14 | The Sea’s Danger

“Hey! I’m Alex Lee! What’s your name?” Alex grinned. He tilts his head; his eyes glisten under the sun; his hair is orange cut into a fluffy buzzcut. “Nice to meet you, Miss—“ Riley interjects him. “I’m a man,” Riley ran his hand through his hair. Alex’s eyes widened as he took in the information. “Oh! Okay! It’s just that you… Never mind what I said! I heard your name is Riley!” Alex lets out a nervous chuckle. “It’s alright. Don't worry about it,” Riley said reassuringly. They continued to fall back on the group until they reached the portal.

“Okay, this is the B-Rank portal. Alex and Riley. Do not interfere

You will be protected,” Joshua stated as he crossed his arms. They entered the portal; their foot immediately touched grainy sand. Riley looked behind and saw a green tropical forest. The wind started to dance around them. Joshua takes out his spear while his partner takes out his staff. The sea began to ripple and crackle.

The ground beneath started to rip and tear. A vast amount of mana began to leak everywhere. The giant scaly serpent lunged at Joshua. Joshua rolled away. “Shit! What the hell?! This isn’t a B-Rank portal at all!” Joshua’s eyes widened. He looked behind and saw the portal’s hue slowly turning red. The sky split into different shards. Monsters started to pour from the crack. “Shit! It’s Bomboflies! Burn them!” Joshua commands the mage. “Alright!” The mage spins his staff before slamming the end stick on the ground. “[Fireeeeeeeeee Beaaaaaaammmmmm]!” The mage yelled out. The staff’s tip started to glow red.

Riley’s eyes widened; there were hordes of these Bomboflies. Joshua defends an attack from the sea serpent. Sparks and crackles fill the atmosphere; the sea serpent roars. Riley covers his ear along with Alex. Alex’s body falls on the floor. Beads of sweat roll down his forehead. “We’re so dead!” Alex’s eyes widened as tears rolled down his cheeks. Riley’s eyes pans over to the sky. The fire incinerates the Bomboflies. Dozens of corpses slowly fall to the ground before exploding into bits.

Bomboflies are large black flies with a yellow underbelly. The underbelly serves as an explosion, and when threatened, they’ll explode. Riley’s nose gets overwhelmed by the smell of smoke. Veins bulged at the mage’s neck, and he grits his teeth. “Joshua! I’m getting weaker by the second. I don’t know how long I can hold these flies back!” The [Fire Beam] slowly turns into a small string of fire. The flies explode, killing the other flies.

The sea serpent opens its mouth; a small blue orb forms inside it. It shoots out into blades of water. The mage aims his staff at the blades; the staff crackles fire until dispersing, but nothing. “NOOO—“ The mage’s eyes widened as the blades sliced through his flesh. The only thing standing was his legs. “TODD! NO!” Joshua’s eyes widened. He adverts his attention back to the sea serpent. Warm blood paints the sand like a canvas. “RILEY! ALEX! Be the meat shield! It’s our only chance of survival!” Joshua yells out as he tries to deflect the sea serpent’s attacks.

“O-okay!” Alex’s body trembled as he sauntered over to the sea serpent. “W-what now?” Alex looked to the right; Joshua was gone. His eyes widened as he saw Joshua booking to the portal, only to be stopped by a magic wall. Alex’s head slowly moves to the sea serpent’s gaze. His heart thumps wildly. The sea serpent’s mouth opened once again. A glowing blue orb forms; Alex’s body is frozen, and tears roll down his cheeks silently. Riley dives into Alex’s body. They roll on the floor; Joshua looks at the [Water Beam]. Joshua’s back hits the magic wall; his mouth opens before letting a silent scream. The [Water Beam] engulfs Joshua’s body. It clashes with the magic wall.

The water starts quaking; the sky crackles with ominous lightning. In the distance, various waterspouts shoot up to the sky. The water shifts and bubbles form at the surface. The sea serpent opened its mouth to fire another attack until it was swallowed. Water rains on Riley and Alex’s bodies.

The Leviathan lets out a screeching roar. Riley and Alex’s body gets sent towards the magical wall. The Leviathan placed its scaly arms on the shore, the shadow looming over Riley and Alex. Riley summons his sword and points it at Leviathan. The wall shatters due to the sheer power. “Run through the portal!” Riley grabbed Alex’s hand. They both dove through the portal before rolling on the… sand. “What the hell? We can’t go through it,” Riley’s eyes widened. “W-we’re dead…” Alex barely muttered. The Leviathan had green, scaly skin with four glowing, yellow eyes.

It had razor-sharp claws with a gray underbelly. The Leviathan opened its mouth before spurting dozens of watery bullets. Riley and Alex booked it to the tropical rainforest. The watery bullet pierced Riley’s shoulder. Riley fell on the sand as he rolled. “FUUCKKK—“ Riley’s hand trembles on the wound. Alex immediately goes to Riley before dragging him by the collar towards the tropical rainforest. The bullets pelts the sand, sending sand debris all over the air.

At the Hunter’s main headquarters. An alarm buzzed through the building. “President! President! There’s an emergency!” A man bursts through the room. The man fixes his crooked glasses. “Alright, let me go check,” the President ran his hand through his slick—white beard. He stood up and fixed his suit. He walked through the halls, bustling agents scattered across the hallways, and the alarm blares throughout the halls. The gray-haired man entered the control room. “Mr. Abelli! There are high amounts of mana circulating in this area! We suspect that it’s a S-Rank portal!”

Mr. Abelli leaned closer to the large screen. “This is horrible news. Dispatch Charlie Rutherford, Vincent Carter, Arthur Callahan, and Randall Hart,” Mr. Abdelli ordered. “Right away, Mr. Abdelli!” The lady starts sending a message to the S-Rankers. “It appears there’s a raid inside here! It used to be a B-Rank portal!” The lady said as she typed. “They’re probably dead,” Mr. Abdelli said coldly. His eyes narrowed on the screen. “Hm… Joshua Weston, Todd Miller, Alex Lee, and Riley Whitlock.”
