Chapter 11: Battle!

The morning was here, everything was going well.

Titus had just sent word that the traps were installed, they would just need a hunter to shoot them down at the right time.

The hunters were getting ready to leave and were awaiting the last instructions from their King.

"Remember! The goal is to survive. This is only the beginning of our story. It is pointless if you die! Shoot as many arrows as you can and then retreat to the prepared spots when the Kunalls charge! Remember to follow your leader, do not wander aimlessly in the forest!

Aim for their bodies and not their heads. The bigger the targets the more hit you'll get and the faster the poison will work! Our goal is to slow them down and bleed them to death!

Do not fear, they are merely bulls on two legs! What's the point of all their muscles if they can't reach you? Aim and shoot! And you'll fucking kill them all!"

"YEAH"! The hunters answered with fire in their eyes.

Chris was pleased with their reaction and continued: "This is revenge! Remember what the Kunalls did, remembers how tough your lives have been! Those scouts? They are nothing! Let's kill them, and the next ones as well, until there is not a single Kunall left in our territory!"

"KILL THEM ALL!" Everyone shouted!

"Now go! Our kingdom begins with our enemies' sacrifice!"

The troops were highly motivated. Chris' words were the truth. They had 200 archers with poisoned arrows ready to take on a small scout team. But more importantly... They could get revenge. How good would it feel? How proud would their families be?

So they moved into position very fast. Ferlin and Titus each took charge of one hunter team and sent words that they had found an appropriate spot for their ambush. They both had high ground, so Chris was very satisfied. This would make it harder for the Kunalls to reach them.

The Red Hornet's poison would weaken them every second. It had a strong blood letting effect after all. Chris speculated that it was a combination of an anti-coagulant and something that sped up heart beats. But Chris wasn't sure about that last one, as the poison also had a mild paralysis effect on muscles.

But climbing a hill in those conditions would be very hard, even for Kunalls.

Chris went to a high vantage point. His job motivating the soldiers was done, and he had no need to personally join the fray. After all he would only be a hindrance as he had no training with the bow and he was weak. But it was alright, his job was to lead not to fight.

With his small escort of two guards, he found a good spot with a clear view of the refugee camp and the road. All he had to do was wait.

After an hour, they finally received the signal from their own scout. The Kunalls were less than an hour away!

The hunters quickly busied themselves dipping the arrows in the poison. An hour might seem long but they had thousands of arrows to prepare.

And then the Kunalls were finally here. Chris knew they had big and though bodies, but this still went above all his expectations. If from his vantage point the hunters were regular ants, the Kunalls would be carpenter ants, they seemed at least three times bigger.

Luckily it all went down without an itch. Ferlin shot down the nets filled with Red Hornets. Once freed those hornets went mad and let all their frustrations out on the Kunalls.

The guards heard the shouts of pain and anger, the scout they sent found the Kunalls and fled back to the camp in panic. The Kunall noticed the scout fleeing and understood a human camp was nearby... But they still had to get rid of those gigantic hornets. The hornets could not kill them but the pain they caused was real.

Refugee Camp.

Mia and cat were listening to the scout's report. "Twenty Kunalls are coming this way my lady! They are currently fighting a group of hornets."

"Is our camp exposed?" Asked Mia.

"The Scout was ashamed."I believe so... They were already walking this way... " He suddenly knelt and shouted:"And they noticed me fleeing. I'm sorry!"

"It's alright, there is nothing we can do if they were already walking our way. This is a learning experience, remember it next time." Said Mia calmly.

"I will! Thank you my lady!" The scout bowed again and then left.

Mia looked at Cat: "Twenty Kunalls... Can we do it?"

Cat sighed and answered "Not a chance. One axe swing and a man will be claved in two. Twenty of them with no fortifications and our numbers? It's better if we flee."

"But how can we? Even if we discard all our possessions, we still need to pack food and medecine, we have children and elderly, how can we outrun the Kunalls?" Worried Mia.

"If we can't flee, but can't beat them by ourselves... How about your boyfriend?" Smiled Cat.

"Hm?" Mia didn't understand Cat, but then she thought of yesterday's meeting. "Cat! This is not the time!"

"Mia, think about it, a man and his two hundred men suddenly show up a day before a Kunall attack? He tells us where his camp is and that he is staying for a day or two? Could there be such a coincidence? Didn't you say it seemed as though he was 'inviting us'?" Said Cat seriously.

Mia's beautiful eyes seemed so bright right now: "You mean he knew about it and was 'inviting us' to ask for help! You are right! I would have done the same thing if I was in his position and wanted to recruit us!" she then paused , her cheeks gained a little hint of pink and she added "... not as shamelessly of course."

She turned to the tent's entrance and said loudly: "Guards! Send an urgent message to the hunter camp east of here! Explain the situation and ask for help! Hurry!"

A loud shout came from outside "Yes my Lady!"

The refugee camp sent a message to the hunter camp just like Chris hoped. The hunter's agreed to help, just like Mia knew they would.

The Kunalls finally came in view of the refugee camp, they could see the wood barricades and the soldiers standing behind them. They charged right away with a loud shout! The Red Hornet trap enraged them, it was too painful!

The soldiers gripped their swords and gulped hard... They had to fight against that?

When suddenly a rain of arrows appeared from the nearby forest.

The battle was on!
