Chapter 48 - Preparations

Chapter 48 - Preparations

"Can you reattach the limb?" Owen asked hopefully, but Peggy shook her head. "I don't know if there is a healing skill out there that can reattach it. Maybe if my healing skill was a higher level." "More than likely I'll have to grow the limb from scratch." Myra mumbled, still looking like she was unconscious. "You're awake?" Owen asked, feeling his spirits rise. "Yeah, you need to get better at carrying me, the princess carry was nice, but I think a piggy back ride would've been better." Myra said as she gradually opened her eyes, flinching back from the sudden light.

Owen smiled, "Well, I am sorry your highness, but only pigs get piggy back rides, and I was very beaten up as well." He pretended to be hurt for a moment, but just then the peanut gallery just had to chime in. "So, does that make Myra your princess?" Peggy asked coyly. Owen was about to scowl and deny it, but he saw Myra blushing, while trying to turn her face away to make it not as visible.

"Well, I suppose it was a princess carry," he said thoughtfully, before grinning sheepishly. "Sadly, to get slightly more serious, all of us should have gotten almost ten thousand credit in total from the 2 gates." Peggy nodded as her face grew more serious. "I am going to set up the tax system to automatically transfer that amount to me. I am only going to take Myra's and Lucas's share, Myra's because duh its her guild, but I am also taking from Lucas since I don't trust him." Peggy said and Myra nodded her agreement.

Owen couldn't argue. Lucas had seemed like an alright person when he first met him, but thinking back, there were very few instances he had ever actively helped unless his life was at risk. Even then, it was for only as long as it took for Myra or himself to charge back in. Myra then retold her experience with him in the gate and how he had just seemed weird. Drastically changing whenever Owen was nearby. Owen didn't even try to hold back a laugh when she described it as a child trying to act cool around their friends, while doing something they weren't supposed to, only for their parents to walk around the corner.

Peggy shared a couple odd stories as well, where for a while it had seemed like he was trying to flirt, but couldn't stop bragging for long enough to actually say anything flirtatious. Owen felt more and more uncomfortable with having introduced Lucas into their group and decided he was going to need to have a conversation with him now, or they would need to kick him to the curb, at least until the battle was finished.

"I guess there is no time like the present to go talk to him," Owen sighed as he slowly got up and stretched. "I'm going to go settle things with him before anything serious picks up. I have to pick a new skill then and I'm going to come back here and we will have to see if there is anything we want to grab when the shop is upgraded." He said as he got ready to leave the tent. Peggy nodded thoughtfully. "I think we have at least a day, before they at the least start testing us."

Owen nodded and smiled, but as soon as he was about to leave the tent he had an idea. He quickly ran the idea by both Myra and Peggy, eventually getting agreements from both. It hadn't taken long to get Myra to agree, since she had said yes almost instantly, but Peggy needed some convincing. Owen spent another hour or so planning with them to try and hammer out the last of the new details.

"Alright, I think that's all we can do for now, tomorrow we will start and see if we cant prevent the attack from happening in the first place." Seeing as there was nothing else really to say, he walked over and pulled Myra into a hug. "I'm glad you're okay," he said, before ending the hug and quickly giving Peggy an awkward side hug. "Uhh, I'm glad you're okay too," he finished awkwardly. Peggy gave him a knowing smile, but didn't say anything else. He half walked half ran out of the tent after that.

He wasn't sure what was going on between him and Myra. He was pretty sure they both liked each other at least somewhat, but it still all felt really uncomfortable since he really hadn't known them that long. It had barely been 3 weeks since the system was introduced and yet he was acting as if they had been friends for years. Rather than think of all the reasons that wasn't super usual, he just let himself be thankful. Maybe he could find some time when he and Myra would be alone to talk to her about it, at least not an alone moment when they would be inside of a gate.

Pushing it out of his mind he walked towards where Lucas's was usually hanging out, prepared to have a long conversation with the kid. Hopefully, it would be easy to get through to him.

He found Lucas practicing his spear mastery as usual and approached slowly, watching the kid work. He had to say he was impressed. He didn't forget seeing Lucas, even if it had been temporary, holding back a level 50 boss monster. He was skilled and it was one of the other reasons he hoped that Lucas was just awkward around the others and not that he was some creep.

Intercepting one of Lucas's spear attack with his own, they began to dancing through different spear forms, each clashing with power that would sent presystem people running for the hills. Each clash sounded like a gunshot as they both began to add more and more power behind their attacks. It went on for several minutes, before Lucas raised a hand. "I'm going to need a break dude, I'm wiped." he said panting. Owen agreed but was in a better state than Lucas.

Deciding that there was no time like the present, Owen awkwardly sat next to him and cleared his throat. "Both Peggy and Myra aren't comfortable with you being around, while I'm not there." Lucas looked like he was immediately going to interrupted but Owen held up a hand. He hated doing things like this and so he decided that he would just be as straightforward and honest as possible and if Lucas didn't like it, then they would have to leave him out of their group entirely. Owen didn't mind still showing Lucas a thing or two, if they did need to kick him from the group, but he didn't know Lucas well enough to gauge his reaction.

"Essentially, we as a group don't like that you haven't really helped with anything, but still get to go clear gates with us. We are basically bordering on war with a nearby military base, but only you haven't really tried to help prepare." He had to raise his hand again as Lucas was about to interrupted. "Let me finish. I do understand that the agreement we have is that I will teach you things and try and help you get as many inheritance skills as possible, but you have to understand that that deal is currently with Xerxes, not you."

"If what you have wanted is me to have a more active role helping you, then you need to communicate that and we can come to our own agreement. But I am busy trying not to let my friends die and so I don't have the time to dedicate myself to learning skills, for you to then learn from me." He paused for long enough to let Lucas know he could speak, but he stayed silent, so Owen continued. "So, the list of things I will need you to stop doing is as follows. Stop trying to flirt, brag about your status, or just generally shadow either Myra or Peggy unless they specifically say otherwise. If this seems like too much, then I will just have to explain to Xerxes the next time I see him why I haven't been helping you."

"Stop meandering and try to think of ways to help. I know this isn't technically your fight, but it's mine, so in order for me to have the time to show you things, my life needs to not be in danger.

Lastly, if we are going to come to an agreement, then you need to stop treating me like an older disciple or whatever." Owen then stared at Lucas intently, who began to squirm under his gaze, but then he finally nodded. "Sorry," he said meekly. "I haven't been around many older girls and I'm not sure how I am supposed to flirt with them , but if they want me to stop I'll stop."

Lucas looked seriously at Owen for a second before shaking his head. "I should've realized that you had made both of them your women already." Lucas said seriously, but Owen saw the mischievous grin on his face. Shaking his head, Owen stood up and stretched, ready to find a quiet place to choose his new skill as well as peruse the upgraded tutorial store, followed up by the guild store.

----------------------------------------

Lucas watched Owen walk off, he was partially in awe. Both Myra and Peggy were super pretty and yet he never saw Owen flirt or anything. Though he did seem to have the hots for Myra. Lucas snickered to himself but then sighed. "If Myra and Peggy aren't up for grabs, I'll need to find other women that'll be a part of my future harem." He thought to himself. Because if he was going to be a future member of the zodiac, it would almost be embarrassing if someone with his power didn't have a harem.

He got back to training his spear mastery, thinking about what he could do to help everyone out.

----------------------------------------

Owen ended up returning to the clinic turned guild building and found an empty room. Closing the door and moving towards the back of the room, he found a spot to get comfortable before looking through the notifications of things he still had to do with the system.

*You have completed a class quest. Your reward is... One free weapon from the upgraded tutorial weapon shop.

You have reached Class Level 5, you have 5 skill options to choose from.*

Leaning a little further back into his chair, Owen opened the menu that accompanied the class quest reward. A familiar system window opened with an enormous list of weapons. Owen smiled remembering the first time he had chosen a weapon from it. It felt like years had passed since he had been on the beach in the tutorial, but knowing that it had only been a couple weeks at most made him shiver. Turning his attention back to the list he quickly navigated to a category page of the tutorial weapon shop.

He had been missing his bastard sword, but he hadn't needed it very badly against the previous two bosses they had fought. It had only managed to remain useful due to the electrical enchantment on it at the time. Considering the actual needs he might have he tried to think about his reward logically.

He had a spear that's quality would still last for a while longer as the chaos energy he used didn't seem to have had any effect on it yet. A spear covered his medium range attacks, so he either needed a shorter range weapon or one to help him keep enemies far enough away from him. That or fully lean into being a spearman and choose a shield to go with it. He wasn't confident enough to pick something that he would actual use for long enough to use his reward.

He closed the window and instead looked at his second notification again and opened up the class window. An enormous window popped up in front of him, listing five different skills on it.

*Please choose one option

Basic Weapon Mastery: You have shown the ability to use 3 or more weapons with relative efficiency. This skill will allow a certain level of proficiency with any weapon type based on your non skill related weapon proficiency. Every level of basic weapon mastery increases damage by 5%. Sword Mastery 2 becomes Basic Weapon Mastery 2*

*Battle Conductor: You have shown the ability to coordinate attacks and battle strategies with both teammates and followers. This skill gives you the ability to buff those who listen to and carry out your instructions during battle. 10% damage buff for those under your command.*

*Destined Fate: You have shown the ability to burst your opponents health down to zero before they were able to react. This skill is an upgraded version of Silent Execution. This attack boosts the users attack damage by 200% when they are unnoticed by the enemy.*

*Chaos Manipulation: You have shown an ability to partially mold chaos to your will, even if for only a moment. This skills allows you to partially controls the movements of chaos in the environment, using it to change mana creations and the world at large.*

*Class Skill - Polymath's Eternal Eye: You have identified large amounts of enemies and have developed an understanding of monsters. This skill will act as an upgraded version of Polymath's keen eye. This skill grants you the ability to peer through the veil. You can accurately identify people, monsters, herbs, and items. At the cost of experience, identify an enemy to learn how your predecessor would defeat the enemy type. (Predecessor must have fought this enemy type) {Mana stat of 50 requirements met.} You can see enemy stats, titles, and class." *

Owen did his best to read through the new skills slowly. Each on had merit and felt like it could be a good addition to his list of skills. The only one he truly was concerned about was the Chaos manipulation choice. While it was a tempting offer, he hadn't really been unable to move chaos how he wanted, even if it did fight back a little bit.

He wanted all of them if he was honest with himself, but who wouldn't want five skills that would drastically boost combat potential. Feeling frustrated he had sequestered himself, as he really wanted to ask the others their thoughts. He wanted to figure it out on his own though. Despite several of the skills offered being tempting he came to a decision. Keen eye was still helpful and after reaching the fifty mana stat requirement, he would be able to see some of the enemies titles and stats. So, the upgrade would only let him go from seeing some to all, which didn't feel like that important a change yet.

Battle Conductor was probably one of his more useful options for group fighting, but when he was fighting by himself he wouldn't receive any bonuses from it and he wasn't sure if it would work with only one person fighting with him. Chaos manipulation was also one of the ones he could already partially do and while he could definitely get better, he could also do that with practice rather than using a skill to do it.

It all came down to Destined Fate and Basic Weapon Mastery. Each had their benefits and had made group fights a little easier. With the experience penalty being gone as well, it was an amazing option. Out of the 3 boss fights they had won in tier 3 gates, in two of them, people had gotten severely injured. Destined fate might help prevent that, but one look at the damage made it not feel like that much. He no longer had the ability to stack damage as high, though if he was able to get off a stab with chaos energy on it, it might be worth it.

He struggled with himself for several seconds but sighed as he finally chose basic weapon mastery. His main reason was that he wasn't sure he wanted to stick with a spear and only a spear for all time. This skill would allow him to more comfortably swap between weapons without losing out on damage output. While destined fate was a tempting offer, the skill has seemed to work best with a stealthier person and Owen so far was shit at stealth. The only reason he had been able to get off as many silent executions was that the bosses previously had been distracted by his team or entering a new world.

He felt slightly disappointed as he got his new skill. But forced himself to remember that at least for now, it was probably his best option.

*You have gained the skill Basic Weapon Mastery: Level 2*

Now for the most exciting part, he now had a chance to look through the guild's upgraded shop and even had just under 4500 credits to use.
