Ch 1.3: Paths Cross, Pieces Coming into Play (III)

“Has your oldest son contacted either of you?” Detective Grey asked.

“No.”

“He didn’t? Why didn’t you report him missing then?”

“He doesn’t have the balls to. The moment the court hears he lost our son, they most likely will shift custody of the children to me,” Mrs. Lee said.

“Mr. Hong, does your son have any friends or girlfriends that you know of?”

“No. Every time I see him, he’s usually in his room gaming. How the hell would he know any girls?”

Detective Grey nodded at Justine who turned her laptop around.

“Mr. Hong, Mrs. Lee is this your son?” Detective Grey asked while showing security footage of a man harassing a woman.

"Who the hell is this guy? Why the heck is he beating up Harry?” Mrs. Lee asked her ex-husband.

“How the fuck should I know?” Mr. Hong replied.

Detective Grey brought out a newspaper and showed the headlines to them both.

"That girl… isn’t she the one who was with Harry? She’s dead?” Mrs. Lee asked shocked.

“Yes. Her name was Yumi.”

“Our son didn’t kill the girl. He’s a good kid,” Mr. Hong said.

“Relax, we aren’t accusing your son of anything. We just want to bring him in for questioning.” Detective Grey said.

“My son would never do anything like this.”

“Again, we just want to bring your son in for questioning. If we find out he didn’t do it, there’s a chance that the person who did is after him as well. Let us know if he contacts either of you.”

“Ok.”

Mr. Hong and Mrs. Lee got in a taxi and rode home in silence.

“Thank you, Dr. Ma, for taking care of our son.”

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

“No problem.”

“Did anyone call while I was gone?”

“No.”

“Damn. That oldest son of mine got himself into a lot of trouble.”

"… Jeremy, let’s go home. You can come by and visit whenever you want—provided you are invited.”

"Ok.”

Dr. Ma drove Jeremy and Mrs. Lee back to their own respective homes. When Jeremy got home, he remembered he had forgotten his rubrics cube at Mr. Hong’s apartment and went back. He returned and found Eric absorbed in trying to solve the problem and not willing to give it back. In an effort to get his cube back, Jeremy brought up a physics problem—how Dr. Ma was able to do donuts with his car—and told Eric that if he is able to solve it, he will be the winner.

The next day, Dr. Ma got a call from Mr. Hong asking him to help him track down his son. They went to the club where they obtained security footage of that night.

After watching the entire video, Dr. Ma said, “The guy who punched your son isn’t the girl’s killer.”

“What why? Look at him. He punched my son.”

“He can’t be the killer because she clearly didn’t want to be with your son. You see, when the guy brought the girl away, she didn’t object or protest. She didn’t even look back to see if your son is okay, which means she willingly left with the guy. Based off this analysis, it seems the one with the problem is Harry.”

Meanwhile, Detective Grey and his team apprehended Harry’s assaulter and discovered the same information—he only came to protect Yumi from her stalker. Furthermore, the coroner’s report had come out affirming Detective Grey’s suspicions. Yumi had been beaten then strangled to death at around 4 a.m. They analyzed Yumi’s phone records and discovered Harry had called her at least once everyday. Her internet records showed the same thing—she was chatting with Harry nonstop.

Detective Grey and his team came to the conclusion that Harry must’ve been pissed that she left with another guy and stalked the two of them until Yumi was finally alone; the moment that happened, he killed her.

They filed for a search warrant to seize and search through all of Harry’s belongings.

When Dr. Ma came to the conclusion that Harry was the one with issues, he called Jeremy asking him to go to Mr. Hong’s apartment and back up all the data on Harry’s laptop before the police arrived and not tell them anything.

When Jeremy finished backing up Harry’s laptop, he heard a noise.

“POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR!”

Jeremy opened the door and was confronted by Detective Grey and his team. They showed him the warrant and began moving things out of Mr. Hong’s apartment.

“Why are you taking stuff out of my apartment?” Mr. Hong asked when he got home.

“We have a search warrant and we are taking all of your son’s things for analysis. He is now our primary murder suspect.”

“You’re wrong. My son would never kill anyone!” Mr. Hong cried.

“If you care for your son, you will call the police the moment he contacts you,” Detective Grey said and he left.

“Jeremy, I hope you managed to back up Harry’s computer before they took everything away.”

“Yep.”

“I’m counting on you to help find any clues to where Harry is.”

“Okay.”
