"What?"

Vendel stood for a bit pondering this new bombshell that had dropped on him. There was obviously some intelligent force behind these words that formed in his head, but the thought was still hard to process. How did this whole level thing work anyway?

To hear your Class, levels, skills, perks, and titles, simply say menu.

"Uhh, Menu?"

Vendel Wane:

Dreamfruit Snatcher

You stole a dreamfruit from the tree and lived to tell about it.

"So that's what that purple thing was."

Vendel looked over his skills again, and figured that the best thing to do was to continue moving, that way he got further away from the forest and bear beast. If he moved quickly enough, he could maybe get halfway to the town that he had seen by the ocean. Vendel looked out again. Yep, there was no mistaking that there was indeed an ocean, and that there was a port town within sight. Granted he was standing on a pretty high hill and had a good view of the area. Judging by the posistion of the sun in the sky and the weather, he probably had five or so hours until sunset.

Vendel went down the hill and started running towards the town. He had decided to run so that he could test his skill. There did not seem to be any changes to how he ran, or how easy it was, but Vendel thought that maybe he was moving a little faster than usual. The plains around him were pretty vast, and the grass only broke when there were large patches of flowers and trees. The town seemed to be a couple miles away, and walking there would take a while, but Vendel didn't care. He had gone to the state park to enjoy the outdoors and have a small adventure, so the fact that he was walking unarmed in another world where there were monsters that could eat him in a few bites did not concern him. He ran for a couple yards then started walking again, and he repeated this cycle. He was rewarded after an hour of this.

Skill: Running Lvl 2

Content with this, Vendel stopped running in spurts and walked for another hour before stopping by a tree. He then climbed the tree and looked around.

"Wow, I really didn't come that far. At least there aren't any monsters around."

The thought that the monsters could be small popped into his mind and he started to worry a bit. However an empty stomach conquers all fears of monsters, imaginary or otherwise. So Vendel jumped out of the tree and, reaching into his backpack, took out a knife. He then cut away all the tall grass that was within ten feet of the tree. Then he cut off several branches of the tree and set about getting a small fire lit. During this procedure, the tall grass beyond his 'safe' area started to rustle. Vendel dove into his backpack for one of his knives, this one being more suited to chopping a monster into bits. He backed away from the rustling grass towards the tree, but before he could reach the tree, a mouse the size of a kitten jumped out at him.

Stolen novel; please report.

Level 4 Monster: Scritch Mouse

The mouse's leap cleared the ten feet easily, but Vendel whapped it out of the air with his fist before it could hit him. It hit the ground with a thud and a squeak and struggled to get up again, for Vendel had hit it in the head. It hit the ground with a thud and a squeak and struggled to get up again, for Vendel had hit it in the head. The time it took for it to regain its senses was enough for Vendel to pin it down and reverse the grip on his knife to kill it. The mouse, seeming to know what was going to happen, closed its eyes and accepted its fate, waiting for the killing blow. The knife never came down. Vendel was too much of a coward to kill it, and he also thought that the scritch mouse was adorable. So he grabbed it and quickly threw it into the tall grass. He then finished lighting the fire.

“We have ignition! Woo! Time for food.”

With the fire lit, Vendel set about cutting some branches from the tree, and with some equipment in his pack, he rigged up a contraption that let him safely balance a small pot over the fire. He then took out one of three cans of emergency rations. The can contained a mush made from chicken and vegetables, or something like that. He also took out a small flavoring packet for the mush. Vendel didn’t have much in the way of food, because his acquaintance who drove him to the park was going to return the next day with all the necessary supplies. Vendel had four filled water bottles in his backpack along with an entire box of granola bars. Taking some water and pouring it into the pot to hydrate the mush, Vendel then waited while munching on a granola bar for the food to warm up. When it had become warm enough, he opened up the flavor packet and stirred it in with a short spatula.

During this time, the scritch mouse had returned and made its way towards Vendel again. This time it slowly waddled towards him, and when it was a few feet away, it lay down and watched him, though it mostly just watched his granola bar. Vendel had been ready to bap it again, but seeing its lack of hostility, he let the matter rest. Seeing the mouse lay there watching his granola, he finished taking the wrapper off and tossed the rest of his bar to the mouse. Vendel then grabbed a bowl from his pack and filled it with some of the heated flavored mush. Both man and mouse finished their food quickly, and when they were done they looked at each other.

“Well, what am I going to do with you? Feed you? Keep you? Kill and eat you? No, not that last one. Hmm, well your rather adorable, so I guess I’ll keep you.”

Acknowledged. The Level 4 Monster: Scritch Mouse is now named Basil.

“Sweet! Nice to meet you Basil, welcome to the team.”

Vendel held out his hand to the mouse, and it stared at him with a bit of confusion.

“It’s called a handshake. You put your paw in mine and we shake.”

“Squeak.”

With that explanation Basil put his paw in Vendel’s hand and they shook. This marked the beginning of many years of partnership.

“Okay Basil, you stand watch while I hit the hay. Wait, it’s getting darker right?”

Vendel looked up and stared in shock at the sun. It was indeed getting dark, but in all this time the sun had not stirred from its place in the sky. It was definitely turning night, but the sun was in the same position.

“What is going on with the sun?”

Basil squeaked and stared at Vendel, obviously disgusted with the man’s incomprehension of the sun.

“Yeah, yeah, I get it. I’m dumb. You stand watch while I get some sleep. Goodnight Basil.”

“Squeak squeaken.”
