A Spark Ignites: Arvanya's First Day of Vortex Academy and Tension
Arvanya's POV:
The soft rays of the morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a gentle glow over the room. I stirred in bed, feeling the comforting warmth and lingering hints of a strange dream. Fire, water, shadows...they danced through my mind, vivid yet fleeting, leaving a sense of anticipation that stirred something within me.
Before I could linger too long in thought, a familiar, chipper voice broke through.
"Aria, wake up! You've got to freshen up and get ready for class!" Esme's cheerful voice cut through the quiet, using my fake name with all the enthusiasm of a true morning person.
I sighed, reluctant to leave my cozy bed, but I knew Esme wouldn't let up. My roommate was one of those people who seemed to possess an endless supply of energy, never sluggish, always punctual.
Esme called again, louder this time. "Aria, breakfast is in twenty minutes! You don't want to miss it!"
I threw off the blanket, swinging my legs out of bed with a grin. The cool floor underfoot jolted me fully awake as I stretched, catching sight of myself in the mirror. My long, dark hair was a bit messy, and my eyes were still heavy from sleep, but I pulled my hair into a messy ponytail, already feeling the familiar thrill of the day ahead.
"Alright, alright," I muttered, striding to the bathroom.
After showering, I stood in front of the mirror, my mind buzzing with the familiar pull of my powers. Fire, water, earth, air, and nature—my five elemental dragons were always there, coiled just beneath the surface, waiting to be unleashed. But I couldn't let that happen.
I took a deep breath, focusing inward. I called on the air dragon first, blending my essence with it to mask the presence of the others. I could feel the cool breeze surrounding me, a subtle veil over the burning fire, flowing water, solid earth, and the pulse of nature within me.
With a final breath, I solidified the disguise, making my aura mimic only the gentle scent of an air dragon. It was enough to keep anyone from sensing the full range of my powers. Safe, for now.
Stepping away from the mirror, I felt the familiar weight of my hidden powers settle back into place, tucked away beneath the surface as I prepared to face another day.
When I emerged, dressed in my usual style—a loose blouse and fitted pants—Esme was already waiting at the door, effortlessly stylish, her curly hair tied back in a loose bun.
"You're not still half-asleep, are you?" she teased, raising an eyebrow. "You're taking forever!"
"Wide awake," I replied with a grin. "Just saving my energy for the best parts of the day."
Esme's eyes sparkled as she linked her arm with mine. "Let's go, then! Breakfast is calling, and you don't want to be late."
As we entered the mess hall, the scent of fresh bread and sizzling food wafted from the kitchens. The large hall was filled with students from different kingdoms, creating a lively, welcoming atmosphere. I felt a swell of pride as I took in the scene. I belonged here, even if they didn't know my true identity. And today, I would enjoy it to the fullest.
Esme eagerly grabbed a plate, piling it high with scrambled eggs, toast, and crispy bacon. "You've got to try the eggs here, Aria. They're amazing."
I nodded, picking up a lighter breakfast—some yogurt with fresh fruit, a croissant, and tea. I was too excited to eat much, but a little something before the day's classes couldn't hurt.
We found a table by the window, sunlight streaming in to warm us. I settled in as Esme launched into her usual rundown of the day.
"So here's the schedule," she said, sounding almost like a tour guide. "We've got Math and Economics first and then Physics—they're pretty straightforward, and you'll do great. After that, Air Elemental class—your specialty, so you're going to love it."
I felt my excitement flare at the mention of Air Elemental class. It was always a thrill to train my element, even in controlled settings. But I was holding out for something more.
"And then," Esme continued, her eyes sparkling, "Combat Training!"
I couldn't help it; I broke into a grin. "Now, that's what I'm talking about! Combat Training...finally." Just saying it made my pulse quicken. Combat Training was where I felt most alive, where every movement and decision mattered. My powers felt sharper, my reflexes faster, and I was free to push my limits.
Esme laughed, clearly amused by my enthusiasm. "I had a feeling you'd be excited for that one. You light up every time it's on the schedule."
I shrugged, still smiling. "It's hard not to. Something about the thrill of it...it just feels right. I get to use everything I've got, and I don't have to hold back."
As I stirred my tea, a sudden, intoxicating scent filled the air, distinct and magnetic. My breath hitched. It wasn't the food—it was something far stronger, more intense. I turned my head slightly and saw Lucian entering the mess hall.
Our gazes met, his eyes intense as he noticed me. I held his gaze, not flinching, my confidence unwavering. It was a quiet but palpable acknowledgment, like a mutual dare. My whole body felt alive with energy, almost like in Combat Training, but I wouldn't let him see any reaction beyond a steady, unbothered look.

I turned back to my breakfast, ignoring the lingering flutter of that moment, pretending to be entirely focused on Esme and the day ahead.
Esme, oblivious, kept talking, completely animated. "Anyway, Math should be fun, and the Air Elemental class is all yours, so you'll probably end up leading half the session."
I nodded, taking a sip of my tea. "I'd better keep my mind on that. And of course, Combat Training." I couldn't wait for that part—where skill and instinct took over, and I felt like myself in the purest way.
Esme perked up as she finished her food. "We've got a busy morning. Let's get going!"
I grabbed my bag and followed her though my mind kept drifting back to the way Lucian had looked at me. I shook my head, trying to shake off the feeling that he might be watching me even now.
We made their way toward the exit, the noise of the mess hall surrounding us, a sudden commotion near the door caught my attention. A Fire Elemental student had cornered an Air Elemental. The Fire Elemental raised his hand, flames flickering dangerously in his palm, and I could see the challenge in his eyes.
The Air Elemental student, clearly startled, flinched as the Fire Elemental hurled a wave of flames toward him. But before the fire could reach its target, I acted without thinking.
I raised my hand slightly, calling on the wind with ease. The air around me responded instantly, swirling into a gust that shielded the Air Elemental from the flames, redirecting the fire harmlessly to the side. The gust of wind was strong enough to push the Fire Elemental back a few steps.
"Watch your aim," I said coolly, my eyes meeting the Fire Elemental's with an unwavering gaze.
The mess hall fell silent for a brief moment, every pair of eyes on me, and the Fire Elemental. The Fire Elemental's eyes burned with anger as he looked at me, his face contorting into a scowl. "What do you think you're doing?" he snapped, taking a step toward me.
I met his glare with unwavering calm, my own power simmering just below the surface. "I think you should learn how to control your temper before it burns you," I said, my voice cool and steady, but my words cutting through the tension like a blade.
His eyes narrowed, the flames in his hand flickering higher. "You're new here, Airhead," he sneered. "You don't know anything about how things work around here. Stay out of it, or you'll regret it."
I didn't flinch. Instead, I lifted my chin, standing taller, and said with confidence, "If you think I'm afraid of you, you've got another thing coming."
Esme quickly grabbed my arm, pulling me toward the exit. "Aria, don't—let's go," she urged, her voice a little more urgent now. I could tell she didn't want me getting dragged into anything more. But as I was about to walk away, I couldn't resist one last glance at the Fire Elemental.
"Next time, I won't be so nice," I said, my voice low and clear, before following Esme out of the mess hall.
As we made our way toward the exit, the noise of the mess hall seemed to fade, but my mind was still focused on the Fire Elemental's outburst. Just as we neared the door, something caught my eye—Lucian.
He was sitting at one of the benches near the far side of the hall, his posture straight, yet there was an unmistakable tension in the way he sat. His eyes were locked on me, unblinking, his gaze intense, almost as if he could pierce straight through me.
The strange thing was, it wasn't just the way he looked at me; it was the way his hand was clenched into a tight fist on the table in front of him. His knuckles were white, the muscle in his jaw tightening as though he was forcing himself to hold back from something. The kind of restraint that only someone with incredible control—someone who had seen the darkest sides of power—could manage.
His stare felt heavy, and for a moment, I couldn't breathe. My heart fluttered in my chest, but I quickly pushed the feeling down. I couldn't afford to be distracted by him. Not now, not when I had my own battles to fight.
Esme was already ahead of me, dragging me by the arm. "Aria, come on, we're gonna be late!" she called, oblivious to the way my focus shifted for that one brief moment.
I tore my gaze away from Lucian and hurried after her, but not before I caught the faintest flicker in his eyes—something like recognition, but with an edge I couldn't quite place. My stomach fluttered again, but I forced the sensation to the back of my mind.
As Esme and I stepped outside into the crisp morning air, I couldn't shake the feeling that something had just shifted, but I wasn't sure what it meant yet. Lucian's gaze, the tension in his fist—it was all too much to process right now.
I had classes to focus on, and my thoughts were already racing ahead to the lessons I'd soon face. But somewhere in the back of my mind, Lucian's presence lingered, his silent scrutiny still echoing in the depths of my thoughts.
When we walked briskly away from the mess hall, the lively chatter of students fading behind us, Esme suddenly stopped and turned to face me, her expression serious.
"Aria, listen to me," she said in a low voice, her tone uncharacteristically stern. "Things are different here. The other elementals... they don't mess around when it comes to power. If you get into a fight with someone, especially a Fire Elemental, it can get ugly. They won't back down easily. And believe me, it won't be just words. They'll escalate it. Fast."
I could see the genuine concern in her eyes, and for a moment, I almost felt like I had crossed some invisible line I didn't even know existed.
"You have to stay out of it, alright? Keep your head down, don't get involved with them, and definitely don't pick a fight with anyone." Her voice softened a little, but there was an undeniable urgency in her words. "It's not just about winning or losing. It's about survival here. Elementals take their ranks seriously. If you anger the wrong person, they'll make sure you regret it."
I nodded, trying to absorb her words, but something inside me bristled. I wasn't the type to back down from a challenge, especially not when I knew I was capable of handling myself. But Esme wasn't wrong—this world was a lot more complicated than I had imagined, and the power struggles were far more intense than I had thought.
"I get it," I said, my voice calm but firm. "I'll be careful. I didn't mean to get involved anyway. It just... it happened so fast." I frowned slightly, thinking back to how quickly the tension had escalated. "But don't worry, I won't let anyone push me around."
Esme gave me a knowing look, her eyes softening a little. "I know you're strong, Aria. But strength isn't always about fighting. Sometimes, it's about knowing when to walk away. You don't need to prove yourself to anyone here, okay? Just stay out of their way. Trust me, it's safer that way."
I let out a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding. Esme was right, of course. This wasn't the time to let my instincts take over, especially not in a place where I still had so much to learn. I had my own power to control, and I couldn't risk revealing too much, too soon.
"I'll stay out of trouble, I promise," I said, giving her a reassuring smile. "Thanks for looking out for me."
Esme smiled back, her usual playfulness returning, though there was still a hint of concern in her eyes. "That's my job, remember? Now, come on. We've got classes to get to. And no more fights, okay?"
I chuckled, a little of the tension easing from my shoulders. "No more fights. I'll behave."
But even as I said the words, I couldn't help but feel a quiet storm stirring inside me. A part of me—an untamed part I couldn't ignore—wanted to test the limits of what I could do, to push against the boundaries this place was trying to set for me.
But for now, I would listen to Esme. I would bide my time and learn the rules of this world before I decided when to break them.
