He’s nothing!” Barked Harry

"Use it, you idiots! I’m not taking chances with a S.P.A Level 3. I’ve only seen one before and they ain’t no joke!” The men were more spaced out now. Gille was now even further behind and the two men aligned themselves differently. Instead of side by side they arranged themselves in a formation that looked like a V.

“It’s time I got serious as well” said the agent taking off his shoes.

“You think some shoes are going to make a difference in this fight?” Gille asked mockingly.

“Yes” said the agent digging his toes into the sand “I actually do”

“Ok,” thought the agent “With Gille much farther back his attack will be much larger this time I need to-”

Before he could grasp the situation, an array of acid blobs was on its way and he knew what would follow up.

Instead of dodging, he placed the ground in front of the acid to block it. As the blobs continued to fly, his ground shield began to corrode. The duo pounced on him again, but this time the agent sensed something different.

The first of the two men ran at him with a strong punch aimed at his stomach. He threw out his arms with a shield of rock to block the punch only to find the punch had penetrated his guard blasting him in the stomach.

Now removed of all air, the disorientated agent could barely keep balanced. As the other twin attacked, the agent dodged back avoiding the attack, but was mystified when he checked his face to find blood. He had surely dodged that fist but what if?

As he planted his feet, he took a good look at the hands of his aggressors. As the two men stood smiling he found their hands had…. Changed. The first twins arms were replaced with claws then the others hands were huge hairy and black.

“Beast archetypes” chimed the duo. Flexing and channeling their energy they began to transform. The bear twin grew brown fur all along his body and claws perforated both of his hands. Meanwhile the other twin began to become covered black in hair and his hands and arms became even larger. The agent was mystified by the two. They had become humanized versions of a gorilla and a bear.

Before he could grasp the situation the duo withdrew followed by a huge mountain sized blob from Gille. The Agent stepped back extending his hands into the air raising a giant wall of rock to block it. As he held the acid spewing off the sides of his gigantic rock shield the twins waited on the outskirts of the acid’s radius on either side of him waiting for him to make a move. After only a few seconds the acid began poking through the seams in the rock formation, slowly eroding it. Encircled on all sides the agent found himself in a desperate situation. Knowing that getting hit by the acid would be his end, he launched himself backwards and protected himself with the rocks receiving a full on attack from the duo.

The gorilla man smashed his hands through the agent’s rocklike shield sending him flying. The other brother raced around the flying agent digging his claws into the agent’s side and pinning him on the ground.

Slamming his hand onto the ground the agent created a mist of sand that he disappeared into as the bear twin withdrew. Now having received a heavy blow, he was barely in the game. Blood was pouring out of his side endlessly as he ached in pain. Another combo like that would be fatal. Taking off his pants he made a makeshift patch to cover his wound. Closing his eyes he slowly began to think about the situation carefully. How? Just how could he defeat 3 opponents so well coordinated?

He could easily defeat the two men in hand to hand combat, but it was too difficult to do while dodging Gille attacks. Although powerful, the gorilla’s attacks were slow and predictable and the bear type could easily be guarded against. He had to separate the trio but how?

“Should I go into the sand?” One of the twins asked Gille through the headset. “I can’t see him but I can still smell him!”

“NO! You idiot!” Gille yelled into the headset. “He's way above your level! Without my acid blobs to back you up you’ll be toast!” “Wait out the sandy mist, we’re the one with the advantage here! He’ll have to come out at some point.”

In a second it all clicked. As smart as Gille was, his counterparts on the other hand were lost. Removing the mist of sand he revealed himself to his opponents.

“See! So predictable!” Gille said, chuckling to himself. “As soon as you hear me spit get on him!” He declared.

As Gille prepared another blob by leaning back the two men readied their assault.

“Huuuuuqqqqq” began Gille. In the brief moment before the array of acid was sprayed at him, the agent spun his hands shifting the landscape Gille was standing on as he casted his spittle.

“FTTUU!”

With his aim now redirected the acids blobs went drifting in a different direction! Without the blobs to dodge, he was able to easily outmaneuver the duo! To the first he ducked under his punch seemingly leaving himself open for the others claw attack. Right as the bear came into range, he created a rock shield on his left hand to block the attack. As the bear clawed him, his hands got caught in the depths of the shield.

“What the heck!?” The bear twin said.

“And this one!” Shouted the agent his huge hand of gravel now casting a shadow over the

twin. “I call hard rock!” His fist crashed into the twins head landing a devastating blow to the bear’s temple.

“Regroup” yelled Gill.

As for the second twin he saw falling back to regroup into formation, he put a rock wall behind his exit path.

“Don't run backwards turn around you idi-”

Boom!

It was too late.

The second goon crashed into the wall, as the agent quickly followed up with another wall.

“Gram Cracker” The agent shouted, sandwiching the twin between the two rock walls.

As Gille recovered to shoot his barrage of acid, the agent swiftly closed in on him.

The agent now with no goons to stop him pushed both fists to the ground. He then made an arch around himself and surrounded Gille with walls creating a dome prison of muddled ground “Ha-ha now your mine!” The agent said triumphantly, leaping into the air.

He travelled through the air until he was directly above the prison he had just created. “KOTO” The agent chanted as he fell through the air. “STOMP!” he yelled as he compressed the prison into the ground with his feet.

“AHHHHHHH!” cried Gille as the sand prison collapsed. The sounds of his scream were quickly muffled as the mounds of sand buried him beneath the ground.

The agent dusted off his blood stained robe and began to walk back to the crowd of bystanders.

They were speechless.

This kid had single handedly destroyed one of the 4 Eagles that answered directly to Darius.

“Papa '', Zrillas mother began, “You worked for the S.P.A all those years right? Are they all this strong?”

“No” he replied, “Many of those clowns are cowards! Terrified of Darius and never dare to walk into an area like this one! Let alone take on one of his Eagles!” “This child is something different, the only people I’ve seen with that kind of power were at the top of the administration!”

The agent dusted off his shoulders and made his way to pick up his mantle he had dropped earlier. Using the mantle to pressure his wound he wrapped it around his side to stop the bleed.

“As I was saying in the beginning, 3 on 1 ey? You guys get one more and you’ll have had a chance. Although together you were strong individually you’re nothing special.”

“I don’t know what to say,” expressed the old man shockingly. “How could we have ever doubted him?” He waved his hand high in the air signaling to the agent.

RUFFLE-RUFFLE-RUFFLE!

The agent felt a tremble that caused his eyes to jump back to the scene of the collapsed dome. Bursting out from the rubble with thickened sand covering their bodies, the two twins stood tall ready to engage him.

“You will pay for this boy!” shouted the brothers in synchronization. As he turned back to the dome he heard a rumbling voice from underground.

RUMBLE-RUMBLE-RUMBLE!

“Caustic Wave!” Gille muttered ominously. The dome burst open as a huge wave of acid erupted rushing toward the agent.

The agent easily dodged out of the way landing a few feet away from the wave. With the giants too far away to combo him he had plenty of time to counter attack.

As the agent began his attack he heard cries for help shouting out from behind him

“AHHHHHHH” The townspeople cried.

“Of course”, thought the agent, the acid wasn’t aimed at him. It was directed at the townspeople gathered nearby. He turned to the crowd and put up a rock wall to slow the acid.

“OK” he said thinking out loud, “but that’s not going to be enough to stop it”.

As the acid ate its way through the wall, he focused his energy and performed a strange arm movement, hugging the air with his arms. He then dipped his hands into the ground and shot his hands toward the townspeople. He used all of his strength and created a moat around the bystanders that sealed the acid in its place.

“It’s not over yet!” Yelled Gille from across the battleground.

The giants made a weird change in direction. Though they originally were closing in on the agent they both took ninety degree turns in either direction.

“qqehhhheeeewwwww”, Gille began sucking in the air around him causing heavy turbulence in the air surrounding the battle.

“Oh man” Larry said fearfully gazing at Harry, “Da...da..don’t wanna get caught in this one”.

Stuck in a position where he was unable to move without risking the crowd’s safety, the agent took 20 steps forward and began to build a great rock wall.

The wall was shaped like an oval surrounding and protecting the crowd from all sides of possible attack. He began to build layer upon layer of walling bracing for Gilles next attack when suddenly the wind stopped blowing.

“Say goodnight kid” Gille said as he took off his hat revealing his hideous face filled with holes and abrasions.

“LAST ONE IN THE CHAMBER!” Gille yelled. “DARK VITRIOL”

In an instant, a burst of green gas burst out of Gilles mouth proliferating into a huge cone. From the turbulence of the wind alone all the sand and dust in the area kicked up and raced around in a flurry causing a mini sandstorm.

The townspeople struggled to keep from getting blown away on the tiny slab of land the agent had created for them. As the dark gas slammed into his rock walls he defended them through the storm the best he could.

As the vitriol ate away at each layer of his wall he took a step back and created another layer in front of him. He continued to take one step back and implement a new layer as his wall lost layer after layer to the acid. Finally he ran out of space with his back to the moat and had only one layer left. Using the last of his strength he put one last layer up directly behind him and braced himself for impact. As his last layer fell the agent took a direct shot from the vitriolic attack getting slammed against the wall.

As the agent was hit the area was covered in a mist of dust and sand.

“Hehe, looks like I overdid it boys' ' Gille grumbled,” “After the sand clears gather what’s left of the townspeople, there’s no way he survived that one” He ordered.

“...ughh..I wouldn’t be so sure” said an exacerbated voice from inside the dust cloud.

“There’s no way” Gille grumbled as he put his hat back on.

As the dust cleared he could see the agent was still standing!? His tattered clothes shuffled in the wind as he leaned onto his intact wall!?

“THERE’S NO WAY!” Gille screamed out in disbelief.

“I told you low life’s before”, the agent said coughing “you never stood a chance.” Losing his strength he fell forward into the sandy ground.

“Boys”, Gille said furiously, `”Beat him until he comes to his senses, or beat him senseless! Whichever comes first!”

”Right Boss” the twins said in unison.

The duo collapsed on him bombarding him with a series of punches and devastating blows. The agent losing strength rolled over on the ground attempting to stand up. If he had failed to weaken them earlier they'd of had enough energy to kill him with their transformations.

“Still standing are you boy? Laughed Gille.

“How?” asked the agent, “how did u survive that attack?”

“I corroded the ground below me then sunk into a hole deep underground” said Gille. “Did you like my acting? “AAAHHH” Gille chimed. “I always wanted to go into showbiz” Gille laughed.

“Now it’s your turn”, Gille said sternly, “How in Sheridan’s bourbon did you pull off that stunt?”

“I covered myself in rocks and sand right before your attack hit, not that that makes any difference now”. The agent said coughing up blood. His head dropped to his chest as he clung to his last bit of strength. He had been bested.

“Finish him off” said Gille. One of the men lifted the agent up above his head making a T with the agent's body and his and himself.

“This is it our infamous attack. The Backbreaker!” The duo chimed

“It is very painful for a bit….. And then you won’t feel anything ever again!” Gille said laughing.

Using the last of his energy the gorilla man made his hand big and black preparing to snap the agent’s spinal cord. “Any last words” said Gille from across the battlefield.

"You’re a coward" The agent yelled to Gille.

"What did you say??" Gille answered.

"I said you’re a coward! You talk so much trash while you’re safely 100 yards away too scared to finish me off yourself".

The onlookers were baffled. Two inches from death and this kid was still fighting “What exactly are we doing” they thought. “Someone who’s not even from this area is fighting so hard for us, willing to die for us”. The idea caused hope to burn in the eyes of the townspeople.

Gille scowled in disgust. That hope, that frail belief he saw, he would stomp it out and make a gruesome example of this kid so they would never do this sort of thing again.

"Bring him to me,” said Gille.

“Yes boss” the twins answered

“Boy, when I’m done with you no one will question us again!" said he barked. The duo picked the agent up and dragged him on the ground. The bystanders started to get anxious, here was a young boy about to be murdered before their very eyes. One of them was about to step forward when he realized the moat he was standing on allowed no movement. As the duo walked forward, the agent started smiling.

“What are ya smiling for!?" barked Gille?

"When I’m done with ya even your parents ain’t gonna recognize you!”

Suddenly the duo came to a dip in the landscape and lifted their legs higher to cross the land which now seemed covered in clay. After entering this area, it became increasingly difficult for them to walk bringing them to a crawl in sand up to their torso.

"C’mon boys, quit fooling around! Hurry up! I’m gonna enjoy this.”

"Boss, we can’t move!"

“Whatdoya mean you can’t,” as the man peered out from his would-be prison he saw the reason the agent grinned.

Anyone else would have noticed the dip in escalation and thickened mud but he couldn’t see it because what was left of his prison had blocked his bottom view of the area.

“Christ kill me now! You idiots have done it again!” He bickered “That’s quicksand!”

“That’s not all” chuckled the agent now free of the duos grasp. Gille looked up at the crowd and noticed the small amount of acid in the moat.

How? Earlier there had been a river's worth, all the bystanders should be drowning and their moat should be corroded by now. Now he realized what had happened. He looked back at the agent with disgust.

“That’s right, when I made that moat, I made a passage in the sand that would redirect the acid.”

“You bastard,” Gille spattered acridly. “When?”

“I had already created the quicksand when I started the fight. Do you remember when I took off my shoes?

“You sonofa!-”

“I have the ability to control any rocklike particle and when I focus my energy into my feet from a limited range I can pressurize them as you saw from my dome attack.

Gilles' eyes flashed back to the incredible pressure of the sand that resulted from his sand dome attack.

“Throughout this fight I was dodging you within a refined area building up pressure and dragging sand deep from underground that had retained moisture. Didn’t you find it weird to dodge the way I dodged your attacks? I never once left this area! The agent beamed.

“When I defeated those two, I didn't think they would go down so easily so I started to use the quicksand to hold them in place but when they didn’t get up I loosened my grip. Notice that when they arose they had already had thickened sand on them. I then created the passage with the moat knowing I could lead them here.”

“Well What if they had finished you off right there!” Gille remarked

“Ha I knew your prideful ego would never let me go out smiling. Even if you didn't, the sand was slowly moving in. I just needed to buy a few more seconds.”

“Damn it!” Gille groaned as he saw the acid approach his cronies “Damn it all!”

“If you want to save them, surrender.” The agent demanded

Looking the agent in the eyes, Gille knew he couldn’t win a 1 on 1 with him. He dropped his hands and sighed, surrendering to the agent. The agent kicked him into the pit trapping him there with the others.

“No you can't do this. You can't kill us!” cried Gille “Darrius won’t stand for this!” he yelled.

“Don't worry,” said the agent grinning, “I’m just holding you here till backup arrives.” He dragged the penetrating acid to a different direction away from the pit.

As He leaned back to relax he was caught by a wave of people.

“YEHHHHHH HE did it” screamed the crowd of bystanders

“S P A, S P A, S P A, S P A” They began to chant

“You’ve saved us all from Darius's vengeance.”(Mayor)

“Thank the heavens” (townsperson)

“Alright! Who’s head is harder now nitwits!”(Man)

“Yeh! Serves you right dumb dums” (Zrilla)

“Yeh! Who the heck raids a town on a Sunday Anyway?”(Townsperson)

“RIGHT?”(Everyone)

“What is your name young man,” Cara asked curiously

“Yes indeed” said the mayor earnestly, “Tell us the name of our hero!”

“Me?” The agent replied. “I am the truth! I am the justice that seeks out all Evil! I am-

"Axel" said the old man with simplicity.

“Yeah! Uhhh... how….did…. you know that?” Axel asked, scratching his head.

"Axel" said the man again this time louder as his eye began to twitch.

“Did you say…..? Axel?” The mayor said in disbelief as he cracked his knuckles.

“Soooooo Its Ax is it!” Said a man furiously

"Godamn Axe huh!"(Townsperson)

“That bugger!”(Zrilla)

“NOT AGAIN” (old man)

“I swear you are in some serious trouble this time MR!”(Zrillas mother)

This time the whole district said it in a twisted demonic way. "Axel" "Axel" they all started to chant in a cultish sort of way.

“What do you want?” he said as they all crowded around him with torches and pitchforks now. “Axel! Axel!” They screamed.

“But I saved you? I don’t understand?”

“Ok now, I’ll give you three seconds!”(Zrillas mother)

“What?”(Axel)

“Axel! Axel!”(Crowd)

“3” (Cara)

“Wait 3 seconds for what?’

“Axel! Axel!”(Crowd)

“2” She chanted as the crowd aimed their pitchforks at Axel.

“Wait a minute just calm down!”

“Axel! Axel”! (Crowd)

“1”

“AHHHHH” Axel screamed as he covered his eyes

“AXXXXXEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”Cried Ms. Johnson.

Axel anxiously jumped up in his seat standing at attention as his teacher slammed her ruler on his desk.

“AHAHAHA” the class roared as his teacher began scolding him.

She was a short woman no taller than 5 2 but made up for her small size with her booming voice. She stood on the tips of her toes looking down at Axel as he came to. He had fallen asleep in history…. Again, and he was sure to get detention this time.

“Sorry Ms. Johnson” he said apologetically.

“Apology not accepted I’ll see you in detention today Axel” She said seemingly satisfied.

“That is…unless you can tell me what the island we live on was originally called in the Ad standard time”.

“Umm was it Canada?” Axel asked.

The class bellowed in laughter once again. History was never his subject. Then again nothing was really his subject.

Ms. Johnson shook her head in shame.

“Reggie, would you like to tell us or did you think that during Axles sleep study I wouldn’t notice you fiddling with your latest craze?”

BOOOOMM!

An explosion of smoke came from Reggie’s desk covering his hair in dark soot. As the blowtorch coming out of his hand subsided he dusted off the remaining debris off of his desk.

EEERRREEERRRZUURRMM

His giant bionic arm creaked and reformed into its normal form.

“This Island as far back as record has it was originally called Okinawa. Originally before the great shift of 2030 it was a city in Japan that now, along with most of the rest of the world have perished. All that is left is us here Shifter’s the dormant sleeping power of the universe! Of course…some of us have greater sleeping power than others… but that’s another story” Reggie said shrugging his shoulders.

The class roared with laughter, Reggie was being sarcastic as always, but Axel couldn’t help but be torn when he saw his teacher laugh as well.

“Laughs and detention are the epitome of my life” he thought.

“Oh and where do you think you’re going Lance?” Ms. Johnson asked a student who had gotten out of his seat.

And there he was, the real dormant power of the universe, Lance Nazuka. He was the kind of person the girls would faint over as soon as his name was called in class. He had long and lavish green hair with hazel eyes, a rare eye color to appear in Shifters. He was tall and slender, at least 3 inches taller than Axel, and was in tip top shape despite his apparent slim look. Few had heard him speak and fewer had seen him smile, the only thing known about him other than his popularity among female students is that he was clearly the most powerful person at the school and the most intellectually gifted. It was rumored that when a band of bandits from the badlands had appeared on campus he had single-handedly sent them packing, at age 13 no less! He rarely came to class and still had flawless scores, the only reason for his presence today the fact that it was examination day and everyone was required to be in attendance.

He said nothing to Ms. Johnson and just pointed to the clock without even turning to face her, (11:59 read the clock).

“Class ends at 12 Lance there’s still one minute le” Without even a passing glance Lance continued on walking out of the class as Ms. Johnson bickered. As he exited the doorway for a second Lance gave a disapproving glance to Axel almost as if his eyes were yelling the words “Loser” at him.

There was also something else in Lance’s eyes Axel saw, something he was almost familiar with, but from that short glance he couldn’t tell what it was.

Ding-Ding! Ran the bell. And in that exact second Lance Nazuka had disappeared.

“Alright class for homework….” Ms. Johnson went on as Axel zoned out.

“Hehe nice….” Axel thought looking up at the clock “4 hours of class to go...”

He slumped his head in shame as he gathered his things and headed towards his next class.

“Don’t even think about ditching detention young man!” Ms. Johnson said as he exited the

class.

“I’ve already notified my husband he said he going make sure you are wide awake after his

class!” She added.

Axel’s head sunk lower leaning so far into his chest he could barely open his mouth. He

walked amongst the dozens of other students alone in his dark thoughts, thinking of what else the

the day had in store for him.

The dream was over. He was no longer the hero of the badlands, and was now instead, the joke of the entire school. He had once again returned to the horrors of reality where lunch break and recess were the only heroes that could hope to save him from the distress of everyday life.
