Chapter 7 – Falling Fast

Chapter 7 – Falling Fast

The combined entity is resting peacefully in the sleep chamber.

I will wait for her to regain consciousness on her own.

“Computer, what is the conversion status of continent Asgard?”

“Master, conversion of Continent Asgard is at eighty-six percent completion.”

“Understood. Retrieve the repair assistance vehicle and place it near the multicolored bridge on the Midheim side. I will return with the entity and oversee the final conversion status and organize the settlement formation from there.”

“Command confirmed, master. Retrieving repair assistance vehicle and placing near the bridge on the Midheim side.”

I switch the monitor to watch as the repair assistance vehicle is converted to storage mode and is tractor beamed to the designated location.

Once it arrives at the designated location, it changes back to encampment mode and awaits my arrival.

I return the monitor to its previous view of the planet.

“Uhhhhh…”

“You appear to finally be gaining consciousness.”

She sits up in the sleep chamber rubbing her eyes.

“Good morning, I think.”

“Regardless of that insight we are currently in orbit around planet Midengard. Current day-night cycles are not existent.”

“Wow this a different voice than I’m used to.”

“It is the one that would have belonged to the entity Lucretta had she had any grasp of language.”

“It seems like a cute enough voice.”

“I am not able to pass judgement on what should be deemed cute or not.”

“I think it’s cute so I’ll say good morning in a much cuter voice.”

“It is not morning here in space.”

“Well, it’s morning for me.”

“I assume it would be for you regardless of the day-night cycle. How are your parameters currently?”

“If you mean, how am I feeling, I guess my response would be…weird.”

“I surmise it may take some period to fully adjust to not only your combined spectral form but your new body.”

“I guess you’re right. I have so many stray memories from things I have never experienced and places I don’t know about.”

“It seems to be a side effect of the merger of beings from two different planets.”

“If you say so. It’s still all a giant haze.”

“Are you nominal enough to return back to planet Midengard?”

“Oh yeah! I’m in space!”

She climbs out of the sleep chamber and hastily rushes to the view screen, her bare feet pitter pattering on the metal floor as she goes.

“Wow! It’s such a beautiful planet! I only ever saw images from a computer screen…or was it a holo-monitor?”

“As you are experiencing memories from multiple beings, I would say that both are true.”

“The stars are also beautiful. I can’t believe I’m in space.”

“Technically everyone is traveling through space. Just some do so on vehicles.”

“You’re no fun or romantic.”

“I have no need to be either of those things.”

“Well, what do we do next?”

“Are you stable enough to return to planet Midengard?”

She raises both of arms up with her hands in in fists and pumps them slightly downward.

“I feel 元気…er I mean, I feel fine.”

“Hmm, you still have some Terran speech anomalies present. It should be normalized over time.”

“Does that mean I won’t be able to use 日本語 anymore?”

“You are a unique entity so; I do not have enough data to form a conclusion. You could eventually lose the language entirely but may have it retained as a secondary native language.”

“I really hope I don’t forget it.”

“That may entirely depend on you.”

“If you say so. Anyway, I’m ready to go whenever you are.”

“Understood. Computer prepare the transport pod for departure to the encampment site.”

“Transport pod ready for departure, master.”

“Oh, she sounds cute. Who is she?”

“That is the ship’s AI assistant to provide automation to planetary repair processes.”

“Oh, I see.”

“Follow me to the transport pod.”

“Okay.”

We exit the bridge area and enter the hallway where the entrances to several transport pod types are stored.

I open the one closest to the beginning of the hallway and motion for her to enter.

“This is the standard transport pod. We will depart to the surface of planet Midengard using this.”

She pokes just her head into the pod.

“We’re gonna use this to go back to the planet? Looks strange. Is it some sorta material transporter?”

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

“If you mean that we are materials and it transports us, then you are correct.”

“If you say so.”

We both enter the pod fully and I close the door.

“Computer, the pod is sealed and ready for inertial stasis and transport to the surface of planet Midengard. Location is the encampment mode near the multicolored bridge.”

“Enabling inertial stasis and launching pod to the surface of planet Midengard. Specific location: encampment mode near multicolored bridge.”

“Did you just say multicolored bridge, as in The Rainbow Bridge?”

“I did, please hold any further questions until we reach the surface.”

“But…”

As she starts her reply the stasis kicks in and she is unable to complete her response.

The decent occurs like many other times until just after atmospheric entry there is a loud sound that appears to come from the outside and the inertial stasis suddenly terminates while our bodies begin to float to the top of the pod’s passenger area as the force of the decent pulls our bodies upward.

“Mr. Ninety, is this always how you go to planets? It doesn’t seem very safe.”

“Negative. Somehow the inertial stasis was terminated. Computer, reinstate inertial stasis.”

Strange, there is no response.

“Computer, reinstate inertial stasis.”

Still no response.

“Mr. Ninety, this is starting to hurt.”

“Standby I will begin initiating emergency landing procedures.”

I reach for a panel and open it.

Inside is a handle which I grab as quickly as I can and use all my strength to pull it.

Once the lever is pulled, some gears can be heard and then a loud thud accompanied with a sudden shift in our weight balance.

The two of us fall to the floor of the pod.

I go over to the control panel start checking the pod’s systems.

Power is severely reduced; transmission lines are damaged.

What would have caused this damage?

“What’s going on?”

“It appears something hit the transport pod causing loss of power and connection to the computer.”

“But, we’re gonna be ok, right?”

“Our decent has been steadied. We should make landfall soon.”

“Why did it happen?”

“I do not have sufficient data to form a conclusion.”

“Clearly something hit us and it could have been something trying to kill us.”

“Your conjecture has a small amount of plausibility.”

“We should be nearing the ground so I should be able to reestablish communications.”

“But you said the lines were broken. How would you do that?”

“I should be able to reestablish communications via the encampment mode.”

“I see. I guess that makes sense.”

Once she finishes her reply, my connection via the encampment mode is restored and I hear computer’s voice.

“Master, connection reestablished.”

“Understood, what was the cause of the incident?”

“Master, an unknown object of reddish-brown hue struck the pod after reentry. The object sped off toward Continent Helheim.”

It appears aside from the Kirtov we are not alone on this planet.

“What’s wrong Mr. Ninety?”

“It appears we are not alone on this planet.”

“That sounds pretty scary.”

“It may indeed be so.”

“Computer, can you guide the pod to the encampment mode.”

“While the tractor beam on the encampment mode is weak it should be able to guide the transport pod to it the encampment mode, master.”

“Understood, deploy the tractor beam and guide the transport pod to the encampment mode.”

“Command confirmed, master.”

The pod jerks and we can feel the transport pod changing direction.

Shortly the transport pod lands near the encampment mode.

I open the transport pod’s entrance and exit it.

After I exit the transport pod, entity follows me out.

“Wow! I’m surprised we lived.”

She makes this remark as she looks at the damage on the transport pod.

“Indeed, it is good that the damage did not affect the emergency landing apparatus.”

“You weren’t kidding when you said it was dangerous here.”

“I would not give you a false statement.”

I leave the landing area, go to the control panel and begin monitoring the final percentage of the conversion.

While the conversion is finishing, I pull up a layout of Continent Asgard and begin planning the areas that will be placed with housing and plant and animal life.
