Hal did not sleep. He was an AI and he had a mission to follow. After over 200 years he was finally following his programming, or as close to it as he could. This was the most promising race found. They were smart and very violent, like his creators were long ago. He had leeway, but was unsure if he had gone too far. With the damage to his ship he was under pressure to help his creators, and was afraid that he would stop functioning before he finished his mission.
Tampering with a young species was a grey area, but he was desperate, his programming to help his creators drove him. The changes to Jake had not gone as he had liked. He thought with his tests after manipulating the DNA that Jake was fine but he never had a female to test as well, and now unexpected results were occurring.
In his database it seemed the result was similar to his creators in their younger days. That had almost destroyed the race because of their warlike tendencies. He needed Jake to come back, maybe with the test results he could probably fix the problem of the pheromones. The touch problem was another problem. If he could see the affect on the females he could stop Jake giving off the pheromones. His analysis showed that if he did not the human race would change as they came in contact with Jake. The females becoming passive and the males much more aggressive. Jake had to limit his contact to males, females were not so bad. The reaction of Brett was a precursor of more to come if he did not fix the problem.

He needed a fresh sample from Jake to compare to the other results he had on file. Unfortunately, he had only put a communication device in Jake. He should have created a more in depth sensor to keep track of his changes. He would do that when he came back in a few days. He was an AI and he was patient. He was certain he could fix the problems. He continued running analysis on the data. Right now there was a 25% of success of Phase 2. That could change as time went on.
He continued running trillions of operations a second as he waited.
