Chapter 1 Wonder

A strange sensation filled my mind as I clawed my way forward. My vision was blurred, and I could hardly see more than a few inches. Whatever thoughts I may have had before this vanished and were replaced with wonder. What were these strange objects that were under my fingers? I reached out and cupped it and studied its surface. It was black and reflected something that was angry? I felt my face scrunch up as I tried to identify what it was, but my mind quickly wandered.

My gaze stretched upwards as I stared at what was so far away. It looked angry, and whatever it was, it gave me warmth, followed by a searing pain that burnt my eye. Maybe it was angry that I stared at it for too long. I shifted my gaze down and back to the ground and toward the strange objects.

I clenched the one in my hand, stared at it again, and marveled at its surface. This one was shiny. I think I’ll keep this one. I pushed myself up with a heavy heave and took a staggered step. I could feel my body twisting in strange ways. But I couldn’t seem to walk as I fell face-first into the ground. Sharp stings riddled my face, and I coughed as I breathed in a waft of dust.

But in the briefest of seconds, I saw something float across my vision. It felt blank, no, not blank; it was devoid of something. Something that I didn’t have a word for. But it felt softer than whatever it was high above me. I shifted my eyes to it and gazed at it, and slowly it came into focus.

I didn’t understand what I was reading. Instead, I felt what each thing meant. The first strange thing told me what I was called. It was an idea that was burned into my mind. Amaya. The words left my mouth in a harsh, raspy whisper. Amaya that is me. I glanced back at the strange things in front of me as more feelings pressed into my mind. It was something that I inherently knew. Everything here defined me. How strong I was, how fast I moved. Even how fast I could think. This was all so interesting. The thought alone stirred a feeling in my stomach. A desire to explore and to grow expanded in my chest and forced me to my feet.

Yet my gaze still lingered on the strangeness in front of me. There was something that I could do to strengthen myself. All I had to do was put something into it. As I gazed at the strange symbols, a meaning was pressed into my mind. I had points. These points equate to more strength in each field. But I didn’t know what to put them into. The first one would make me more alive? It was a strange thought since I couldn’t grasp the whole meaning. The second was the strength of my life, but again that was a confusing concept. The next set of strange runes made me feel powerful. It was almost as if it defined how strong my body was. The thought danced on my mind as I brought my claws up to my face. Was my body strong?

The sheer influx of emotion was enough to overwhelming for my mind, and I quickly pulled away. My head throbbed, yet I still desired more. Where was I? My eyes wandered from my claws and a whisper seemed to crawl across my mind, telling me how to summon it again. It was a word, much like my name. Menu. So its name was menu.

I felt a strange feeling grow in my chest. A creeping pleasure seemed to fill every fiber of my being. There was much to learn here, and I would learn it all. I pushed myself off of the ground and glanced around truly for the first time now that I could see. All around me were so many of those strangely shaped things, yet none seemed as shiny as the one in my hand. I pushed myself up and struggled to stare farther into the distance.

Wonder filled my body as I took in the sights. There were these large objects that seemed to reach high up, but not nearly as high as that enormous mass of anger. They were giant and looked like my claws. Above, even above them, were a bunch of objects that looked kind. Just enormous masses of soothing colorlessness that seemed to drift.

I took a tentative step forward and felt all the small objects under my feet crunch, followed by small jabs of pain that bit into my foot. Well, at least what I thought was pain, but it felt good. I took another step forward as I tried to find my balance. All it took was another to find my balance. The sound of the ground crunchy under my feet filled the air, and something pressed against the flesh of my face. It was soft, calm, and chased away the warmth from the angry thing above me.

But it also pressed something unfamiliar into my nose. It was a dry smell, and it was gritty, perhaps? The right word eluded me, but it felt like it was the right one. But that didn’t matter. I was excited to explore. I pressed onward as I found my footing. The ground shifted under my feet as I pushed onwards.

Eventually, I came to a strange piece of ground after traveling for quite a while. It was covered in something soft that grew up to my ankles. It spread as far as the eye could see and bent to whatever force was pressing against my flesh. I stopped moving, squatted down with my shiny in my hand, and reached out toward the strands of strangeness. I didn’t know their color, but it made me feel tranquil.

I reached out and plucked a single strand of the strange object. My clawed fingers easily cut through it. I brought it up to my nose and gave it a tentative sniff. A strange smell graced my nose. It was strange, but it was very good. It made me feel alive, and even euphoria sparked in my chest as I inhaled the pleasant scent. In a few short heartbeats, I decided what I would do. I wanted to explore this world and learn the names of everything. I wanted to find the pleasures of this world and relish them, for that would be my purpose. I stood up, dropped the strand of grass, and gazed at the land before me. There were more strange objects here, and I was curious about what lay inside. I felt a twisted grin cross my face as I gripped my shiny and started my journey into this strange new world.
