Chapter 7 : Why do Garus exist?

Chapter 7 : Why do Garus exist?

I let out a massive, lengthy sigh after having a long, nice sleep. No weird dreams came up and I didn't wake up at random times. It's just 1 full good night's sleep, but I haven't gotten a nice peaceful sleep, since I got here, so it felt really special.

'Shizaku', who surprisingly just woke up after me, stared at me. Well, that's to be expected of this weird girl.

I stand up, stretching my arms and legs. I felt really good today. My body is in great shape. I didn't feel any weakness. Usually, I would feel like staying in bed all day, because my body is giving up on me. Probably because both of us, Zei and Kaideru stayed up till 3 in the morning on the original world.

I sighed again. My mind feels... kind of empty and calm. It's not overthinking anything at all.

"I've decided!" I thought to myself.

"Yo, Shizaku. Let's go to the guild and do a quest."

As expected, She just stared at me, with a completely dead look on her face. I felt her aura saying "What a tiresome creature living from the soil, can you not bother me?" but I didn't mind until she told me so.

I looked outside the window. The cold was slithering in making me shiver. It wasn't snowing anymore, but the temperature was still freezing. I looked at the mirror. I could see myself. I look like a mess as always. My right eye being black inherited from Kaideru and my left eye being brown from Zei. It looked really weird. I'm glad it's not noticeable unless I look really closely into the mirror. My jacket that covers my jersey that isn't from this world, doesn't make me look like an adventurer at all. I've been calling it a jacket, but I guess it was just long sleeves. I couldn't really give too much attention to myself, because I had to focus to maintain this body. After all, there were 2 people controlling it, but right now it feels as though I don't have to do it. It kind of feels like me. Just me in one body without 2 people controlling it.

It wasn't the same as yesterday where I could talk with each other. It just feels like I have 1 thought process and 1 concsiousness.

...

"Helloooo~ Zeikai-san, Shizaku-san! Good morning!" A small girl from a distance waved to us while eating her food. Unlike last time, It wasn't that big of a portion of food, but it's food nonetheless.

I decided to ignore her and get some food of my own. It seems like high-quality food is important here. Food is one of the things that replenish energy. Energy is used by elements to work, without energy, your body would feel incredibly weak and unresponsive after using elements. That's about everything I know about elements though. Maybe, I should buy a book about it. The language of this world is pretty similar to Japanese. It has some English symbols as well, but I'm pretty fluent in that because Kaideru learned English to sustain his boredom before we got transported here. The spoken language was the same, though. I wonder if it changes based on race.

After getting my meal. A medium-sized meal set, It came with bread, rice, chicken and some vegetables. I sat down at the same table I came to when I was new to this world. Shizaku followed behind me.

We were eating quietly and peacefully, preparing for a quest.

"GOOD MORNING!" When suddenly the same little girl decided to ruin the moment of peace, sliding in casually beside Shizaku who sat opposite to me. It seems like she finished her meal already.

This wasn't enough to ruin my perfect mood today though.

"Mornin'," I said to her, while Shizaku continued eating.

At this point, I was almost done eating my food and so is Shizaku.

"We're gonna do a quest, Right!?" Rein said excitedly.

She was cute but pretty unreliable. I guess we can see how she pairs up though. I have only seen a small part of her magical abilities, so I can't be too quick to judge. I also said that I would test her today. I'm too forgetful.

"Mmm," I said with a nod "Me and Shizaku were just gonna go for a quest." I said casually to her.

"Ha-ha-ha! I'm gonna showcase to you my abilities today!"

I couldn't take too much of a close look at her yesterday, maybe because my vision was blurry. I feel like it has something to do with Zei and Kaideru not having synergy at that moment, but as of now, I am truly in my perfect form. I'm like 1 person. Looking closely this girl was definitely a loli, flat-chested, her hair length was to her shoulders only, she had perfectly brown hair, unlike Shizaku's hair, which had black hair, except when exposed to sunlight, which then it would appear brown. Her eyes were very dark brown, it would look black from afar, but it looks like when she's enthusiastic about something, It would shine a brighter brown. Her hair didn't have any clips and she just let it down loose. She is wearing a mage's clothing, but her staff looked like a stick picked up from the woods or something. It was straight with a little knob at the end. What a poor girl. I wish I could lend help to her by lending money, but alas I am poor as well.

She's super energetic though. I wonder if she has seen the cruelties of this world yet...

After Shizaku finished her meal. We headed towards the quest board, because the arigifins retreated, and since it was winter. The quest board started to have more quests.

Kill a serpent's fang scaring beginner adventurers from entering the forest. Requirements :

Help my daughter to control her fire element. Requirement: High aptitude in fire

Stove away the snow in front of my house. Requirement: None

Help a farmer create good soil for my farmland. Requirement: <8 or more in earth element.

Hmm, Fire element is really favorable on this world, huh?.

"This." Shizaku showed a poster to me. She said this still with a dead tone.

"Shoo away Garus threatening cattle and farm."

It then showed a picture of a mighty animal on earth that is basically the king of the jungle if only it wasn't a lone hunter. The tiger.

"This."

"This is good. Let's take it!" Reinsaid with enthusiasm.

"Do you people even know what this is? It's a tiger. A powerful animal! Why would we want to fight something like that?" I asked calmly, even knowing how idiotic this is.

Compared to the arigifins, this shouldn't be scary, but the poster also said it hunts in packs. Packs of tigers. Tigers are much more agile and faster than arigifins. Even though they don't have the brute force of arigifins. Their agility far makes up for it.

"This is a Garu."

"That doesn't change anything."

"It's a Garu."

"I just told you that doesn't change anything."

"A garu is a tiger that acts like a cat. Garus live in packs. Tigers are solo hunters. You can know it's a garu by how it looks at you as well." Shizaku said to me still with a dead tone.

"That's right, It's most likely harmless." Rein followed

"Huh?"

"A garu just stares at you." That statement kind of reminds me of Shizaku.

Oh... I see. Well, now that I know that. This quest didn't seem bad at all. There's nothing that can go wrong. Zei also had 3 cats in his home on the other world. This shouldn't be a worry. Should I really trust their words?

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

...

This might be the first time I actually didn't jinx myself.

Here I am in this barn surrounded by big tigers that are acting like cats. One is licking his paw at the corner. It should be a very cat-like and cute action, but it's literally a 250 kg tiger licking his paw. The tiger triples my body weight, actually more than that. One is laying down at the haybale. One is making sheep as its pillow...? Poor sheep. Anyways there are about 7 of them doing catlike things.

The barn was a pretty big barn. There might be only 1 barn in town and this was probably it. There were actually 2 buildings in this barn. The one with the cattle, like sheep and chickens, and the one where we are at right now which was smaller than the main one with cattle. This barn probably served as a resting place for the workers here. It had a room for laundry, a crockpot with lit fire, and on the opposite side of that is just hay. There were some animals inside a stall here though, so this got me really confused. Well, I don't really know too much about barns and how they work. Zei nor Kaideru hasn't been to one yet and has no idea how it should look. Guessing they were the farmer's favorites.

For context, Garus are creatures of fire. They don't like cold places and usually stay in forests for warmth. Winter arrived and these creatures couldn't go anywhere else. There has been a recent catastrophe where they can't go to the place they would go when it was winter, so they didn't have anywhere to stay, and as creatures of warmth. Their instinct told them to go to the nearest warm place, and that place is this barn. This was all according to Rein, by the way.

The barn owner was a middle-aged man. He had a great body for his age. and the owner of the cattle was currently getting licked by these magnificent creatures. He reached out to me, "Please find any way to remove this Garus, I'll be sure to repay you clea-" and there he goes. knocked down to the ground by these huge garus. Fun fact Tiger's tongue is like sandpaper. It must really hurt getting licked like that. What a poor creature, and by creature, of course, I'm referring to that old man

By the little information, it wasn't really too hard to formulate a plan. The problem is how we are gonna go through the plan. They might act like cats, but they're still tigers. The body of a fully grown tiger is huge and strong, Like I said earlier, it probably more than doubles or triples my body weight. It would take a lot of work to pull this off.

"Uwaaaa~ So cute!" Rein was there petting the Garu sleeping on the haybale. "Their fur is so fluffy and-" She stuffed her face into the garu's fur near its underbelly "mesmerizing" She sighed right after. The garu looked relieved from receiving that sigh. Well, that's a given. Human breath is warm after all. Wait! No! That Garu is really enjoying it. Is it because it's a human girl?

"Let me try that." I then proceeded to jump onto the hay to try the same thing as Rein, but instead of the Garu receiving my warmness, it slapped me without baring its claws.

A perverted Garu creature thing. Just because I'm not a cute little human. tsk... Can't believe they exist...

Shizaku was sitting in the corner of the barn, sitting on a chair. I can feel the dark aura around her just saying "Don't approach me or I'll burn you alive" and even that got to the Garus. You can sense the fear from them. What a scary girl. Is she in a bad mood today? I can't believe she was a happy-go-lucky just a few days ago. What the hell happened to her.

"Oi, Shizaku. Your element is needed here. Make sure to be ready."

She replied back with a stare. That's a yes, right?

"Ooo!, What about me, am I needed?! Of course you need me!" Rein asked me enthuastically while striking a pose, pointing her thumb to herself, although I still have that feeling that she's sad but hiding it. Ehh, It might just be me overthinking. Better not to think about it.

I looked at her dead in the eye and said "No."

She then looked away in gloom.

I observed a little bit more to actually execute the plan, without it backfiring on us.

After observing their movements and actions, I 'think' I know what to do. I'm just hoping what Kuree said was accurate.

This is a great opportunity to test out my electric element as well. I still haven't used it yet, and it takes more mana to use than water. It's a powerful element, but it wouldn't be good for long-term combat, since I'm testing it anyways. Why not try it now. I feel like my body can handle it as of this moment.

"Scorch" She also chanted some words I couldn't hear, with this simple. but long-lasting spell, Shizaku set out a trail of flaming arrows. She then ran ahead of us.

Of course, the warmest, and safest thing right now was this barn. You might be asking, 'Will the garus be safe in the forest, Zeikai-senpai?' The guild already thought of that and already set a temporary home for them to live in while waiting for their care shelter or something to be fixed. All we needed to do was move them.

I imagined something. The power of the thunder that I'm holding within my hands. What I saw was a great thunderbolt, piercing through the depth of the seas. This power. This feeling. It's coming out. This is the power of the gods!

"Chuuni" Some distant voice told me. Probably nothing, though.

Lightning Seize, I said on my mind while imagining a strike of thunder.

Electricity was forming near my hands. It first started as a small piece of lightning that looked like interconnected webs that's connected with each finger. It then sizzled and crackled. Right after that, it struck the ground near the garus. It made such a thundering boom sound that It echoed through the barn and the garus, just like cats, got startled and started to jump.

They then instinctively ran and followed the trail of warm arrows, that was leading to the forest.

That feeling was so... "Awesome!"I said not too loudly. The feeling of using something that didn't exist on the original world is so... undescribable. I just shot out an electric bolt, with my own hands, right? I wonder what more I could do? Maybe it's like those elements in manga and anime. It should be, right? It's another world after all.

After that short burst of excitement, I maintaned my calm composure again. I followed the plan, as it should actually go.

I ran as fast as I could. following them to make sure they got there without any nuisances.

The flaming arrows melted the snow trail, so I didn't have any troubles coursing through it.

Rein followed behind me and said "As expected. They are scared of my presence. He-he"

I managed to say "What presence are you talking about. I told you, you didn't need to follow." I then flicked my finger at her forehead.

"Ow"

After running for a while we finally reached the forest where their temporary homes would be.

Their home was set up, inside a cave. Torches are lit on the walls and there was a campfire in the middle. They had beds for each of them and a caretaker was there.

The caretaker went up to one of the garus and started petting it. It fell to the ground immediately falling asleep.

"Thank you so much for bringing them back. I didn't know they would run away like that. I cannot simply thank all of you enough."

"Don't worry about it. We did it for the payment."

The poster said that the payment would be from the caretaker herself and not the guild.

"Then, here is your payment. Thank you again so much."

The payment this time was 150000 Toris. It was higher than fending off the arigifins. I don't know how risking your life on big scary alligator creatures paid less than scaring off a few cats. Tsk, This world is truly unfair.

"Hey, hey. So how much each do we get?"

"What do you mean? Didn't you barely do anything?"

Her expression dropped.

"Just kidding. We'll split it later."

She gave me a smile, but it still seemed like a smile that shows a little sadness, even though it didn't show one bit. Why is it always like this with me? Why am I overthinking this?

Shizaku was just standing outside leaning against a rock from the cave. After expending a lot of energy from putting a trail of fire and running like that. It's to be expected to be tired.

"Good work."

She still maintained an emotionless face, but she gave me a thumbs up.

"Let's head back. I got the payment we need."

She gave me an "Mmm." with a slight nod in response.

Back at the adventurer's guild. It was freezing more inside than usual, so the guild decided to make people with fire element, light up a few torches. Shizaku has just gone back to lighting one and we split the cash. We get 50000 Toris each. That seems so large... yet it's so small. Well, this was an easy quest anyways. it's not like anything bad happened or will happen. We didn't risk our lives unlike the Arigifin quest, so I have absolutely zero complaints.

By this time, it was still afternoon, so I wanted to go shopping for a weapon. although this sword is effective. I wanted to be somewhat a magic swordsman, that uses a bow. Sounds cool, right? I can use water and electric with both sword and bow, or something similar to that.

I and Shizaku stayed behind while Rein said she had someplace to go and parted ways with us. We told her we were gonna test her this day... but I completely forgot about that. Well, that's fine. We still have tomorrow anyways.

"Hoho, You sure you wanna fight me, kid?"

"Back in my days, they called me "The Monster..." He then showed a wry smile.

Shizaku looked away as if she already knew what the old man was gonna say...

"The monster of Wits."

"Don't tell me...!"

The old man slammed his hand heavily into the table.

"50000 Toris take it or leave it!"

"10000 Toris, your business isn't blooming lately, huh? old man."

"That's way too low! 46000"

"Tsk, tsk, tsk, That won't cut it. 15000"

He gritted his teeth in surprise.

"You got guts kid, No one ever bargains with me this far. Fine. 40000 last offer."

"Old man, I've always come to bargain. 25000."

"35000 Toris, I'll go bankrupt if ya go any longer.

"How about we settle things in the middle, with 30000 Toris. Sound fair to you?" I then took out 30000 Toris out of my pockets and put it carefully at the table.

He hissed at me, but he still willingly took the money and gave me the bow.

I gave a winning sneer at him.

"Nice bargaining with you, Jii-san"

"Tch." He managed to let out. After his remark as the "Monster of wits." It must have been a big loss.

So there it was. I bought a bow, a seemingly good quality bow for 30000 Toris, from the blacksmith that me and Karisuki went to, the other day. I know it may be a bit on the expensive side, but this is going to be a long-term weapon. It will be worth the price. I hope...

I wanted to test this bow out, so I went outside the town with Shizaku. I just wanted to test my electric element, because this is the whole idea of the bow. Zei likes to use bows in RPGs and even wanted to do Japanese Archery. He also loved the element of electric, so this is the whole point of this.

I was outside with Shizaku sitting down watching me from a medium distance away. This time, I had no one pressuring me... No quest to do, and no one watching, except that weird girl over there who is probably not paying attention, so I should be fine.

I wind up my bow and aim at one of the small hills that was opposite of us. I thought "Generate Electro" and said quietly so only I can hear "Lightning Seize"

"What..." I said quietly. My vision was getting darker and my body was getting colder.

My thoughts couldn't conn—

"Are you alright?" Shizaku asked calmly before I passed out.
