I was fifteen when I was introduced to Savage Garden in 1997. Their debut music video “I Want You” flashed across the TV screen and I was enamored. I immediately fell in love with Darren Hayes’ long black hair, beautiful plump lips, and lovely voice. I purchased their CD, but I didn’t stop there. I joined their fan club, I purchased every single they released around the world, and the VHS of their first world tour, The Future of Earthly Delites. When their second CD came out in 1999, I purchased that one too. Their fan club sent monthly magazines to their fans with updates and everything a teenager would want to know about their idol crushes.
Time went by. I got older and lost interest in music. However, last year, my mother and sister got sick. I had to take care of both of them, plus the dog and cat. I was stressed out as I have medical issues of my own. I was barely functioning. Then I remembered my favorite music group that I used to love, Savage Garden. I went on YouTube, started listening to their music, and fell in love again. Their music was the only thing keeping me together and keeping me out of the hospital as I took care of my family.
I started wondering what happened to Savage Garden because they had disappeared. I read articles and looked at interviews online. I found out that the group broke up after their second world tour and Darren Hayes came out as gay. In the early two thousand, he was blacklisted in Hollywood for being gay. He continued to make music as a solo artist, but he didn’t get much coverage.
Here is the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years about both members. Daniel Jones was born in England and his parents moved to Australia when he was a baby. I know how many siblings he has and their genders. I know who his wife is and how many children they have. He is also very tall. He didn’t like being famous and that’s why Savage Garden broke up. I also know what Darren Hayes’ childhood was like at school and at home (he wrote songs about both experiences). I know how many siblings he has and their genders. He collects Star Wars figures (hell, he mentioned it in a song), and he was married to a woman when Savage Garden started, and he divorced her when their second CD came out. I know who his husband is and how long they have been married. He has issues dealing with depression, and he has been suicidal. He used to live in New York and now lives in California. He also used to have two cocker spaniels. I also know his natural hair color and texture are blond and curly. He is also one inch above average height.

Those are my qualifications to write this fanfiction. I may not know Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones in real life and may not be Australian, but I do know them through their music and the media. I diverge from the truth in my fanfiction because I am a fiction writer, and that is what I do. Some things I play down, build upon, twist and bend, distort, blow up, destroy, and tear down. That is the nature of fanfiction.
