Chapter 6 - Theory

The human was quite heavy in my arms, leaving me with the option to either drag his limp body across the ground, or run as fast as I could with him on my back. As much as I wanted to run his face through the dirt, there was the chance it might wake him, and any more time spent trying to subdue him would be a waste. The other human had gone to fetch reinforcements after all.

Transporting a creature nearly as heavy as yourself while fatigued proved challenging, but not impossible. The promise of answers and a chance to test a long-held theory made pushing through the exhaustion a trivial matter. I broke off into a sprint once he was onto my back, moving as far as my legs could carry me. The pacing eventually slowed as I tired, but it never came to a stop. There was a time I caught him groaning and waking up, but a good sock to the head with the good ol’ rock did the trick. Even with the weariness and my thin arms, the half conscious human already injured was knocked out immediately.

After a half hour, or at least what felt like one, I stopped and laid him out on the ground before me. We were in a small clearing near a few bushes, all filled with the round and bumpy appendages I consumed yesterday. It wasn't the best, but given that I couldn't carry him up a tree, an area to ourselves with food for myself was good enough for now. I couldn't have the humans interrupting my interrogation after all.

Still, there was something I had to confirm before waking him. The intense yearning for motherhood had resurfaced upon my acquisition of a human male, and I was confident my hypothesis would prove true. The scientists, being cautious, seldom ventured into self-analysis as potential reproductive partners. After all, who would attempt to mate with a being that could bite their head off if left unrestrained? It was always monster and monster, never monster and human.

Somehow, I just knew what to do….and at the same time, I didn't. The professors called the familiar and demanding feeling instinct.

Squatting with my back turned to the bushes for some semblance of privacy, I allowed my body to follow its natural course. Reflecting on the experience, my abdomen extended as I sensed something emerging. Small clusters of small, round beads were released, covered in a yellow fluid. Eggs. Contrary to my expectations, quantity was emphasized for more than quality despite my chimeric origins. Each egg was no bigger than a human fist, but I counted twenty. Twenty potential children of my own. Now was the question of how to fertilize them using this human.

My Conclusion: Human phalluses are weird.

After an odd hour or so of fumbling around with the human’s body, I think I got what I needed. Covering my eggs in the sticky liquid was easy, but initial extraction proved difficult. It took far more effort than I thought, although it was even more surprising that the human slept through all my touching. With that said, it was deep into the night, and the symphony of sounds had returned, though it remained distant from my location as usual. Not that I was bothered, considering my sole focus was on safeguarding both my eggs and the human from any potential threats. He was laid bare and naked on the ground, sleeping rather soundly for someone in his position. I was going to have so much fun breaking him.

Frank POV

Laughter. Lots and lots of womanly laughter. The slew of voices cut through the silence in my upstairs study, waking me from my slumber. Alissa must have the ladies over again. I concluded, reorganizing the wooden desk I fell asleep on. By now it had become a habit for my wife to bring in visitors for a cup or tea or chat as she liked. She had always been more social than I, and ever since junior enrolled in school she longed for company during the long hours I stood guard at the gates. It wasn't a necessary job given how secluded the village was from the outside world, but the chief's words were final. I did argue against his decision however, resulting in some company while I stood watch.

Albert wasn't the brightest kid around, but he was reliable despite his dislike for the villlage's culture. He proved to be a wise selection due to his aptitude with a sword, and he was decent company, attentively listening to my numerous stories from my youth. At least he did a good job of making it look like he did. It didn't matter to me though, just someone to talk to was enough. Things were slow and peaceful out here, and I liked it that way.

However, amidst my nostalgic reflections, the resurgence of memories turned the situation from serene to horrifying in an instant. Was I supposed to be in my home? Wasn't I out on the job, fighting against that grotesque monster? Did I not lose? Or….Or was it all just a dream? A nightmare that went on for far longer than it needed to. Yet I couldn't shake the feeling of dread that loomed over me.

I needed to talk to Alissa. She would be able to console me. She always had been able to console me. I'm sure her lady friends could spare a bit of time for me.

I nearly hopped out of my chair in haste, ready to take the first step before my right leg gave way underneath my weight causing me to fall flat on the hard floor. Had I injured myself somehow? Was it broken? Questions floated around in my head, but a burning pain in my leg caught my attention, the intensity seeming to grow by the second. It hurt far more than it should, and I was having trouble holding back tears. I wanted to scream in pain….and I did.

The Extent of the Supernatural in the World of Ninety-Seven

The paranormal abilities and energies that populate the world of Ninety-Seven are numerous in application and source, but they can be separated into 2 main categories: Ki and the purely supernatural. Both unique in their own way. This chapter will touch on Ki.

Ki

Ki is a force present in all forms of organic life. It is the energy that enables mortals to do the physically impossible, allowing them to jump dozens of feet in the air, hide their presence, or even channel this very same energy to strengthen their weapon. It is energy derived from the soul, and it depends exclusively on the fusion of body and spirit. But even though Ki is present in all living organisms, not everyone is fully aware of it. Only those able to sense their own energy and awaken it can control these unbelievable abilities.
