chapter 3: Division leader

chapter 3: Division leader

One of the most popular bars in the cerulean city is the Angels touch. The alcohol served at this establishment is said to be so divine that any person who tries it would feel as though they were touched by the hand of an angel. It was a particularly stormy night so business wasn’t exactly booming but that did not stop some of the most die hard drunks to visit the bar.

In the far off corner of the bar were two men sitting at a table. Both men were wearing what seemed to be a uniform of sorts. The uniform consisted of black leather pants and a black long sleeved shirt with the letter D inscribed in the front. The two men seemed to be anxious as if they were waiting for someone. After a long period of silence, the two men began to converse with one another.

Unknown man 1: We have been in this bar for over an hour Curtis. How much longer are we going to wait for this division leader to show up?

Curtis: We’ll wait as long as it takes Ryan. It’s not like you had any special plans for tonight.

Ryan: Says you Jackass! I had to cancel a date with that Florist we always pass by.

Curtis: How on earth did you manage that? I seem to recall she would only date trainers who have grass pokemon. Last time I checked you only have that Ferrow and Ekans.

Ryan: Hah shows what you know. I caught an oddish this morning in viridian forest. I searched the forest for weeks until I finally found a grass pokemon. Despite it being a forest all I could find were bug and flying pokemon.

Curtis: ….you are such a blockhead. Viridian forest is the territory of the Beedrill and Ferrow. While they allow other flying and bug times to roam the forest, they will not tolerate grass pokemon of any kind stepping into the forest. We have been stationed in this city for 2 months already. How is it you don’t know this?

Ryan: What!? seriously ?! damn I wasted so much time in that bloody forest.

Curtis: Please tell me you didn’t register that oddish as your third pokemon to the organization?!

Ryan: Huh? Isn't that protocol? Besides I can always catch something better later.

Curtis: I hate to burst your bubble but that’s no longer possible you dimwit.

Ryan: Huh why?

Curtis: The organization rules state that grunts can only carry 3 pokemon at a time. Once a grunt registers their third pokemon, they can no longer replace or carry any new pokemon. Catching new pokemon is only acceptable if you promoted, gifting that new pokemon to the organization or if any of your pokemon die. You are pretty much screwed my friend.

Ryan: You gotta be kidding me bro. I was only planning on dating this chick for a couple of weeks and then get rid of that useless oddish. Dammit!

Curtis: You reap what you sow dumbass. Although an oddish doesn't have much attack power, it can learn some serious poison and other detrimental attacks which can be useful in assassination missions. Of course that is only true when it evolves to gloom. So be prepared to spend most of your time training that oddish.

Ryan: Like I have much choice in the matter huh tch!

Unknown woman: I swear Curtis; I can’t believe you're still partnered up with this ape.

The two men were surprised because they could not sense the woman's presence until she spoke and instinctively reached for their guns. However Curtis quickly realized who the woman was when he saw her face and yelled out to his partner “ Ryan put your gun away!”. Ryan looked at curtis confused but didn’t holster his weapon immediately.

Once Ryan identified the uniform the woman was wearing, his face turned pale with fright and quickly holstered his weapon. Unlike the standard uniform grunts wore, the woman’s uniform consisted of a rather short white skirt with three black stripes itched on both sides along with a white tank top with the same ‘D’ insignia the two grunts wore.

In the organization, the color a subordinate wore determined their rank. Black indicated you were a grunt. Silver uniforms were for junior division leader, white uniforms were reserved for division leaders and red uniforms belonged to the vice commanders who work directly under the Supreme commander of the organization.

Seeing the expression of Ryan's face made the unknown woman chuckle a little and then turned her attention to Curtis. With a charming but devilish smile the unknown woman spoke again “ It’s been a year since I last saw you Curtis. It looks like you're still a grunt as well”. The unknown woman's words irritated Curtis but he swallowed down his bitterness and replied “Hello Stacy, So I take it the organization sent you to monitor our mission progress in cerulean city?”

Stacy: Perceptive as always Curtis. The organization gave you both 2 months to eliminate all the test subjects that escaped from the facility in vermillion city. How is the mission’s progressing?

Curtis: The mission is already completed. In fact it only took us a week to find and kill all the test subjects. We would have returned sooner but the mission stated we had reside in cerulean city and report to a division leader once a week at this bar. But we haven’t heard anything until yesterday.

Stacy: Do I hear a hint of criticism in your voice Curtis? Since when did you grow enough balls to question the way the organization conduct itself

Curtis: Nothing of the sort. We just want to be kept in the loop.

Stacy: Normally I would have smacked a grunt with your attitude but since we go way back, I'll let it slide this time. As to why you both were left here unattended, it's because we are currently at war with team Rocket

Ryan: What?! Didn’t we have an alliance with them?

Curtis: ….. I think I know. The attack on the facility was caused by them wasn’t it?

Stacy: Bravo Curtis. Im very impressed. You may a chance to get promoted with those brains afterall hah hah hah.

Ryan: Why would they attack the facility? I don’t remember the organization offending team rocket.

Stacy: It’s not a matter of offending you ape. They somehow found out the nature of the experiments we were performing in the facility and decided to steal that research for themselves. They also wanted to abduct the test subjects but they underestimated our defensive capabilities and ruthless nature. Except for the test subjects that escaped, we blow up the cages we were keeping the test subjects so team Rocket walked away with nothing!

Curtis: Ruthless indeed. Still I’m curious as to what kind of experiments the organization were performing.

Stacy: Sorry smarty pants but that’s need to know information. Not even junior division leaders have access to that information let alone grunts.

Ryan: You guys are so irresponsible! At least you should have told us about Team rocket becoming our enemies. What would have happened if we had randomly come across each other?!

Stacy: Oh is the big ape scared of team rocket members?

Ryan: YOU BIT…

Curtis: Enough Ryan! Not another word.

Stacy: you should thank Curtis you ape. Otherwise I would have sent you flying ha ha ha.

Anyway, I assume you disposed of the bodies according to the organization's standard procedures.

Curtis: No problem on my end. The currents did the most of the work. However there was a problem with one of the test subjects that I assigned to Ryan. Should I tell her or do you want to explain yourself?

Stacy: WHAT sort of problem you ape?

Ryan: Tch I finished the boy off no question but once I reached to carry the body out of the forest I was attacked by a Ferrow who wanted the body for itself. I had no problem defeating it but once I did, a whole flock of spearow and some Ferrow came out from the forest and started to chase me. I was stuck in that forest for days fighting off and hiding from those blasted birds. I eventually returned to the spot but the body was missing.

Stacy: You useless ape! Are you absolutely sure he was dead?! Where did you last see the body!

Ryan: … The outskirts of pewter city. I’m positive because I checked his pulse.

Despite Ryan's assurance, both of the grunts clearly saw black lines forming on Stacy's forehead. There was no doubt she was pissed. If it wasn’t because they were all in a public place, Stacy would have taken her frustrations mostly on Ryan but she would also include Curtis despite their long history together.

This was an important mission from the organization. Normally a mission of this importance would have been given to 2 junior division leaders and 2 grunts. However because of team Rocket's betrayal, The organization had to mobilize most of their forces and make plans for an counteroffensive against all of team Rocket's known base locations.

Unfortunately team Rocket was prepared for the organization's response because in the majority of their bases, their members were lying in wait and struck back hard. Needless to say, the organization was short on manpower so they had no choice but to send two grunts to complete the mission.

Eventually Stacy was able to calm herself down but she was still upset nonetheless. With a cold expression she looked at both of the grunts and said “ Clearly I overestimated your abilities Curtis. I gave you this mission because I thought you had what it took be a division leader one day. I was even going to recommend you take over my position in vermillion city but based on how you choose your partners, I’ve changed my mind”.

Both Curtis and Ryan stayed silent but they were both burning with rage inside. Despite Curtis scoldings, Ryan respected Curtis very much because he was very patient with him and occasionally gave pointers on improving his pokemon battle skills.

Even Curtis wanted to voice his objections but he held his tongue. He was more aware than anyone of Stacy temper and besides, she was two ranks above him. If she had killed him and Ryan, the organization wouldn’t care one bit.

Stacy: Here are your new orders. You think of it as a punishment but i could care less on your opinions. You are to remain in cerulean city for 6 months. At most, you will be allowed to travel in the areas of this city, the viridian forest, viridian city and pewter city. I will send out photos of the test subject the ape lost to the bases stationed in other cities so the members of those areas can keep an eye for him.

Ryan: 6 months?! That’s ridiculous! All this trouble for a kid that is most likely dead already. And even if by some miracle he’s alive, do you honestly think anyone is going to believe the words of a kid?

Stacy: Question my orders one more time ape. My patience with you is wearing thin as it is. You will bring the boy back to me whether alive or in the form of his remains. Viridian forest is not that big and assuming he's dead, his bones should at least be in the area.

Curtis: Fine. It’s not like were needed in the battlefield anyway. 6 months should be plenty of time.

Stacy: This is your last chance Curtis. If you fail, I won’t show you or that ape any mercy. Do I make myself clear?

Curtis:.... Roger that.

With that, Stacy turned away and walked out of the establishment. Ryan looked over at Curtis but was stunned when he noticed Curtis's angry expression. Curtis was smart and kept a cool head throughout his partnership with Ryan so he rarely saw Curtis upset let alone now.

Ryan got up from his chair and walked over. He patted Curtis’s shoulder and said “I’m sorry Curtis, I didn’t mean to get you in trouble too”. Curtis turned his head over but his expression changed when he noticed the guilt on Ryan’s face. He formed a smile and said with a sigh “you moron. The situation couldn’t be helped even if a junior division leader faced what you encountered in that forest”.

Ryan soon felt relieved when he heard that but he couldn’t help but remember the latest orders that damned woman left for them tonight. They were to spend the next 6 months in this city searching for a boy that is most likely dead. With a worried tone, Ryan asked “ Where do you think we should start our search Curtis?”

Curtis: Let's worry about that tomorrow. Why don’t you call up that Florist and see if she is still free.

Ryan: Thanks Bro. you're the best partner ever!

Curtis: Make tonight count because starting tomorrow, we will both start searching this whole city first just in case he is alive and trying to escape. Every nook and crack will be checked. You won’t have much of a social life for a while

Ryan: Ahhhh that’s no fair bro. Have mercy!

Curtis: Sorry blockhead.
