Core Chapter 1: Unfortunate Birth of a Core

It heard and saw two things when it first awoke.

One, a black box that had things on it which it couldn't understand yet, and second, a rushed squeaky voice sounding out in its thoughts.

"Cor---"

The rushed voice was cut off before it could even say its first word by the sound of cracking, followed by a loud rumble that ended in mere moments.

It was left in silence, wondering if that panicked voice would return. Still, that musing didn't hold its attention for long, as it instinctively felt the need for something called Mana. It sensed that it should have received some of this "Mana" by now, but for some reason, it hadn't, and it hungered.

It quickly searched as much as it could with what it instinctively knew was called Mana Sense. Its search, however, was for naught, as it couldn't find a scrap of Mana in its surroundings.

As time passed and hunger continued to gnaw away at its newly-born mind, it could feel what specks of intelligence it had, being consumed to preserve its existence for as long as possible.

It was becoming increasingly frustrated with its instincts, as they kept insisting that Mana should've already been provided by something linked to it called a "Pixie." Perhaps the voice it had heard was this so-called, "Pixie" but then, if that were the case, where had it gone?

It slowly lost track of how much time had passed since its birth, as it forgot what time even was. It only knew that it was ravenous, and frantic for any Mana it could assimilate.

Nonetheless, the only thing it could detect was the black box which continued to float before it with strange symbols flashing brightly.

It was steadily growing furious at the Pixie that should have been present, and at the black box for doing nothing to help with this abyssal yearning that was driving its wavering mind hysterical with hunger and fury!

Subsequently following what seemed to be an eon to its now feeble mind, it felt something moving and laying its hand on it.

The first thing that entered its mind, however, was not the sensation of being touched. No, it was the sensation of Mana!

It took hold of this Mana and devoured it from the being that was handling it; gorging itself with as much Mana as it could pull.

A shrill scream broke out as the being touching it tried to pull away unsuccessfully. Its screaming and struggling intensified as it fought to keep its Mana and its life.

Finally, the being's fighting ceased as its body went limp, sinking to the floor where it laid unmoving, never to rise again. Its very life drained out of it from the brief contact with the Stone laying on the pedestal that stood before its fallen corpse.

The Stone on the pedestal could now finally understand the black box that had been flashing brightly this whole time.

Two new black boxes appeared after it read the previous one, informing it of news which made it smug.

As it read these two boxes, it felt gratification at the first one as it remembered the screaming of the Pixie as its life was ripped from it.

The second one's Dungeon Effect confused it because it didn't know what Mana Leeches were. It understood from the title name that whatever it was could likely do what it had done to the Pixie, but it couldn't understand what selectable race meant.

So it bitterly turned to its instinct for an answer, and all it got was that it should open its Status for more information, so it did.
