Chapter 3: Spectrum

When I closed my eyes, I tried to imagine myself as a ghost outside of my body and watched myself floating from above. There I was, sitting all alone at my desk, diligently waiting for class to start. Then, in my new ghostly form, I saw my classmates talking and laughing with each other. However, they were also the same classmates that rejected my offer to become friends. Is this what it felt like to have no friends? If I had my pals back with me here from the empire, surely, I'd be doing that too... My mother told me it's normal since we just moved and that I just have to keep at it, but at this point, I'm honestly losing hope. After being told that I couldn't be friends with them because I was human, I think that flipped the switch in me and as a result of that, I'm thinking all sorts of gloomy thoughts.

As I contemplated my own hopeless situation, I yawned, stretched my arms out and was instinctively drawn to an empty desk behind me. If I remember right...her name was Jan, right? Was she absent today? I realized I haven't communicated with her other than the time I had to give way for her at the very first day of class. After that, I just couldn't bring myself to notice her or something. It's hard to describe.

She was isolated every time I saw her, plus, no one else seemed to approach her. Her level was low, even lower than mine, but that shouldn't be a reason for anyone to remain alone. Maybe she preferred it that way? Anyway, unless I got to know her better, it was rude to come to conclusions.

The bell rang and at the same instance, the door slammed open and a girl with two different sets of ears coming out from her head and a mini tail emerged. Woah, she managed to arrive at the exact time as always. Could that be a special skill of hers?

As if nothing happened, Jan casually walked to her desk. Noticing this, before she was able to take her sit, the teacher called her out. She wasn't technically late, but the teacher still scolded her and advised to come five minutes earlier, at least. Jan's response to that was a simple "okay" with a blank expression on her face as if she didn't care. She'd probably arrive again at the same time tomorrow...I couldn't help but chuckle to myself.

I didn't know the reason why I haven't tried talking to her these past few weeks, but...maybe, I'll try asking her after class was over.
