Today was the day. I was getting ready to start my new internship at a brand new A.I. research startup called ArtificialLife Inc. This was a huge deal because ever since I was 10, I’ve wanted to work with artificial intelligence. Some would say I have a tiny obsession considering that’s all I would spend my time researching and what prompted me to be a computer science major. As I approached the very modern looking building, like something that you would see in a science fiction movie, I couldn’t help but notice the absence of any other interns, as I was told this was a very competitive position with only 10 slots. I checked my watch to make sure I wasn’t late, even though I knew for sure I wasn’t. As expected, it showed 7:47. 13 minutes early. I continued into the lobby, that was also completely empty except for one lone receptionist. I could see she was trying to pull off her best forced smile. “Hello welcome to the ArtificialLife Inc. headquarters what can I help with?” she asked in a very welcoming voice that had a hint of annoyance in it. “I am here about the internship, I was told to arrive at 8:00 so I thought I’d get here a bit early, gotta make a good first impression.” I said with a chuckle as her welcoming smile immediately disappeared. “Name?” she said in a very monotone voice. Hmm that’s odd wonder what happened to all that enthusiasm. Maybe she mistook for a client and that’s why she was overly nice in the beginning. “Alex Smithson” I said in a very straight, to the point fashion. “Have a seat I’ll let Bob know you’re here”. I thanked her and as I took a seat in the dark blue chairs I couldn’t help but be curious if this was the Bob Grandy who started ArtificialLife. After about ten minutes of waiting, the secretary, who after glancing at here ID badge was named Sarah, let me know that Bob was ready and pointed me down one of the two hallways on each side. As I walked down the left hallway (my left btw) I felt my palms begin to perspire. As I approached the very obvious main office at the end of the hallway, I prepared myself to meet Bob Grandy. Just before I was about to knock I heard the rapsy voice of an older male say “Come on in.” As I entered, a man who appeared to be in his mid 50s with grey hair said “You must be Alex, Please please have a seat so I can get started explaining what your role here will be”. I studied him closely, he had a very obvious male pattern baldness and wearing a very noticeable luxury navy blue suite with a perfect maroon tie to match. As I started to take a seat I asked “I couldn’t help but notice where are all the ot…” That was all I was able to ask because as soon as my butt touched the chair I felt the sting of a needle poking me in the cheek before I immediately lost consciousness.
