Chapter 9. The storm

Chapter 9. The storm

As I walked with limited speed, the snow covered me as my bear pelt cape and hood flapped happily around, using my thick bracelet to cover my eyes as I walk through the cloudy and cold snow that blinded me, I shouted “ DOUGLAS!”... It echoed through the forest. But no birds showed any sign of life… They left ages ago.

The once lushy forest that reflected the sun brightly, now only rustled, as the cold and eerie wind out of snow blew past everything. Clouds couldn't be seen, but still the sun tried its best to shine brightly through the cold air filled with snow.

It was a heavy snow storm, as I walk slowly on the cobblestone through the thick snow on the main road. I didn’t know if my quest would fail if he dies…. But all those days for nothing? Desperation crept closer to me, I picked up pace, I can’t let the snow cover the tracks…

It’s a wagon godsake, they must be somewhere on the road… I can’t give up, my rewards depends on this!

“DOUGLAS I WANT MY GOLD!”

...

After hours of walking through the snow that now covered my waist, I was happy that I decided to buy the barbarian set… The cold resistance proved itself worthy of its name.

“DOUGLAS!” I shouted, lost my breath and stumbled face first into the snow.

Whate?! No! Don’t tell me!

Turning around, fingers icy cold, I dug the soft and cold snow.

Feeling around the snow where I stumbled, worried that it was a Douglas in ice block, I felt a warm and fluffy pelt…

Huh? “Tom and jerry?”

A faint “Moo!” could be heard… Soon after two fluffy heads with glimmering eyes stuck out from the waist length snow beside each other.

“Moo…” Both of them… said…   (Hi, master’s boss!)

“...”

“Moo…” (Boss, why so quiet?! )

“Moo…” (Please don’t eat me! I lost our wagon...)

“Why are you Oxes here?”

“MOOOO!…” (Those bastards took my master and forced us to obey!)

I facepalmed, what am I asking, obviously he should be nearby… I should ask about their master instead.

“Have you guys seen Douglas?”

“MOOO!” Suddenly they rose from the snow, that cracked the smooth surface like a earthquake.   (BOSS they took him to the mountain of death!)

Where is their wagon? Eh, who cares...

“MOOOO!” they nodded and tried to point somewhere with their heads.    (FOLLOW me boss!)

Heh, who said Oxes was only made out of beef?! “Show me the way!”

“MOO!” (Boss doesn’t fear the mountain of death where thousands of adventures has lost their lives!)

“Moo!” (He is our beloved boss for a reason!)

Quickly they pushed away the snow and walked towards the dark forest, while looking back once in a while to check if I was following.

Staring towards the forest filled with shadows as the Winter Oxes made a path, I could see a giant mountain that the snowy trees and the cloud of the storm desperately tried to cover...

“Moo!” One of them said, as I stood there. (Boss, you coming?)

“Oh, coming!”

“Clack, Clack, Clack, Clack, Clack” The sound of bones hitting each other could be heard nearby.

“MOO!” (Boss, skeletons nearby!)

Huh? “Shit, a skeleton commander…” I unsheathed my modified steel axe and readied myself for battle.

“Clack, Clack, Clack, Clack, Clack” ( OXES! MEAAT! nOM NOm nOM, fRIEnds! Come! rAise for a feast!)

“Moo!” The oxe started to share their shivering behind me.  (Boss help! They want to eat me, I don’t taste good)

As the snow covered my waist, a few skeletons popped out of the snow a few meters around me. Quickly counting them, they were around 5 of them including the commander. 2 were archers at my sides, while the rest was some kind of warrior armored with broken gear at front of me near the commander.

Thumb rule nr 6 TONY! weak mobs first from ranged to melee, boss later.

Battling the snow that limited my movement, my vision and strength. I prayed that my enemies had the same problem as I tried to find them in the snowy clouds that camouflaged them. Luckily, their blue shiny eyes blew their cover. Raising my axe, I threw it against a random skeleton trying to unsheathe their half broken bow. The skeleton archer shattered into pieces.

Phew… low level skeletons I hope…

The soldiers moved towards me with their bucklers as they pushed away the snow at front of them that barely affected them, as the commander watched the scene.

Lucky me I guess. Thumb rule nr 6, try to face 1 enemy at a time.

Moving to the left side of my enemies so that the second skeleton was forced to stay behind the one next to him, the oxes shivered behind me as I raised my axe and chopped the wooden buckler that cracked but deflected my attack.

With my steel axe in the air, the skeleton counterattacked with his chipped iron sword by raising it to the air for a slash. Instinctively, I tried to kick the skeleton in the torso, covered by a broken chestpiece so that I could knock it back before taking damage.

The skeleton with burning eyes stared confusingly at me… As his chipped sword broke and landed in the snow behind him...

HAH, my armor is too strong!

“HAHAHAHAH!” Destroying the skeletons at front of me, while the boss soullessly stood and watched, I was now waiting patiently for him with my axe resting on my shoulder.

“Clack, Clack” The skeleton said something and raised his blade and heavy steel shield (You bested my soldiers, now it is my turn!)

Crap… A heavy steel shield… If I use my weapon throw, I risk the chance of losing my weapon…

As the large skeleton with his towering shield pushing away the snow towards me. I too walked backwards, trying to find a way to defeat him.

Huh… Where is the Oxes? I can’t feel them behind me… Damn… Fight the curiosity, I can’t turn my head around in the moment of battle! If I remember right, he will charge me the moment I lose my concentration.

Now walking around the skeleton that followed me with the towering shield, I walked backwards in a large circle so that I could see where the Oxes vanished to.

The sudden charge by the skeleton took me by surprise.

CRAP! What a mistake!

Laying there with my back on the cold snow, the skeleton walked towards me. Slowly the sword covered my vision. The chipped steel that covered the snowy background. The blue eyes and the mouth that kept laughing.

Am I gonna die here?
