Shiro looked at the black haired guard, and asked, “So who is that?”
“Our dad obviously.”
“Hmmm, well I figured as much”
Nayer stabbed the large war glaive into the ground and opened his arms wide. He repeated himself, “Daddy’s here kids!”
Kuro asked, “You aren’t going to do anything Haiiro?”
“Just give it a minute~.”
Nayer laughed wearily and repeated once more, “Come on kids, Daddy’s here!”
But Haiiro just sat there motionless. Nayer laughed sadly, his black ears drooping down. The wolf beside him growled and leaped towards him, its sharp fangs gleaming in the light. Just as it was about to crush it between its powerful jaws, Nayer swiftly grabbed the war glaive next to him and sliced the wolf in two in a single motion.
“Kids….come on, you’re making Daddy feel lonely.”
Haiiro laughed, “He’s quite adorable every now and then~.”
“Adorable, huh…” Shiro looked on at the bloody scene before him. In a matter of minutes the guards had annihilated a small group of wolves, not only instantly killing a few of them, but even completely splitting one in two.
“We really aren’t Human…”
Haiiro laughed, “Of course not~.”
Kuro walked up to Haiiro and asked, “When we grow up will we get that strong? Please say yes, please!”
“Of course we’ll be that strong, just give it a few years. I bet we'll be invincible...Eventually!”
Shiro commented, “But you know I’m surprised. Those guards seemed rather useless earlier. To think they’d be that strong.”
“Yeah,” Kuro added, “You really can’t judge a book by its cover.”
...
There was a loud rustling came from behind the group, and out came a large group of guards led by the old man who caught one of the rabbitkin girls in the beginning. The gray-haired man turned around and saluted him, “Captain!”
“Well done, Christopher. Men! Sweep the perimeter, kill any wolf you come across. Prioritize the children above all else.”
The men behind him replied, ““Yes Sir!””
The guards quickly spread out, standing at the ready. Several wolves charged into the group of guards, having smelled the blood of their brethren.
The captain commanded, “Kill them all! Protect the children!”
The men cheered, “OOOHHHHH!”
The dozen or so guards grouped up and stabbed at the approaching wolves with their spears while Nayer and the gray-haired man from earlier charged forward, taking down several wolves by themselves.
The battle raged on, and around half of the guards incurred heavy wounds, with only a few fatally wounded. But nonetheless, they managed to drive the wolves away.
“Christopher, Nayer, carry the wounded back to town with the children! I shall lead a team to find the others! Those not wounded or lightly wounded come with me!”
The captain drew his sword and led a small group of four guards along with him. Nayed looked around and said ,”Well I guess that wraps everything up. Chris, if you’d do the honors.”
Christopher sighed, “Lazy bum, whatever. Okay, those who can still move pair up and carry the fatally wounded. We need to hurry back!”
Suddenly a female voice called out from behind him, “Honey!”
A young cat-kin woman ran out of the forest into the open clearing. She was in a bright blue robe and held a large wooden staff in her hands. She raised her staff, causing several balls of light to fly out towards the most severely wounded.
Nayer turned around and opened his arms excitedly, “Sweetie!”
But just as he ran forward to accept her embrace, the woman swung her wooden staff and smacked him in the face. She raised her staff, causing her feet to light up with a bright blue light, and jumped forward with an increase of speed, ignoring the pitiful man on the ground.
She landed before Haiiro, and asked, “Sweetie, are you okay?”
Kuro looked at her and exclaimed, “Eh, our mom!”
Haiiro smiled innocently, “Mom, I’m fine but brother…”
Haiiro turned his head and stared at Kasuka. Their mother’s eyes widened, and she immediately began casting a spell. A large quantity of light began to gather at the tip of her staff before shooting off and coating Kasuka’s entire body in a thin film.
She pulled out a small red bottle from a pouch on her side and popped open the cap. Using a spell, she extracted the red liquid from inside and allowed Kasuka to slowly consume it.
She put her hand on Kasuka’s chest and finally breathed a sigh of relief. Nayer walked up to her, and asked, “What was that for, Mara?”
Mara turned around, and smiled sweetly, “Honey, you were on duty today, correct?”
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
“Why, of course. That’s how I got here so fast.”
“Then, Nayer dear, do you care to explain how our cute children almost lost their lives while you were on duty?”
“Ah, well they snuck past us, and the captain called us to chase after them. It was only after he heard the wolves that he-”
“And how did they get past you?”
“Uh, well I was busy-”
Haiiro butted in, “Talking with one of the pretty ladies.”
“Ah, huh? Yuya?”, Nayer turned his head to his peculiar smiling four-year-old son in a torn up dress.
Mara turned around and patted Haiiro’s head, “Yuya, you’re such a good boy. Now sweetie, follow those sweet uncles over there with your brother. Okay?”
“Mhmm.”
Mara turned to Nayer, “Now, DEAR~ We need to talk. Alone. Now.”
“Uh, darling, sweetie, honey… we’re in the middle of the forest. You can’t do this now. What about the wolves?”
A large pillar of fire rose up from the distance, sending a large number of wolves flying into the air behind Mara. “What about the wolves?”
Their father’s face paled, and he turned to run. Before he took a single step, their mother had caught him by the ear and started to drag him away.
Nayer turned around, and screamed,“Chris! Jack! Al!””
The other guards looked on in pity. They clasped their hands together and closed their eyes. In their hearts they prayed, Rest in peace old friend.
“Oh, I nearly forgot,” Mara paused and threw the pouch on her side to Christopher, “Ointment for the lightly injured, cream for the heavily injured, and potions for the fatally injured.”
Mara dragged Nayer past the trees, and everyone turned a blind eye to the screams that followed. Christopher and the rest of the guards hurried the injured back to the village. Kasuka and Kuri were left at the village doctor’s house, while the rest of the guards were sent home.
And in the end, Nayer and Mara came home along with the captain and three others. When the village came out to welcome them back, they were shocked to find the Captain had not only lost an arm but was also heavily wounded and missing an eye.
It was only thanks to Mara’s constant healing that the Captain even managed to survive. Everyone worked desperately to keep the old man alive, and only after a full night of healing was he finally stabilized.
Early in the morning, he gathered everyone in the village and explained, “Something troublesome is brewing up north. This pack of wolves is far too abnormal, they’re not only comprised of Dark Flame Wolves, but also Hellfire Hounds. Two species that shouldn’t be good terms with each other have arrived at the exact same time.”
A villager exclaimed, “But that’s impossible, both of them are extremely prideful and territorial. They’re not smart enough to put down their pride and work together.”
“I never said they were. But whether or not they’re working together isn’t the problem. All we need is a B-Class Subjugation Group and we’ll have dealt with them. However, the very fact that they’re here means something has driven them out of their native grounds. And whatever it is will more than likely drive several other species out as well. We need to be prepared.”
The village elder, an old white-haired catkin, stood up and said, “From now on children are absolutely forbidden from entering the Northern forest. And hunters that wish to hunt there may no longer go alone. This is an order of the utmost priority. We’ve lost too many lives today.”
...
Within the Northern Forests, two kids weaved to and fro through the trees. One was a young black haired catkin male only about thirteen years old, holding a wooden bow and carrying a leather quiver filled with arrows.
Following behind him was a young catkin child only ten years old. In his hands were two stone daggers sharpened to a point. He wore shorts, and a brown leather shirt. He appeared quite androgynous, at times looking like a young boy and at times appearing much more feminine like a girl.
The boy in front paused, raising his hand to signal the child behind him to stop. He turned around and said, “Yuya, I see something up ahead. Hmm, Yuya?”
Inside the pitch black room inside Yuya’s head, were three featureless beings. The black figure was excitedly telling a story, “So I was like, no way! But it was so amazing.”
The gray figure muttered, “Or so we’ve heard.”
The white figure commented, “For the thousandth time, pay attention, Kuro. Or are we gonna have to make you switch?”
