I awoke with a jolt, a cold swear dripping from my brow. I glanced around the room, my strangely unfamiliar room with a disgusting headache. I felt slimy in my head, a sense of phantom pain that just wouldn't go away. I walked towards the door when I started remembering things, not about the past... but the future. The shock had my stomach lurching as I brought my way down to the table. I glanced at my dad who had passed out drunk after another night out. Yet, instead of walking past him like I usually did, I stopped. I stared at him for a little bit, and whispered almost inaudibly "goodbye." I walked out the door, trying to remember how to walk. I felt a suprising amount of pressure on my body, and I felt the imbalance in it. As I continued walking, I slowly adjusted, planet readjustment was as natural to me as breathing.
I walked across the street when a small red car careened by, the driver was on his phone agitatingly talking to someone. However I was already prepared for what would happen next, he crashed into the nearby telephone pole, knocking it over. Haphazardly walking past it I remembered the day clearly, even the short walk to my college class was fraught with dangers. I paused in the middle of the sidewalk staring at the dusk sky. I could finally take back what I had lost, some sort of machinations had sent me back to the past.
I turned the corner and into my college class, all the chairs were pushed to the side, and inside the class were 23 shiny new capsules. Each one had a mark on it that I knew all too well. Three red squares that surrounded a purple circle, the symbol of the federation. Earth had managed to join the intergalactic federation and managed to get technology beyond it's comprehension. The cost however was beyond our control, we were simply told that everyone not inside of a capsule would be working in the mines to create more. Naturally they supplied us with millions of capsules, but only for people between the ages of 16 and 20, what appeared to the aliens as the prime of the human life span. Every person would eventually be outfitted with a capsule and sent to a cyberspace copy of the universe. Not that it mattered, what was important was that this universe was almost more lifelike than the current one. Some people lost in their delusions simply lived on in the phantom world.
The issue wasn't the cyberspace, but what happened next. Perhaps we were moved from one digital world to the next, but after we left the capsules earth was in flaming remains. All of us left on earth had to use the talents we had gained from within to become a super-power, some to save our relatives, some in pursuit of power. I started as simply a follower, yet as everyone fell around me, I slowly carried on their goals and ambitions. I will help the human race survive, I have to.
I quickly snapped out of my trance as a man wearing a black suit and dark sunglasses came in. He spoke out to the class in a domineering way, yet he was very charismatic. "You all will be seated in the capsules for a small test, after we get them calibrated you'll be able to come and go as you please."
I scoffed as he said that, almost subconciously, some people never excited the capsules, rotting away within. He seemed to notice my scoff as he walked up to me slowly, slightly smirking. "Why don't you be our first volunteer."
I simply smiled at him and walked towards the first open capsule. As I climbed inside he glanced at me. "Please remember to lie down in your most comfortable and natural position. After I gave him the go ahead he fiddled with some buttons as the lid closed, darkness engulfed the small room I was in, and I felt a sharp pain in my mind. I felt like I was rushing towards a bright white light, and all of a sudden I was in a large open field. The first time I arrived the shock I felt, I held it all inside of me. The reality of this world, is what took away from the other. There was one thing that shattered this illusion, Open UI.
