TWO: the tutorial

'what the fu-' Josef would begin to shout until his voice was drowned out as his mind was like being hijacked. As quick as the capsule had come down, he was now in a field, blue skies with a few clouds – grass to his knees. In the distance was a circular floor with a sizable padding between itself and the grass surrounding it: and on that circle were five large statues.

It was scary, he would turn as he stared. No matter where he turned, the notification would stay with his eyesight and in the middle of his vision but to the top. Wherever his head would swing, it would stay affixed to his vision.

Mentally command a ‘swipe’ to dismiss the notification.

His eyes would follow from the left to the right as he watched the notification disappear from the screen and fade to the bottom right - but that didn’t stop him using his hand like the newbie he was. In the bottom right hand corner of his vision was a toolbar: faint, and desaturated and he could still see through it.

Even if he was looking from left to right, the icons would always be there. This is new. Josef thought to himself. The thought of him being in a game and staying there had not even been on his mind up until about a few months ago.

Character, Inventory, Skills, Party, Guild… Josef would think to himself as he looked at them, innately seeming to know what they were. They were also intuitive with the icons being a person, a bag and a sword and shield and so on.

Josef didn’t quite understand until he did. But then when he did, his eyes widened. The knowledge was right there now, as if it had always been, like he understood it. As though he had questioned it, it had been answered. How the fuck did this not translate to real world application? Slap these bad boys on a doctor and have even the most average joe performing to-

He placed a hand to his head in a sudden rush of pain and nausea that caused him to wobble from his standing position. 'Ah- ahAH'

Truly ground breaking technology... they were able to create a corporeal informational form that Josef was currently using - like occupying memory in a computer. That form could be fed information, which was how he’d learned everything he needed to know about the game in the starting phase - this intelligence did not yet carry over into the physical form in the real world.

For now.

'Ow.…' Josef would exclaim, still confused at the situation. He would put his hands on his hips with the nausea passing, and his eyebrows furrowed as he contemplated the new information in his brain.

He was in the world of Libergaea. The lore spanned with a rich history going back millennia with tales of demons and gods, but only select pieces were available to him now. The known history was that the world descended from the seed of the god tree (their explanation for the big bang): growing throughout the forest of time and space until it settled upon a barren and desolate planet and fertilised it to the world that came today.

Much of Alcatraz Co’ team for game design put lore and mechanics as the focus for Sanctity Online and everything else was set around it.

Josef had managed to summarise; the much longer lore could be read if he wanted to. He might, sometime. For now, it wasn’t really an issue.

He would stop, looking left to right without his head moving, suspicious.

Then he would look down. He was standing. Had he not been kneeling before?

And then he fell over.

'uHH..?..?' he was confused as it happened. Even in the faint feeling of shoes over his feet, the wiggling of his toes. It was like his body wasn’t prepared to accept that he was a cripple - had been... Josef would tentatively tense his legs, feeling the toes wiggle further, pressing them against the very outside of the boots. The shock of not having walked for as long as he had, his mind had already told him it was not possible.

'Oh my god….' Even Josef wasn’t impervious from placing a hand over his mouth in surprise. Something that he hadn’t felt in a while and never thought he’d get to again. It was hard to express the feeling of satisfaction and longing, and a crippling shock at feeling. He didn’t waste any time standing up, jumping on the spot a few times.

'WAHHOOOOOOOOO!' Josef would give a victory pump, tears streaming down his face. His eyes set on the monuments around him and would begin to walk- and looking down towards his legs as he moved. The joy had overridden any of the other senses, from the smell of grass to the flicks of movement against his shoes from the grass.

And he fell over a second time - laughing, and crying at the same time, spittle of laughter, and then the wetness of his face, he pulled himself aside - feeling at his own face. Was he crying outside of - his real life body as well? He would feel at his legs, eyes wide with the desire being fulfilled. It wasn’t to have children or amass wealth. Just being able to walk was exhilarating. But it had been two years, for every couple of steps he took he was almost falling over - having forgotten what it was like to raise his legs up meant that he was catching the floor as he walked. And all too long forgotten as the knee-high grass brushed against his body.

He would set out in a jog, keeping his balance as he moved. Why hadn’t he done this sooner? Right now he was raising his legs higher than they needed to but his legs were well and truly working for what he could tell.

The running caused sense responses that he hadn’t been prepared to accept, with the sway of the grass caressing another, the feel of blades tickling his knees and the light heat from the sun. All things that Josef knew didn’t exist in his new apartment. He would step past a bush of lavender: tearing a piece and placing it to his nose. 'That’s fucking insane…' he would mutter to himself.

His direction took him towards the monuments in the distance. He had earlier seen monuments – five to be exact spread apart evenly on a circular platform. Dark, and standing out in regards to the green fields he stood in currently.

Josef quickly got to the monument and out of the grassy area. He brought himself to the edge of the circular platform. It was dark, almost like obsidian, beckoning him to come closer.
