Chapter 3: Pokémon Trainer System

Kai rubbed his eyes once and then twice, but he couldn't stop himself from seeing the blue hologram screen with '99.8%' wording that kept increasing as time passed.

It almost made him question his sanity.

'This can't be right,' Kai scratched his head, doubting the very thing that he was looking at. Wherever he turned, the text would follow him.

He closed his eyes, finding it the only peaceful place until a loud voice invaded his privacy.

"KAI!" His mother's scream almost blasted his eardrums.

"Mom!?" he turned to his right only to find his mom back upstairs.

"You don't want to go choose a Pokémon, right? No adventure!?" she asked, quite intimidating.

"No, of course not, Mom. I'll be going!" Instantly, he shot himself out of the house like a slingshot, carrying his bag that was packed by his mother and then running away.

'I hope Professor Oak will give me a Pokémon despite me being early,' Kai thought to himself as he kept running nonstop.

He was quite excited for his first Pokémon but at the same time, worried about this weird thing floating in front of his eye.

The text had changed once again, but this didn't seem like any good news.

It couldn't have been hallucination... after all, the texts were changing... or could it be... a changing/modifying hallucination? Kai was adept at imagining weird things, so it was no surprise that he would give fancy names even to things that went wrong: imagine giving a name to the diaper that he once wore as Harbinger of Poop... it was a dark past... dark indeed.

Regardless, he ran like a maniac with his tongue almost out and saliva dripping a little until finally, he arrived at the entrance of Professor Oak's lab.

As he neared, he found a few Flying-type Pokémon flying high in the sky. Not one, not two... but quite a lot of variety, at least 10!

"Wow," Kai's eyes widened as he noticed them.

"Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot... Spearow! Fearow? Butterfree, Beedrill-"

And just as Kai had named a few of them as he pointed them with his index finger, he heard a voice behind his ears...

"Ho ho ho, quite knowledgeable, aren't you?" It was not that much of a hoarse voice. It almost sounded as if a middle-aged man spoke... but at the same time, it felt as if it belonged to an old yet active man.

Surprised, Kai turned back instantly, finally back to reality as he noticed...

"P-Professor Oak!" Kai screamed, his mouth wide open.

There were stars in his eyes as he noticed the middle-aged man whom he called professor. He had a confident gaze in his eyes. He was tall and had a slightly athletic build. He seemed like a refined and distinguished gentleman wearing the white coat used in laboratories.

His brown hair, having a few strands of white in it, depicted his wiseness. A few wrinkles here and there were visible, but other than that... he was a handsome man.

"Haha, little Kai, looks like you couldn't get any sleep yesterday, could you?" Oak asked.

"Absolutely! I- I wanted a Pokémon so bad that it was almost suffocating to fall asleep! I really want to go on an adventure with my pals," Kai added as he scratched his head a few more times.

"Hahaha, I totally understand how you feel," Oak laughed out loud.

Nodding his head and taking the opportunity, Kai asked, "But Professor Oak, I'm a little early... do I need to wait to choose or can I-" he wanted to get his Pokémon as soon as possible.

Like a little girl, he was poking both his index fingers against each other as he asked this a bit cutely.

Oak, understanding what Kai wanted, said, "Well, there is a saying... Early bird gets the worm. And since you are early, why not!?"

"Really!?" Kai almost jumped when he heard this, his heartbeat palpable.

"Haha, why not? Come. Follow me," Oak led the way straight towards the lab where new trainers were going to choose their first Pokémon.

---

"Alright Kai, here we have 3 Pokéballs each containing a different Pokémon," there were 3 Pokéballs kept on a weird stand. Each Pokéball had a sticker on it. One had a small fire design, the other had water, and the final had a leaf sticker.

"Come on, choose," Oak said as he gave young Kai the opportunity.

Kai's hands almost trembled. He gulped down large chunks of saliva in excitement.

'My first Pokémon...'

He looked left and right, scanning the Pokéballs like Madara from Naruto moving his eyeballs.

"I've decided whom to choose," he moved his hands towards the leaf sticker Pokéball...

'Bulbasaur... it's the best Pokémon possible,' Kai wasn't saying this purely out of his own interest. There were logical reasons behind it.

Bulbasaur is a Grass-type Pokémon and in the intensive forest and grassy areas, he would have quite the advantage.

Furthermore, the first three gyms utilized Rock, Water, and Electric-type Pokémon which had a natural type disadvantage against Bulbasaur! So it was a natural choice for most trainers.

Kai was also going to do that... that is, until... he placed his hand on the Pokéball and something mysterious happened.

This surprised Kai, almost causing him to withdraw his hands immediately.

"What!?" he was surprised by the screen... so much that his eyeballs widened enough to almost pop out.

"What? Why are you staring at me as if you saw a ghost!?" Oak asked confusingly.

"N-no Professor, I-" Kai lowered his head instantly when further few notifications appeared.
