Garden of Sea and Sand

Welcome to the mountain. Welcome to the desert.
Welcome to perfection. I find myself trailing waterfalls
of silk flowers circling up towards the heavens—

ripe and rich like a Thanksgiving spread,
colors of sapphire, monarch butterfly, and blushing rose.
A meadow prowled by tigers and rabbits.
I figured only Eve and her man ever walked here.
I never imagined paradise as a beach, white sand
winking like prisms on ice. Or as a sugary
city of glass mimicking the shine of planets.
Plants hug trees stolen from the uncovered America
or the heavy, humid embrace of the South, each
glowing like clusters of sun at dusk in the autumn.
Adam must have been quite the gardener,
constructing a city of rolling, gold grain.
Others like me dance up ahead, eyes uplifted
to the golden orbs of starry storms, close enough
to touch. This feels like first home, the one
none but two ran through, tasting the fruits of knowing.
