A Moment of Recognition, A Lifetime of Change
Arvanya's POV:
After chatting with Esme and unpacking, I decided it was time to wash away the travel fatigue. I gathered my things and headed toward the restroom for a quick shower, letting the warm water relax my muscles. The warm water cascaded over me, soothing my muscles and quieting my mind.
As I stood under the spray, my thoughts drifted to the future—what would it be like here at Vortex Academy? Would I finally learn to control all my powers in the way I needed to? And what about the mysterious vision dragons that had been haunting me for weeks?
I needed answers, but I knew I had to tread carefully. My father's voice echoed in my mind: Be careful with those powers, Arvi. Don't let them consume you.
Before leaving the restroom, I focused on my breath, steadying it as I reached out with my powers. By controlling my breath and connecting with the air, I could create a layer around myself, altering my scent so it mimicked that of an air dragon.
It was almost like blending in with the air itself, hiding within it, making my true essence invisible to anyone who might be close enough to notice. The unique scent that marked me as someone who controlled all elements—something I couldn't risk revealing—was masked by this subtle disguise.
Once refreshed, I dressed in soft, light blue pajamas—comfortable and perfect for the quiet of the night. I let my hair dry naturally, the cool air from the balcony making the strands fall loosely around my shoulders.
I emerged from the restroom, feeling much lighter and more at ease. My room was dimly lit, and I could hear the soft murmur of voices from the other side of the room. My roommate, Sofia, was on the phone, speaking in hushed tones with someone. I didn't want to disturb her, so I quietly moved over to the balcony, hoping to get some fresh air while I called home.
I dialed my father's number, and after a few rings, his familiar voice came through.
"Arvi, my brave girl! How's everything?" he asked, his tone warm with pride.
"I'm here, Dad, at Vortex Academy," I replied, feeling a rush of mixed emotions. "It's... grander than I expected. And the students are already curious about the new girl."
He chuckled softly. "You're always going to stand out, Arvi. Just be yourself and remember what we talked about. This is a fresh start for you—a chance to learn and grow without everyone knowing who you are."
"Of course, Dad," I reassured him, feeling the familiar comfort in his words. "But I'll miss home. And the training grounds." I let out a light sigh, gazing over the academy grounds spread out beneath me.
A moment of silence stretched between us, both of us feeling the weight of this new chapter.
"If you need anything, we're just a call away," he reminded me. "And remember, Arvi, keep those powers in check. No need to draw unnecessary attention."
"Don't worry, I'll be careful," I said, glancing down at my hands, feeling the faint hum of my elemental energy.
We spoke a little longer before finally saying our goodbyes. As I hung up, my father's last words stayed with me: Be careful when you start trying to figure out those vision dragons. They're not something to be taken lightly.
I nodded to myself, his warning lingering in my mind. The vision dragons—those mysterious creatures tied to my powers—had been haunting my thoughts ever since I first became aware of them. They were connected to my abilities, and yet, I still didn't fully understand them.
I couldn't help but wonder what they meant and why they had been appearing to me in flashes of dreams and visions. But now, more than ever, I knew I needed to tread carefully. My father's words reminded me that knowledge of such things could be dangerous.

I closed my eyes for a moment, feeling the weight of his advice settle in my chest. I had to be careful.
With a sigh, I put my phone down and stared out at the academy grounds for a few more minutes. The stars were bright against the dark sky, and a quiet calm washed over me.
As I turned to head back inside, something caught my eye. I glanced up at the East Dormitory, where the top floor balcony was lit, and noticed a shadowy figure standing alone in the darkness.
I felt a strange pull, as though I were being drawn toward him. I squinted, but the darkness hid his features. There were two other figures briefly beside him, but they vanished inside, leaving him standing alone.
I felt a shiver run through me, an unfamiliar unease creeping into my mind. I couldn't make out his face, but something about the way he stood, still and unmoving, made my heart race.
Who is he? The question echoed in my mind, but the answer never came.
I stood frozen for a moment longer, then shook off the feeling and turned back inside. My room was quiet again, and Esme was still on the phone, oblivious to my quiet return.
I grabbed my phone and, needing to reach out to someone, opened the group chat with my friends from Aetheria Academy. The group was named "The Elemental Goofs"—a fitting title for a group of friends who were as chaotic as they were strong, always getting into adventures together.
I quickly typed:
"Hey guys, I'm officially at Vortex Academy! Missing you all already! It's so quiet here, and I feel kind of out of place. Also, did anyone else feel something strange when I got here? It's like... I can't shake this feeling. Anyway, I guess I'll survive, but I need to hear your voices soon. Love you all!"
Just as I was about to sit down, Esme, my roommate, looked up from the other side of the room. "Hey, Aria! Are you ready for dinner? The mess is about to open, and I thought we could head down together."
I nodded, grateful for the distraction. "Sounds good."
Esme and I walked out of the room together, the familiar hallway of the dormitory now feeling a little more like home. The corridor was busy, with students coming and going, all heading toward the mess for dinner.
We descended a set of stairs and turned a corner to the mess hall, where a line of students was already gathering. The mess at Vortex Academy was a spacious, modern building, with long tables that stretched across the large room.
There was a buffet-style setup on one side, with a variety of food —grilled meats, rice dishes, and fresh vegetables, as well as an array of desserts.
The atmosphere was lively, with the hum of voices filling the air, but there was an underlying sense of tension, as if everyone was sizing each other up.
We joined the line, and I took in the scene around me, curious about the students I would meet here. It was a mix of different people from various elemental backgrounds. The air was thick with the buzz of new friendships and rivalries.
Once we got our food, Esme led me to a corner of the mess hall where a group of students was sitting together. She introduced me to her friends, who were all air elementals.
"Guys, this is Aria," Esme said, motioning to me. "She's new here, just arrived from Aetheria Academy."
The group looked up, offering warm smiles. There was a tall girl with blonde hair, her eyes a soft gray, and a boy with spiky dark hair and sharp, blue eyes. Both wore the same air elemental symbol on their uniforms.
"This is Nova and Finn," Esme continued, pointing to the girl and the boy, respectively. "They're from the Air Kingdom, just like me."
"Nice to meet you, Aria," Nova said, her voice light and cheerful.
"Welcome to Vortex," Finn added, his tone more serious but still friendly. "I hope you like it here."
"Thanks," I replied, feeling a little out of place but trying to shake off the feeling. "I'm still getting used to everything. It's a lot to take in."
"Yeah, it can be overwhelming at first," Nova agreed. "But don't worry, you'll fit right in. We all help each other out."
As we were talking, the door to the mess opened, and three boys walked in, immediately drawing the attention of every student in the room.
Whispers and murmurs filled the air as everyone turned to look at them. The boys moved with an undeniable confidence, and their presence seemed to command the room.
Just then, I felt it—a sudden rush of warmth, a captivating fragrance that hit me like a wave. It was intense and powerful, like the sharp, fresh scent of pine after a storm mixed with something deep and musky, almost like smoke and earth, yet with a mysterious undertone of something wild and untamable. The scent overwhelmed my senses, strong yet strangely comforting, as if it were meant just for me.
I froze, my heart hammering in my chest as I struggled to breathe through the overpowering smell. The scent was doing something to me, pulling at the very core of my being, making my head spin. I could feel the blood rushing to my face, my skin tingling with heat. I barely managed to control myself, trying to keep my composure, but my body was betraying me.
I tried to find the source of the scent, my eyes scanning everywhere in the mess hall, desperate for some answer to this overwhelming pull. And then, instinctively, my gaze shifted toward the source. My eyes locked on the boy standing in the middle of the group. He was tall, his presence demanding attention even amidst the murmurs of the crowd. And as my eyes met his, it was like everything in the world stopped.
A wave of realization slammed into me with the force of a tidal wave, my heart pounding erratically in my chest. My eyes went wide in shock as the truth hit me like a jolt of electricity.
That boy. He was my mate.
