Chapter 59: Just Another Morning

"Lady", I asked as we were gasping like dying fishes in the middle of nowhere, "Do you believe in God?"

It was probably not even humanly possible to run this fast and this far. But there we were, though on the brink of death, but for now very much alive too.

"Seraph", she didn't look my way, she was too busy catching her breath, "That's personal."

I wanted to ask her if she didn't think this was a miracle. We should have been dead. We really should have been.

We had been surrounded in the bank, our hands raised in the air and some dozen cops pointing their guns at our heads, not to mention the dead bodies in that small bank.

That was before the roof of the bank caved in. I don't know how we actually managed to get out of there. It was all Lady's doing. I later learned that the place had been rigged. I suppose the thugs intended to blow the place up after they were done there. Lady knew of it. She had taken the trigger from Iori's corpse just before the cops made in. If not for the explosion, we wouldn't have made it out. In any case, her plan after that entailed running as fast we could. I wonder how many were chasing us, there sure were a lot of bullets flying all around us. Yet we were never hit, if not for a miracle, what could it be?

"We made it quite far", she had stabilized from her 'gasping for life' phase, I had too, "I don't remember the way back."

Indeed, Lady was terrible with directions. I remember it was her directions that landed Chopper in a whole another continent when he really needed to go to the town next over. She never actually gave him good directions. For some reason, he followed what she told him. I guess it happens to the best of us.

"Lady", I finally decided to ask, "You didn't have to kill that guy back there, you know. Wasn't he your friend?"

"Friend? You're kidding! Didn't you hear him calling me a heartless b-"

"Please don't change the topic!"

"I'm not!"

I sighed, "Lady, why did you kill him?"

She remained silent. Then she sat beside me and looked up at the sky. It was a nice morning.

"Everyone has a time. Some of us go way past that, but there...we are not there. We are gone. We disappeared so long ago. What remains is just some useless emotion that's too stubborn to give up. It's not always a good thing. But that's just how things are", she replied.

"I don't think that even then we're completely gone. There must be a part of us that stayed...right?"

She chuckled, "It's funny you should say that...ironic, indeed."

"Lady?"

A long pause ensued.

"I met them a long time ago. The two brothers. They were opposites and yet so similar. In the end, I suppose for those two, there was no reality like the reality of their blood bond. Those things are so rare to see and also very heavy to carry. It was the three of us...I'm sure that's how they saw it. To be honest, I didn't want to be involved. I guess you could say, in the end I messed up."

"How did you see things, then?"

She looked at me and smiled. Sometimes, she looked really different. I can't seem to remember a concrete picture of her. What did she look like? There's a sketch of her, sure but its way too empty. So much to fill in. I wonder if I'll ever be able to do that.
