Maybell is an all-human woman struggling with feelings of worthlessness in a world where her friends and lovers are genetically modified freaks. She currently lives on Mu-Beta-Prime—a moon so dank and dismal that its inhabitants must hide underground whenever they emerge from the shadow of their gas giant mother-planet. If they didn't, their sun would roast them with cosmic radiation.

Fortunately, their mother-planet glows with a dim light all its own, letting everyone see how awful Mu-Beta-Prime really is. Two things brighten this mudball moon on the far-flung frontier of space—one is a redhead named Maybell, and her red monocycle. The other is the bull-rex, a breed of animal bioengineered specifically to thrive on Mu-Beta-Prime. They started out looking more or less like rabbits, but soon grew to be the size of bulls.
Bioengineering is queer like that.
