Chapter 2. Winter's Hold

Chapter 2. Winter's Hold

With a flash of light I appeared at the middle of a snowy street.

Brrr… Shivering as the cold and snowy breeze flew past me with tiny snow crystals that melted on my skin, I hugged myself to keep my warmth. Looking at my beginner clothings I gave out a sigh, as they were tattered to the point that I wondered if I should just remove it and walk around naked.

Looking around the vicinity to see where I was, I found myself at front of a gigantic gate surrounded by a icy forest. Trying to look up at the tall structure I struggled as it felt that my neck would break if I tried more than necessary. Hah… I breathed out that created a white fog at front of my mouth and soon after I took a heavy sniff in through the nose to smell the air of the surroundings.

A rustic, coaly and the soothing smell of the forest could be smelled as I shook my head in delight of the Second World. Ah, nothing beats the taste of the fresh air and moisture of this world…

Anyways, I need to find some directions and the first thumb rule is to find a citizen. Well lets ask a gua...

“Watch out! ICE SPIKE!” Someone yelled from above.

Instinctively using my skill “dodge” as a rogue, I instead stumbled backwards into the cold and deep snow next to a tree that unexpectedly covered my whole body.

AH! I forgot that this is a new toon! Argh Cold!!

“SPLACK!” “Splinter!”

… A tiny drop of sweat, ran from my forehead to my neck even though it was deadly cold as I sat there in the depths of the snow. That... Was way too CLOSE! If I had just stood there, when I did… I trembled.

Stay in the snow any longer and you get a cold

Oh, right… Jumping quickly out of the snow and brushing my clothes off to avoid the status effect. I then inspected the scene before me at the snowy cobblestone street. A enormous ice spike in pieces at front of me had fallen from above presumable from the wall, which nearly split my head in two or so it seems.

“Oi! Son!” I could hear someone yell from the gates as it slowly raised.

Looking at the armed man with heavy armor sewn together with a bear pelt to keep his warmth, I noticed that he had the tabard of the Winter’s Hold. It was a blue and white checkered tabard with a fort icon at the middle as did his shield.

So that’s where I am… Far to the north of Wintergrasp. Where the citizens battle against the cold but beautiful snow as the white clouds above passed by.

“Are you alright son!?” The old man worriedly asked as he checked my body and brushed off the remaining snow that I couldn’t do without help.

“Ah, yeah! Thanks for the warning... Sir”

“Ahh good, let me show you inside my home as a way to beg for my forgiveness”

“After all you must be cold right with those clothings?” He added and gripped my hand and forcefully dragged me through the shoe sized snow on the road.

Quest ObtainedFollow the old veteran soldier to his homeRank EUnknown Rewards

Eh? That was quick…A quest in this game is rare after all, not that I don’t mind… I smiled “Sir, I can walk myself, just show the way and I’ll follow”

“Ah, yes sorry…” He answered and let go of my hand and showed me inside the gates.

“Lets go then, shall we?” He smiled back to me, as I nodded in return.

“Whoa” A chilly feeling ran through my body in amazement as I stared at the gigantic fort that stood there at the top of a mountain and watched over the valley of the forest and the town within the walls, I couldn’t help but hope that one day I would have a fort like that.

“Awesome, isn’t it” The old man stood at my right side asked.

“Yeah… It is extraordinary”’

“Hah, that’s our pride as guardsmen” He said and patted my shoulder that caught my attention.

“My house is over there” He said and pointed to a medium wooden house fit for 4 people covered in snow at a far end corner behind a icy fountain with youths playing happily around it.

“Lets go!” He beckoned me happily and I followed him.

As I walked behind the old man through the snowy medieval town as the sun bathed it in glory whilst the female citizens walked around happily with baskets filled with groceries as they greeted soldiers standing guard. I noticed that a few high leveled players kept announced their sales from their stalls.

“Selling low level weapons & armor cheap!”

“Buy food here cheaply!”

“Selling materials cheaply!”

Huh? Looking at them I noticed that they were a bit too well equipped to be in a beginner zone. Are they trying to scam the penniless newbies? Meh… I shrugged without care and kept following the old man around the fountain covered in ice because of the cold, while children nearby played with the snow.

“Thud” Huh? Cleaning my cheek off the cold snow with my now icy cold hand, I then looked around the vicinity to find the culprit who threw the snowball.

Looking to the right as it came from that side, I saw a calm girl surrounded by bullies throwing their snowballs towards her but somehow missed that made a few hit my legs, which they somehow didn’t notice. As they did, they laughed though.

Oh no you don’t, quickly walking towards them burning with anger, I picked them up one by one and threw them into a hill of snow next to one of the houses as they helplessly tried to escape.

“Where is your pride as a man boys!? If you like her that much that you would tease her by doing this, at least do it alone”

One of the boys that I couldn’t catch though, started to stick his tongue out as he taunted “Shut up, fatass!” and ran away with the others who got out of their snow hills while laughing…

… I am not that big! I might weight 100 Kilos but my 1,8 meter height and trained body barely had any fat! Unless it was my stomach...

Sigh… Anyways, looking at the girl next to me that had clothings like the red little riding hood. I checked my inventory that was empty but had a few bronze coins.

20 Bronze

Taking out 10 of them, I crouched down and gave it to the shivering girl “Here, go buy some candies”

She nodded while looking sadly at the road.

Ah… Thinking about it, before I deleted my character, I also bullied the newbies together with a gang… So lame. “Cheer up girl, if they do it again, just fight back. Girls are stronger than you think against their counter gender” I said, reminded by my mother…

And just like that she cheered up. With a smile I made my way back towards the old man that was now smiling towards me because of the scene… Bingo! I thought with a evil grin. There is a second rule in this world for the players, look good and you will obtain the riches.

“Stomp” “Stomp” “Stomp” The old man stomped at wooden floor front of the entrance to remove the excess snow. Of course with respect I did the same. It would be bothersome if he questioned me about it.

“Welcome to my home” He said and gently opened the door that revealed a dark lounge room with a cheap couch and a chair at front of a dancing fireplace that illuminated the room.

As he did I felt a soothing warm breeze flow towards me from the room, Ahh… “Thanks kind sir”

“Come in and take a seat”

Walking inside the room with my poor shoes, I looked at the seats at front of me. One was a cheap couch but still expensive for a underclass in this world, while the other was a normal wooden chair. Heh, it’s a simple decision, of course I sit on the couch… Or I would have if I still had my badass rogue, but I sat on the chair instead.

Gazing upon the fire that kept the place warm I closed my eyes and relaxed on the chair as it blew away the cold from my body.

“Nice work out there, couldn’t have done it better” He said cheerfully as he gently sat on the couch next to me.

Heh, “Well she reminded me of my past”

“Oh, but I am afraid that I don’t want to step inside the private zone, so lets discuss about the reason why I brought you here” he said as he calmly gazed into the fireplace.

“Ah, my manners” He apologized suddenly and opened his inventory.

As I sat there curiously, he took out two cup of teas and gave one to me.

I reached out and grasped the tea that had a warm vapor rising from it. “Thanks” I afterwards said and sipped a bit from the tasty and relaxing tea.

While we bathed ourselves with the heat from the fireplace, the old man finally spoke up after a while.

“Anyways, the reason why I brought you to my home, Is because I am in dire need of an adventurer with a strong physique like you”

“Oh, what can I help you with?”

“Actually, It’s not only me, but the whole town is in need of wood from the forest”

I accidently flinched and spilled a bit of tea onto my cheap pants as I knew from my past character that a quest like this required a lot of time.

The old man looked confused at me of such an unexpected reaction, but quickly I turned his way and tried to change the atmosphere.

“Sorry, I don’t know If I can take such a big task if a whole towns need it”

“Ah, you will need not to worry, I will reward you greatly together with a set of warm clothing, long preserved food and a axe”

Quest continuationChop enough wood for the towns peopleRank ERewards at the start : Warmer clothings, food, axeRewards after : UnknownFailure : The town will lose their good opinion towards you

I took another sip from the tea and thought greedily about the Great rewards, even though this quest might take a month. Or rather, it will take at least a month…

It’s a trap, I can feel it. But I can’t miss the chance, besides think about the stat increase…

“Deal”

“Good! meet my son outside the gate and he will tell the details of your quest!” He said as he took out a steel axe, better clothings than my current and 5 pieces of bread.

Ah, the steel axe wasn’t as bad as I thought, actually I think that only those with over 36 strength could aquire this quest. Curses unbalanced stat allocation...

… Lets just hope that my endurance doesn’t ruin everything, I took another sip from the warm tea
