Chapter 2 - Ears in the shadows

Chapter 2 - Ears in the shadows

The heavy silence crushed Kyle’s mind. The sight of blood was nauseating, but everyone else was indifferent. The dull look on his face hid the emotional undercurrents. He expected his heart to be beating like mallets pelleting drums however, it was unusually steady. The princess’s soft-spoken manner took him out of his stupor.

“Oh, Hero, I apologize for having to watch that displeasing sight. Oh, look at the sun setting, it seems I shall depart now, farewell Hero. Have a wonderful evening.” She spoke with a face full of smiles. But, her eyes were cold and uncaring.

The princess leisurely stepped across the stone tiles. The knight’s boots clanked as he followed her out of the garden. She left behind the stunned crowd and a bloody tongue. Everyone watched the duo’s backs as they left. The orange sun sank into the earth. The blue floral life was baptized in an orange glow from the setting sun. Surrounded by mesmerizing colors, the princess's crimson locks reminded Kyle of the colorful poisonous animals back home.

Kyle eventually snapped out of his daze and requested to return to his quarters. On the walk back he kept thinking about the scary princess. The eerie indifference the nobles displayed had also deeply disturbed him. Kyle concluded that it must be his lack of understanding of his environment. He needed to find a place to learn about this world. He inquired if there was a place that held information about the kingdom and found out there was a library in the castle. A desire to understand this world’s inhabitants and culture sprouted within him. Kyle decided to go to the castle library the next morning to scope out his current environment.

Upon returning he remembered his unnatural reaction to the event. He quickly grabbed a mirror to confirm his harrowing suspicion. Facial paralysis. Holding the mirror he took a moment to admire his handsome reflection. Although his nose tilted towards the left a little, he was looking fabulous.

Kyle got back on topic and discovered he had greater control over his facial muscles than previously. It felt like they followed whatever commands he ordered. A spark rekindled his dead dream of becoming a famous actor. But, reality slapped him in the face when a maid knocked with dinner in hand. He depressingly scarfed down the food when he remembered the planet he was on was no longer Earth.

After he ate he fell face first into the bed and landed on the pillow. A buzz from his pocket grabbed his attention. A phone, his old beaten and battered phone. Kyle chuckled at the many cracks and dents from his clumsiness. It still had some charge left and a silly wallpaper he was too lazy to change. The no signal notification at the top right mostly confirmed the reality that he was in another world.

Pushing those thoughts away he opened up the photo album. He methodically combed through all the videos and pictures he had taken. All the disputes with his family felt childish now that he was no longer even on Earth. The adventures with his uncle sent him on a roller coaster of nostalgia. The stupid stunts he and his friends did got a silent chuckle. Without realizing it he ran out of photos to look through.

His eyelids felt like lead, so he called it a night. The moonlight snuck into the room through the window. The mellow light shone on the unused candle on the table stand. I’ll find a way to get back, just wait. I still have a favor to repay.

The full moon hung quietly in the dark sky. The kingdom fell into a slumber to prepare for the next day. In another part of the castle, a maid slinked through the shadowy corridors holding a lamp. Her dark figure cast onto the walls behind her. She entered an empty room to the side and walked into a closet.

The maid blew out her lamp and waited in the stifling darkness when the wall in front of her suddenly sunk into the floor. A dark and narrow path opened up. She couldn't see anything when stepping into the path except the stale air was noticeable as she walked. Her movement was sporadic, she took a few sharp turns seemingly at random until she reached her destination.

The maid searched and pushed a camouflage button that opened a secret room. Inside the room was a booth. A person exited the booth, it was another maid. They passed each other neither acknowledging each other's existence. Once the other maid left, she entered the booth. The metal banged against the wood multiple times as she locked the booth securely.

The booth looked similar to a confessional booth, but not entirely the same. Vents were placed at every corner of the booth giving the confesser a sense of unease. The whole booth was also sealed very tightly allowing no noise to escape. The maid took a deep breath and spoke while staring at the vents in the booth.

“Your highness, the young lady performed excellently. I believe the Hero would not disagree if she accompanied him on the quest. The hidden agents successfully got the target’s heir to provoke the Hero. The opportunity to weaken the Duke’s power in the north is now available. That is all your highness. What are my further instructions?”

“Good job.” The maid felt a whisper right at her ear, but there was nothing behind her. The maid’s initial fearful look switched into expectation after hearing those words. A pink mist slowly seeped from the vents into the booth. The mist sunk to the floor and slowly swallowed the maid. The pink mist entered the maid's pores and lungs. The maid into a blissful smile and her eyes were foggy. While in this state the voice whispered into the maid's ear once more.

“You will follow the Hero, the brat, and her toy on their journey. You will be delivered Pink MIst capsules while you follow them. Save them if necessary and keep them alive, I can’t have that brat tainting the Kingdom’s image. Don’t forget to take the capsules, I’ll know.” Her tone was dark at the end.

The moon sunk into the earth and the bright yellow star flew into the sky. At the break of dawn, the kingdom’s citizens awoke and got ready for the day. Shop stalls were stocked, and horse carriages began moving. The morning light streamed into the room through the curtains waking Kyle. He bathed and freshened up for the day, but as he went to change clothes he suddenly stopped. He had no clue how to put on the noble attire in the closet. This reaffirmed that the visit to the library was necessary.

When he finished putting on his used clothes someone knocked on the door. The maid that brought him back last time greeted him with a smile. Kyle received the plate of breakfast that she delivered. After eating he went searching for the library. It took him an hour to reach the library as he had to constantly ask for directions.

Kyle silently cried tears of joy once he finally found the library. The library was a separate building from the castle, so it was quite troublesome to find. The tiles leading to the library were older and a little more worn compared to the other buildings. Two statues stood beside the entrance of the library.

The first statue was of a man with a cold expression. He wore a heavy robe and his hair was unkempt. He stood on a floating circular slab and his eyes held a crazy conviction. The second statue was of a woman who looked kind-hearted and dressed neatly. But her petite frame carried an enormous book that was a little bigger than herself.

Kyle stood in front of the two statues dumbfounded at what kind of creative art exhibit was being showcased. However, he noticed that both statues were old and had an ancient feeling of being from a different time. Eventually, he made his way into the library and passed the two ancient statues.

Opening the door the smell of paper and ink brushed against his nose. The pristine shelves and neatly organized books lined the walls. The marble floor was shiny and polished. The whole library looked entirely different compared to the exterior. The interior felt like a maze, endless rows of books disorientated Kyle and loomed over him. The flipping of pages drew his attention to a person sitting at a table.

The old man resting at the table made eye contact with him. His hair was white and he had a scholarly aura while he held a book. His smile scrunched up the wrinkles on his face showing many events he’s been through. The old man’s eyes felt like they had been through vicissitudes of life. The old man deliberately coughed and stared at the empty chair across the table. Kyle went ahead and took the seat.

“Hero, I presume?” A nod answered the old man’s question.

“Not much of a talker are you?” His hoarse voice was steady and patient. Another nod left the old man looking at Kyle with a deadpanned face. Silence accompanied the library as the old man just sat there and read. Kyle expected him to follow up on the first question, but all the old man did was flip through the book in his hand.

His impatience rose so he peeked at what the old man was reading. The book looked old and worn, but the thing that caught Kyle’s attention was the title, The First Hero. The old man occasionally grinned and sometimes suddenly frown going through a plethora of expressions. Kyle was stupified at how quickly the old man’s expressions changed. His curiosity about who the hell this old man was increased by the second. Kyle held himself back until he just couldn't hold back anymore.

“Sir, may I ask what your name is?” The old man was caught off guard by the sudden question from the mute Hero, but he recollected himself and smiled.

“My name’s not important and I don’t care what you call me, however, If you prefer, you may call me, the Librarian.”
