Ch 1.2: Paths Cross, Pieces Coming Into Play (II)

“Dr. Ma! Dr. Ma! Let’s skip the meeting and focus on you telling me how you managed to pull off that stunt last night. I was up all night trying to work out the physics, only to find that the math did not work out. I can’t figure out how you were able to do doughnuts with your car,” Jeremy asked the moment he stepped into Dr. Ma’s office.

“Sorry Jeremy, I have other appointments today. I can’t just cancel them just to teach you how to do doughnuts with your car,” Dr. Ma casually replied. “Now let’s pick up where we left off from the last meeting. When I have time, I will teach you.”

An hour later, the meeting concluded.

“Remember your promise! Teach me how to do doughnuts next time.”

“Haha, we will see,” Dr. Ma said before turning his attention to his receptionist.“Allison, can you schedule an appointment for Jeremy for next time?”

"Mhm. Oh and Dr. Ma, Mrs. Lee is here to see you.”

“Dr. Ma,” Mrs. Lee said as she stood up.

“Mrs. Lee?” Dr. Ma asked.

"Sorry for dropping in unannounced, but I need to talk to you about something.”

“Seriously, Dr. Ma you need to tell me how you did it. Given your car’s horsepo---“ Jeremy butted in.

“Let’s talk again next time, Jeremy. Mrs. Lee, let’s have this conversation in my office.”

“Sorry for disappearing a few months ago, Dr. Ma. I got remarried and didn’t want my new husband to be worried about my mental health.”

“It’s okay. Congratulations on your new marriage! What did you want to talk about?”

“Dr. Ma, as you know I had two kids from my previous marriage. Now that my life is stable, I need your help in regaining custody.”

“I remember. Sorry, I couldn’t help you gain custody of your kids then.”

“It wasn’t your fault. My ex-husband was not willing to see you.”

“From your current visit, I take it your ex-husband still gets angry at any little thing?”

"Yes, which is why I’m here again for your help.”

Mrs. Lee brought Dr. Ma to her ex-husband’s store; where they observed Mr. Hong berating their younger son for being too lazy and not helping out with the store.

“Stop it! Can’t you see our son is doing his best?” Mrs. Lee shouted at her ex-husband.

“Mr. Hong, you are scaring your son. If you want to teach him a lesson, use a softer, more patient tone.”

“Who are you?” Mr. Hong asked.

“He’s Dr. Ma, whom you should know from before,” Mrs. Lee replied.

“Oh, that crackpot doctor? I don’t believe anything he says. People get angry all the time and he doesn’t say they have issues,” Mr. Hong shouted while brandishing a butcher’s knife.

“Calm down, Mr. Hong. I’m not saying you have any problems at all, but the fact that you have problems controlling your anger might lead to an inability to get along with others, much less your sons.”

"Total bullshit! Everyone around me likes me. You’re making up shit to help that bitch wrestle back custody of the kids from me!”

“You see, Dr. Ma! Please write a letter telling about what you have seen today and send it to the court!” Mrs. Lee cried.

“Relax, both of you. Relocation of a child can carry risks. Let me meet with your son over the next few days and get a grasp of his situation.”

In the meantime, a bottle collector called the police when she discovered the deceased body of a prostitute in the dumpsters. Detective Grey and his team were first on the crime scene.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

"Police at work. Please make way!” his team shouted as they walked towards the crime scene.

“Erica, get the bottle collector’s statement. Jonathan, Lina, and Daniel check the surroundings for clues. Justine, you’re with me. We are going to find out who the deceased person is,” Detective Grey ordered.

“Sir, the deceased name is Holly. Judging by the bruising, she was strangled first, then clubbed to death,” Justine reported.

“Hm… It doesn’t seem to be a robbery or a rape considering the deceased still has her jewelry and her clothes are in place. Her heels looked like she was dragged from some other place and then placed here. Maybe the murderer killed her and then disposed of her body here,” Detective Grey wondered aloud.

"Contact her cell phone carrier to find out where she went in her final hours.”

Dr. Ma left Mr. Hong’s store and headed directly back to the penitentiary where he was turned away because Adrian’s condition had taken a turn for the worse. Adrian had become delusional and unresponsive and refused to meet with anyone.

Upon being told this, Dr. Ma went home and lounged in his office smoking a cigarette.

"Jessica, I had a meeting scheduled with Adrian today, but it didn’t happen because his condition was still unstable and has been since our meeting. I wonder when’s the next time I will be able to meet with him.”

“Are you feeling guilty over what you did?”

“No, everything I did had a purpose. I made him angry to test whether or not he harbored murderous feelings in his heart. My assessment has proved he does not. I knew his mental condition would worsen, but I didn’t expect him to become this unhinged.”

“You still don’t think that you came across as too impatient, too eager for an answer?”

“You know me. When I’m determined to do something, I will do it, regardless of the consequences. Maybe my methods were a bit too ruthless, but I wanted to try.”

“Then do you think the personality you have is good or bad?”

“Good or bad, nobody knows. I feel that I don’t need to change.”

"I guess you don’t really need my analysis at all.”

“I know what I want and until I get the truth, I will not give up. Therefore, I must find a way to meet with Adrian once more.”

The next day, Dr. Ma drove to his office. He parked his car and attempted to get out, when his passenger side door opened and Jeremy sat inside.

“You’re appointment time isn’t for a while, Jeremy.”

“I already sent the data from your stunt to my online friends and none of them are able to figure out how you managed to do it.”

"I already said that I would teach you next time.”

“I have a hunch that if you demonstrate doing a doughnut one more time, I will be able to understand your trick. Let’s drive.”

"Now?”

“Yes.”

“Sorry Jeremy, I have an appointment right now. You’re welcome to come up and stay in my office until your appointment time.”

Dr. Ma and Jeremy got out of the car and went up to Dr. Ma’s office, where Mrs. Lee was sitting in the waiting room talking on the phone with her ex-husband while watching her son play with rocks.

“I know, George. I didn’t take Eric away. He came to me yesterday! Do you know his sudden presence turned my household upside down? He even cursed at my husband. I only brought him to see Dr. Ma to find out whether or not our son has ADHD. I will bring him back right after… Why are you calling me crazy? Me taking him to see a psychologist means I’m crazy?”

She hung up the phone when Dr. Ma walked through the door. Meanwhile, Jeremy observed Eric and headed to the table.

“Give me a second to put my things in my office, Mrs. Lee.”

“Okay.”

After setting down his things, Dr. Ma walked out of his office and observed Jeremy and Eric placing black and white stones on the table.

Mrs. Lee stood up and walked over to Dr. Ma and said, “Thanks again, Dr. Ma for seeing me on short notice. Eric stop playing and come here.”

“No problem. Mrs. Lee, let him play.”

They stood there watching Eric and Jeremy place stones on the table for some time.

“Mrs. Lee, I don’t think your son has ADHD; rather, he might be a genius. Can we consult with your ex-husband?”

“Fine.”

Dr. Ma drove Mrs. Lee, Eric, and Jeremy over to Mr. Hong’s house where he presented Mr. Hong with the news that his son has a high IQ.

“Are you sure, Dr. Ma?” he asked.

“Yes, when they were at my office earlier, I observed him using the stones in my office as Go pieces.”

“So playing Go means that he has a high IQ?”

“The person playing with Eric is named Jeremy. He has an IQ of 175.”

The room fell silent as both Mrs. Lee and Mr. Hong digested the information. Suddenly, Eric shouted out, “Yes! I win. I beat you in chess.”

To which Jeremy replied, “We are playing best of 7 games. Right now the score is 3 to 3. You have not won yet. Perhaps, I will win the next game.”

“Bring it!”

“So Dr. Ma, because my son just beat a person with IQ of 175, does this mean his IQ is over 180?”

“I don’t know. I will have to test him, but to do that I must get your permission.”

“Yes, let’s do it. Eric has my best genes so it should be no problem,” Mr. Hong said smiling.

“If he is anything like you, it would be a disaster,” Mrs. Lee cursed.

Mr. Hong opened his mouth to refute, when suddenly the doorbell rang. He got up and opened the door.

“Hello?”

“Police.”

“What are you here for, sir?”

“We are looking for Harry Hong who is under suspicion for murder. My name is Detective Grey.”

“Sir, did you guys mess up? I don’t believe my son could do such thing,” Mr. Hong said.

“We only want to bring your son in for questioning. Are you two his parents?”

“Yes.”

“Is he in?”

“No.”

“Do you know where he is?”

“No. He’s an adult. I don’t know where he goes.”

“Well then, since you two are his parents can you come down to the station and give your statements?”

“I have to take care of my son,” Mr. Hong said.

“Don’t worry, Mr. Hong. I will bring your son over to my office and have my receptionist watch over him, while you two are giving your statements to the police.”

“Very well then…”
