Chapter 2 - Fundamentals

Ethan's gaze shifted upward to the crystals hanging from chains on the ceiling. They emitted a dim light, and he wondered if there was a way to enhance their brightness. Since he couldn't spot a ladder or any means to reach them, he set aside the idea for the moment. Along the walls stood several cabinets, and he began rifling through them one by one.

As he explored, he discovered an assortment of materials: raw ores, crystal chips, a box of small crystals, powders, and even some simple jewelry, among other miscellaneous items. Furrowing his brow, he closed the last cabinet and turned his attention to the end of the room, where a sheet covered a wall emitting a strange whirring sound. Carefully, he pulled away the sheet, revealing gears embedded in a hole in the stone.

Puzzled by their purpose, he scrutinized the gears, noting a handle attached to one of them. Although separate from the rest, it appeared capable of connecting two larger gears. Shrugging, he decided to give it a try and pushed the handle. The gear seamlessly slid in between the moving gears, setting them in motion. Several loud clunks resonated from within the wall, followed by a metallic whine above him. Ethan waited with anticipation, and just as he was about to turn away, something extraordinary occurred—the crystals in the ceiling began gradually increasing in brightness. A grin spread across his face, realizing that the gear system was a means of transferring energy.

With the workshop now bathed in bright light, Ethan surveyed his surroundings and noticed details he hadn't observed before. A nearly invisible door in the stone wall slid open as the gears activated. Intrigued, he approached the entrance and peered inside, revealing a sizable circular room. It housed a large forge with a medieval appearance, equipped with a bellow for air, a massive anvil adorned with a hefty hammer, and several work tables scattered with metal components. Aside from a ventilation hole in the ceiling to vent smoke and fumes, there was nothing particularly noteworthy. Letting out a sigh, he returned to the main workshop area. Having explored most of the space, he sat down on the bed where he had initially awakened, contemplating his circumstances.

"So, I have a workshop, which means I could potentially craft something to defend myself against those creatures. But since I'm no skilled fighter, I'd prefer a ranged weapon, like a crossbow," he mused aloud. "However, operating a crossbow requires physical strength, and that's not my forte. I'd need a mechanism to crank it."

Ethan was familiar with the theory behind crafting a crossbow, but it would undoubtedly demand considerable time and effort. Besides, he risked starving before completing such a project. He had yet to come across any edible provisions, and the absence of running water troubled him.

Glancing up, he noticed the book resting on the workbench, narrowing his eyes. "Am I seriously considering the magical approach?" he questioned himself. With a resigned sigh, he admitted, "I guess I am." Rising from the bed, he walked over to the workbench and opened "Enchanting for the Simple-Minded," immersing himself in the first chapter, ready to delve into the world of magic.

‘’Chapter 1: Enchanting Fundamentals

Section: Understanding the Essence of Enchantment

Welcome, aspiring enchanter, to the enlightening realm of enchanting. In this chapter, we shall delve into the fundamental principles that underpin the art of infusing objects with magical properties. To embark upon this journey, we must first grasp the essence of enchantment itself.

Enchantment is not merely the act of reciting incantations or waving a wand. It is the harmonious fusion of imagination, intent, and profound comprehension. Before we can shape the forces of magic, we must seek to understand the very fabric of existence and the intricate connections that govern it.

At the core of successful enchantment lies the concept of understanding. To craft an enchantment, it is not enough to merely possess knowledge of the desired outcome. We must unravel the underlying truths, the essence of what we seek to create. Let us explore a few examples to illustrate this point.

Consider the enchantment of light. Light, as we perceive it, is but a tiny fraction of a vast electromagnetic spectrum. To weave an enchantment that illuminates, one must comprehend the nature of light itself. From how energy moves in continuous waves, to how different kinds of waves produce different colours, understanding the essence of light empowers us to harness its radiance and imbue it into objects.

Similarly, let us ponder the enchantment of fire. Fire, seemingly a simple manifestation of heat and light, is, in truth, a profound interplay of energy, heat, and air. To craft an enchantment that conjures fire, one must grasp the delicate equilibrium between these elements. By harnessing this knowledge, we can awaken the transformative power of combustion within objects, bringing forth flickering sparks, or roaring flames at will.

However, the quality of the chosen object also plays a significant role in the success of an enchantment. A better-quality item possesses a higher capacity to contain and preserve the enchanted properties. It becomes a vessel capable of sustaining the magic embedded within it for extended periods. The craftsmanship, materials, and inherent properties of the item contribute to its enchantment potential.

Therefore, dear reader, understand that enchanting is not a mere recitation of spells or a haphazard mingling of ingredients. It is a meticulous dance of knowledge and insight, where understanding paves the path to extraordinary creations. Embrace the pursuit of comprehension, for it is the key to unlocking the full potential of enchantment.

In the subsequent chapters, we shall delve deeper into the intricacies of enchanting, exploring the various schools of magical thought and unveiling techniques to refine your understanding and application of enchantment. Remember, the journey of enchanting is one of constant learning and discovery. With each step, your powers as an enchanter shall grow, allowing you to weave wonders that transcend the realm of the mundane.’’

Ethan immersed himself in reading the first chapter and was pleasantly surprised by the scientific principles and understanding of the natural world that underpinned enchanting. It appeared that proper enchanting was a blend of science and magic, which brought a smile to Ethan's face.

He realized that this kind of magic might be his calling, and with practice, he could harness modern scientific knowledge to create something extraordinary. The prospect of experimentation ignited his excitement, and he began pondering what he wanted to create.

There were three immediate needs to address: food, water, and self-protection. While uncertain about finding food, he reckoned that caves often contained water or at least moisture on the walls. If he could harvest that moisture, it would be a significant help. However, venturing outside meant confronting the creatures lurking in the darkness, so he needed light and a means to defend himself.

Searching for inspiration, he remembered the crystals. If he could project light through a crystal, he could manipulate its reflection in the desired direction. He would need to mount it on something, of course. Next on the list was a ranged and efficient weapon, something intimidating enough to ward off attacks or lethal enough to swiftly end any confrontation.

As he mulled over these ideas, a grin crept across Ethan's face. Every skilled magic wielder required a specific item—a trademark tool of the arcane: a wand!

Ethan rose from his seat and started exploring the workshop. He had previously discovered some long pieces of wood in a cabinet, and he retrieved a few of them. He also gathered the crystals and some of the metal rings he had come across. Standing at the workbench, he contemplated the items with a furrowed brow.

Firstly, he needed to carve the wand into a shape that was comfortable to hold. Secondly, he had to attach the crystal, for which he would require some kind of adhesive. As for the metal rings, he had no idea yet.

Lastly, there was the enchantment itself, a domain in which he had little knowledge. For now, he decided to focus on what he could accomplish and set aside worries about the magical aspect for later.

He grabbed a small carving knife from the wall and began the slow process of whittling the stick. It took about an hour until he felt satisfied with its shape. Although rough and unattractive, as long as it served its purpose, aesthetics mattered little. He proceeded to search the cabinets for different jars, in need of some form of adhesive. Remembering that in medieval times, glue was made from animal bones or skin, with gelatin extracted and left to cool in jars.

He knew the glue would likely have a translucent, yellowish, or even brownish appearance. It would possess a distinct smell, but he also considered the possibility of using resin from trees. Taking his time, he carefully examined the jars, opening and tentatively sniffing each one. Eventually, he found a thick and sticky liquid that he believed to be the glue he sought. Now, he needed to locate a suitable container or pot.

After some searching, he discovered a small metal container with a handle in the forge, presumably used for melting metals, but it would serve his purpose just fine. Spotting flint and steel nearby, along with plenty of old, extremely dry wood, he felt well-prepared.

After a while, he managed to ignite a small fire and poured a portion of the glue into the pot. He melted it slowly and, once it reached the desired consistency, he hurried back to the workbench. Using a brush from one of the small compartments, he generously applied the melted glue to the tip of the wand. He had carved a small indentation to create a larger area for it to adhere to, and finally attached the small crystal at the end.

With patience, he held it in place for an extended period before gently setting it down. He examined his handiwork and grinned, saying to himself, "Ethan the wand maker. I reckon even Ollivander would be proud... Well, maybe not, but at least I managed to put something together." Now came the challenging part—the actual magic.

He left the wand on the table, allowing it time to dry properly, and dedicated himself to understanding the magic system. He recalled the earlier encounter with the screen and how he had managed to minimize it, but he suspected there might be other functions to explore. It was time for a bit of scientific experimentation... magical science!
