Rebirth of the Last Demon
Fundamentals of Magic

Fundamentals of Magic

—Oh, young Prince…! It looks more elegant than yesterday and less than tomorrow! —said the maid when she opened the door.

“What a blatant lie. I look like a penguin in a tight dress suit.”

I remembered this girl's face, but not her name. But it was not the first time that she received my care, so Emilia seemed to trust her.

As we walked through one of the many corridors of the castle, she spoke to me in her jovial tone.

—The Queen has instructed me to prepare the room for your lesson with Lord Darian today —she said proudly. The servant opened a door and we entered—. I have heard, through some curious-eared birds, that you are already able to gasp the name of your father, the King. That's impressive, young Prince —she said while rearranging the curtains and struggling to move a heavy table around the room—. Being able to do such a feat is something you should be proud of. Especially considering the few months of your life. Although, well —she said, putting a brake on her adventures and looking at me—, we couldn't expect less from the queen's son either… Don't get me wrong! —she hastened to correct—. I really like King Lucien, but just like how Princess Aurora and Prince Maximilian got their great personality and intelligence from their dad, you and Princess Isidora got your intelligence and determination from his mom.

I haven't really gotten to know my brothers well yet. Up until now, I've only been able to see them from afar. Actually, saying that I was "allowed" to see them is an overstatement, because the only times I caught glimpses of them were when the servants weren't paying attention.

I did not understand the reason for this, nor did I see it as necessary. But like every human being, my curiosity was palpable, and I couldn't help but create theories about it.

It was better to keep potential ties separate if it was widely known that they were going to fight for the throne in the end. It makes sense, because from a parent's point of view, it was absurd to create a formal bond between children if it was ultimately going to be severed.

“But this theory doesn't make much sense, because I still vividly remember seeing them running towards my birthplace.”

It was true that it was a special day, but still…

Still, it looked like I wasn't going to need any more thought on the subject. Because the moment the door we walked through opened, I knew I had no idea.

—For the blessed love of all the gods! Princess Isidora, what are you doing here? It's still early morning, you shouldn't be here. You are aware that you are not allowed to see your siblings! —the maid said, confusing my mind.

—Do I have to ask permission to play in my own house?

Isidora's expression was one of complete indignation, and her tone emphasized the irony of the situation.

“A girl with a strong personality… How is she like her mother and me?”

—You know very well that you can go play anywhere else, but you decide to come here knowing the schedules of the young Prince! —said the servant, leaving what she was doing to approach the door and stand between her and me.

Before the maid occupied my field of vision, I was able to see my young sister. She seemed to be between five and seven years old, her golden hair was the same as Emilia's, but her eyes shone with the subtle green of my father, Lucien. She had cheekbones the same as Emilia's, which made her complexion very similar to hers. Her bushy eyebrows were curved, which told me that this look of disgust on her face was certainly common to her.

—Who cares what that brat does? He thinks he owns the world because Mom gives him two more kisses than the others…

The maid dropped her mouth in shock.

—Princess Isidora!

—Tsk… —Isidora completely ignored the maid's surprise and entered the room anyway—. [Consecrate Combustion].

As she walked to the huge fireplace in the room and spoke these words, a glowing flame burned next to the wood.

My mind didn't take more than two seconds to realize it.

“She has conjured a spell.........”

I was finally able to confirm my assumptions.

"I was right! There are really two methods. And seeing Isidora conjure so easily means that the verbal method is for beginners... But [Consecrate Combustion]. It seems to be a fire spell, although I don't know how it works yet, I think it is of a lower rank.”

Not only had I seen and heard about the spell, but also the spell seemed to contain offensive properties if used properly…

—If Queen Emilia doesn't find out that Princess Isidora is here, I don't think there will be a problem… —the servant bit her nails as she muttered to herself. Even though I knew that thought was wrong, she seemed unwilling to invoke my sister's moody side.

Speaking of my sister, after casting the spell and having the maid see it as an everyday thing, she came up to me. However, she took a seat at the other end of the sofa where my obese ass had been installed. Isidora seemed to be trying with all her might not to look my way.

We stayed like this for approximately twenty minutes until the maid finished tidying up the room.

—Huh, finally… Now —she said, lifting me off the couch and pulling me into her arms—, time for your second breakfast.

But when we took the first step out of the room, we could hear an annoyed sigh behind us. We both looked down and saw Isidora with crossed arms looking back at us.

—Lady Isidora… M-May I ask what are you doing? —inquired the servant, obviously anxious for the answer.

—What? Do I have to ask permission to have a second breakfast too?

And so, the three of us went to kitchen number six in the castle to prevent anyone else from seeing my sister and me together.

Still, I had to admit it. The nobility of this kingdom and their attitudes were insufferable. They complained about insignificant details, viewed the maids with disgust and treated them like objects, leaving much to be desired in all aspects.

However, for the royal daughter herself to be able to come to the servants' kitchen to eat; Isidora seemed a different girl from the rest.

When we got to the kitchen and the cooks saw us, most of them were petrified. Seeing them was like seeing statues. I could see the astonishment on the faces of most of the cooks, the surprise in them was such that I could hear how a plate was breaking and smell how something was burning.

—Clear the room, Prince Griffith and Princess Isidora are having breakfast here this morning.

Hearing the maid's order, the cooks rushed out of the kitchen like rats.

“That was fast…”

Oh, yeah. My name is Griffith, Griffith von Delacroix.

—Krista, dear! It's a pleasure to have you in these parts of the castle, he-he...... —said the man with the appearance of a goblin while he rubbed his hands together and smiled unpleasantly.

When he stopped pretending he hadn't seen us, he fell to his knees immediately.

—Very great and venerable, please, have mercy on the ignorance of this nameless common and spare his soul!

His body began to shake to the point where I almost believed he wasn't faking it.

—Raise your head, Eagor —Krista said, her voice muffled with scorn. Her eyes also had a disgusted gleam that I hadn't seen until now.

Isidora walked past him, ignoring his wailing with her hands clasped behind her back, and looking around the spacious kitchen.

—My s-lady… —Eagor said, stepping aside as Isidora passed—, I don't want to ruin the Prince's beautiful eyes by looking at my grotesque appearance…

—Ah, stop your filthy crying and get your head up before I order to cut it off.

I looked up to see Krista, the edge of her eyes was real, as real as that threat. When she realized that I was looking at her, her expression softened, and she smiled tenderly at me.

Eagor, with no choice but to obey, slowly raised his head as if weighed tons on him. His eyes were red from tears and his lips trembled with apparent fear. When he saw me, he bit his lower lip as he realized he couldn't lower his head again to avoid me.

—As your dirty eyes can see, the charming prince and the beautiful princess are together. Something that naturally is not allowed. Therefore, you are going to cook for them.

Eagor the Goblin didn't take long to get down to business when he knew he could get away from my presence. I didn't understand if he was afraid of me or Krista, but I didn't dislike being treated like that either…

As Isidora paced the room, Krista took a seat at the long marble tables and sat me on her lap; her thighs were large and her waist small, so I felt comfortable there.

The ingredients that I could see Eagor use and recognize consisted of potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes, everything else was not in my vocabulary and I did not know the taste of them. He cut them with mastery and experience worthy of a head chef, put everything into a huge cauldron, and with the help of a wooden stick hung it over a fire.

By the way, he had done all this using magic; the knife had levitated in the air to cut the vegetables, the fire had been ignited by the snap of his fingers, and the water had sprung from a sphere he had summoned. Of course, after each one of the spells, I could see how exhausted he was and how he forced himself to continue.

Isidora had finished her run when she noticed the first cut of the knife, she seemed to have a great interest in magic. However, between her and me, there was a different interest.

She probably didn't know many spells. It was possible that [Consecrata Combustio] was the only one she knew, which meant; learning magic was extremely complex or there was an age limit where your mastery of it improved on its own.

By the way, [Aqua Sphaera] was the chant to conjure the ball of water. I still had to figure out if he had manipulated gravity or telekinesis to make the knife levitate. He didn't cast the spell with a chant anyway, so it didn't matter for now.

On the other hand, I was beginning to think that maids were forbidden to use magic. Because if it was as simple and practical as Eagor the Goblin made it out to be, it didn't make sense for Krista to tidy up that big room with her bare hands and the sweat from her brow. They probably knew magic, but they were only allowed to use it in very special cases.

But if we discounted the servants, it seemed too strange to me that the manipulation of magic was so simple and clear. Everyone I'd met so far used magic to make their day-to-day life easier, and from what I could see today, even children were capable of manipulating it.

So if it was that easy in practice, now that I had obtained not just one, but two spells, I could start forging my way to becoming a true wizard.
