“Uhh, five more minutes…”
Please check your skills.
Vendel ignored the voice and started to drift off to sleep again, but Basil jumped on top of the man and started poking his face.
“Wake up lazy master, I want to eat.”
Vendel sat up and glared at the mouse. Basil glared right back.
“That’s what you were trying to say right? What’s a guy got to do in order to get some sleep?”

“And now the voice that tells me I leveled up is being annoying too. Fine! I’m up!”
Vendel got up and he and Basil ate a breakfast consisting of granola bars. After they had eaten and the camp had been packed up, Vendel spoke,
“Okay, show me my skills.”
Acknowledged.
Skills: Human Language Comprehension: Max Lvl Running: Lvl 2 Tame Beast: Lvl 2 Command Beast: Lvl 3 Instruct Beast: Lvl 1 Bond: Basil; Lvl 2
“Whoa, that’s a lot of new skills. Explain my skills for me?”
Acknowledged.
Tame Beast helps the skill user to tame beasts easier.
Command Beast helps the skill user to make clearer commands and makes the tamed beast more likely to obey orders against its nature.
Instruct Beast helps the tamed beast to more easily understand new ideas and learn from its master.
Bond: Basil is the bond between you and your tamed beast Basil. The higher the bond, the stronger and more intelligent Basil gets. When the Bond is maxed, certain benefits can apply to Basil.
Vendel thought about this for a while. It would seem that he needed to do more things with Basil that would raise their bond, because apparently the higher the bond, the stronger Basil would get. Vendel also considered the Command Beast skill. That was probably what he had used last night to get Basil to stand guard, and it would also explain its level.
Like all thoughts, one leads to another, and Vendel remembered something. He snapped his fingers and exclaimed,
“That’s right! Basil leveled up, but I didn’t do anything with him, so he must have gained levels through following my command to keep guard!”
Vendel stood from sitting beneath the tree and looked around the clearing. Satisfied that he had retrieved all his things, he told Basil to follow him and left.
“I guess I just have to command Basil to do or fight things and he then levels. And the more things we do together, the higher our bond becomes. And the higher our bond gets, the stronger he will be! And the stronger Basil is, the less things there will be that I have to run from!”

Vendel was quite happy with the situation and pondered whether he should try to tame the next monster he came across, or whether he should have Basil fight it. He decided to focus on Basil for now, and if he came across something strange, only then would he try to tame it.
********************************************
Vendel had been traveling for an hour now, and he had finally stopped. The reason being a big bug. Now normally Vendel would have ignored a big bug, or just squished it, but this bug was special.
Level 3 Monster: Giant Worker Ant
“A wild giant worker ant appears! Go Basil I choose you!”
Both Basil and the Ant looked at Vendel with disdain.
“Oh, c’mon! That was hilarious, don’t look at me like that! Fine, Basil go! Take it down!”
Upon hearing Vendel’s words, Basil leaped at the ant with his fangs bared. The ant, which had been focused on Vendel reared back in surprise when Basil latched onto its back with his fangs and started scratching at it with his claws. The ant, in an attempt to throw Basil, started scuttling around quickly in a circle, but its armored exoskeleton had been too thoroughly pierced by the Scritch Mouse’s sharp fangs to throw him off. Soon the ant stumbled to the ground and lay defeated. With a quick bite, Basil removed its head. He then dug a small hole and dumped the ant in. Filling it up again, Basil then marked the ground where the ant was buried.
“Eww, what are you doing Basil? Wait, are you marking this so that you can come back to it later?”
Vendel thought on this and decided that it must be a survival instinct. Killing something and then leaving it out would just get the kill eaten by some stronger creature, so the Scritch Mice buried it. That way it would be safe, and they could come back to it later. At this point, Vendel had an epiphany; Basil had probably leveled up so much because he had killed other monsters during the night, and Vendel never knew because of this instinct.
“Well, nice job Basil. Want a snack?”
Acknowledged. Skill: Command Beast Lvl 4 Skill: Bond: Basil; Lvl 3
“Nice. Sorry strange voice but it’s impossible to give you a snack, otherwise I would give you one.”
Vendel and Basil shared a snack to celebrate, and then Vendel decided to take the opportunity to teach Basil how to fight better. He instructed Basil that sometimes it was better to run or sneak closer, then attack the creature from underneath, or from behind. To test this out, Vendel ordered Basil to find another Giant Worker Ant. After a while of searching, they found one, and Vendel told Basil to sneak around behind and under it. Then Vendel acted as the bait.
Level 4 Monster: Giant Worker Ant
“Hey Ant! Come get some!”
The cry, mixed with a bit of wildly jumping around, attracted the Ant’s attention, and as it moved towards Vendel to attack, Basil darted up from behind and latched onto the bottom of the ant, swiftly clawing out its insides and killing it. They proceeded to do this multiple times so that Basil could fully comprehend the strategy. In doing so, Vendel inevitably leveled.

“Niiiice. Basil, by the time I’m done with you, you’re going to be the strongest mouse alive.”
Basil squeaked in pleasure and finished burying the Giant Worker Ant. Vendel grinned and looked at the sun. Judging it to be a little before noon, he broke out a few more granola bars and gave some to Basil.
“Here ya go Basil. That’s enough training for today. Lets head for the ocean, then we’ll follow the shore to the town.”
So Vendel climbed the nearest tree, looked for the ocean, and then set off. He was excited to see what the town was like, so he decided to run towards the ocean so that he could get there sooner. It took him a couple hours to reach the coast, during that time he and Basil fought another couple of Ants, and they drove off a Scritch Mouse. Vendel also leveled a skill.
Skill: Running Lvl 3
When he had finally arrived at the shore, he grinned. It was his first time seeing any ocean up close before. He shut his eyes and breathed in the scent for a while. Then he opened his eyes, bent down to pet Basil, and turned his gaze towards the town in the distance.
