Leaving Home For the Journey

Leaving Home For the Journey

"THERE HE IS..."

"GET HIM!!!"

"DON'T THINK YOU CAN RUN!"

Just as quick as I had received a number of stomps by the man named Terrance, it had stopped just as fast. I could hear the shouts of men in an angry voice and my assailant, I could hear him moving away from me.

I nudged an arm away from my face to take a peak at the environment, before I could glance at the situation a few arms caught hold of me. I was propped up, being shaken by the change in position, I almost fell again.

"Many thanks, sirs," I mumbled.

"Ay lad, it is you who found the culprit. You are the hero here."

"Stay well, we'll chase after the crook."

The two men to helped me up left my side, they chased behind a small group that went after the kidnapper. I could've followed behind but I didn't want to, it was more dangerous than I thought. I needed to heal the damage I had already taken first. Fighting? I'm not capable of it, well, for the time being. Once I head out to the military, I'm sure there'll be training to be done.

I stepped in the direction heading out of the alley when a calm breeze blew through it. It was cool and carried an exceptional fragrance. The breeze felt familiar but I couldn't think about it, although the breeze was sweet, it didn't treat my burns all too well.

Just as I cringed, in the corner of my eye, I noticed a shadow block the clear view if the sky. Looking up to satisfy my curiosity, I found two silhouettes in the air. Both where approaching me. I recognized one of them, it was Father Gabe. The other person remained a mystery, neither revealing his or her face nor leaving a trace of what their gender might be.

Serenity was invoked in my heart when Father Gabe landed on the ground. Knowing that he was here, any possibility of danger had left. Father Gabe was very influential in the neighborhood, remembering the group of people that chased after the kidnapper lead me to guess that they had been gathered by Father Gabe.

"My son! You are here?"

"Yes father. I-"

"That's enough," said the head priest, "Look at what has happened to you."

Father Gabe came to me, standing proudly before me. He looked at the wound on my chest then checked the wound on my arm. The wound had been sealed, yet, pain from the burns still continued.

"It doesn't look too serious. Gabz, you said this child has no magical capacity but from what I see, this lad's body is quite resilient," said the cloaked figure. His voice was deep and his tone seemed to carry a bit of mockery.

Father Gabe stated, "That you right, all children under Lord Dimitri's shelter will be exceptional. Lend me a recovery potion, something to get rid of these unwanted scars."

"As you wish."

"Many thanks old friend."

The mysterious man laughed, "Nonsense, scars like that are nothing."

Father Gabe received a small vile that had been tossed to him. He turned to me and handed it over.

"Drink it," he said.

I popped the cap and downed the contents. It was neither sweet nor bitter. The potent liquid was green in color but the taste was tasteless. After going down my throat, the cooling sensation that arose in my chest started to spread.

I guess the potion must be working.

The burning pains that I felt all this while started to subside and the burns itself began to disappear. It didn't surprise me, after gulping the potion, the Planer System notified me on what was going on.

"Thank you," I said. I lowered my head to Father Gabe and then to the cloaked man floating in the air.

Having a closer view of the mystery man, I realized that he had been carrying something over his shoulder. It was long and tightly wrapped. Judging from that shape, I had an inkling of what might be under the uncovers. Subconsciously I used Inspect.

NAME OLIVIA AGE 28 RACE DIMLINIAN TITLE DECEASED

NAME SORDON AGE 569 RACE ??? TITLE ???

NAME GABUDON (GABE) AGE 786 RACE ??? TITLE ???

I was caught off guard their, I forgot to hide my reaction as I stared wide eyed at those two men.

"Uhm!"

"Haha-haa!" Father Gabe chuckled, "This is what is known as flight magic, my son. Users of other elements have their own way of expressing this spell but this one here, is wind oriented.

"I... see!"

I didn't care about flight magic, I doubt anyone can exhibit something better than the Planer System but I couldn't reveal the system to others. Since they believed that I was impressed by seeing someone flying, I left them to believe what they wanted.

"Come lets go home. You have to prepare for your departure in a few days," said father Gabe. He wrapped an arm around the back of my neck, urging me to walk along side him.

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

"I will meet you later then, Gabu," said the cloaked figure before he flew off.

"Father, what about the kidnapper? Kizan and boy, Terrance?"

"I had met Kizan already. I told him to bring the child back home. As for the kidnapper, Sordon will take care of it. We are lucky that he was here visiting this part of town," Father Gabe enlightened.

Father Gabe and I walked back to the church. I had forgotten how we got to this point of the town but the route that father Gabe had taken was much different. It actually took a little longer to get back to the church.

In the while while we walked, I asked, "Why would someone want to steal a kid from the orphanage. It not like anyone is barred from adopting?"

Father Gabe nodded, "Those two kidnappers were the child's blood parents."

"Huh!"

"Exactly, I happened to be in the vicinity when that couple dropped a baby at our doorstep. They may be older now but they look the same as they did back then."

"They abandoned Terrance back then, how would they recognize him now that he's older? And why would they decide to take him now?

"Good question, son. Sometimes people purposely send their children to the orphanage to be raised and give heirlooms. When the child is older they steal their child back, all they need to do is find the heirloom. I've witnessed such cases in the past. Sometimes it works out well for child and sometimes it didn't."

"My son, once an incident like this happened in the past and the child went back to his blood relatives but it ended up spilling doom for the family. I won't get into it today."

"For such people, their biggest mistake is that when once they abandoned their child, they have no more rights to the child. Hence, they must kidnap. It is both a disrespect to our Lord God Dimitri and a violation of moral integrity. Don't make the same mistake son, Lord Dimitri will not be pleased."

I nodded in understanding.

The afternoon had just begun and citizens started to pour into chapel for midday prayer. Father Gabe headed straight for the chapel and for me, I lead myself back to my room. I was tired, the potion I had taken earlier had done it's job but it was still my body that had to process the recovery. That was exhausting to me.

I opened the door to my room and entered, making my way to my bed, I slumped over. I was out in the next second.

My eyes open up again, it was a few hours later. The room was darker than it previously was. Sitting upright, I tried to recall all that happened. It was indeed ridiculous.

"I have to learn how to fight. Otherwise I'm going to die before my time."

NAME: ASURAJ AGE 18 LEVEL 13 EXP 21/100 RACE HUMAN (ALIEN) TITLE SURVIVOR OF ANNIHILATION CLASS NONE (ENABLE) JOB N/A HEALTH GOOD PLANE COMPATIBILITY 8.4/100

CLASS SOLDIER NINJA LOCKED ACHER LOCKED WIZARD LOCKED CLERIC LOCKED PRIEST LOCKED KNIGHT LOCKED SWORDMASTER LOCKED DRAGOON LOCKED BEAST TAMER WARLOCK LOCKED

SOLDIER

● THE STARTING POINT OF ALL COMBATANTS

● HAS NO LIMITATIONS ON WEAPON USAGE

"System!"

Thanks to the quest, I was able to access my class, there were several. Unfortunately, I could only switch to soldier. I didn't have the qualifications to unlock the others. The only exception was the beast tamer class. It was useful in gaining the favor of magical beasts but in normal society only nobles and merchants had a beast under them for transportation. It didn't appeal to me much so I went with the Soldier class.

The Soldier class didn't have any perks as I thought it would, however, it did give me the benefit of using any weapon I wanted. I still had no affinity for magic though. I had to wait until I level up to fifteen before figuring out what I can do with the other classes.

I noticed my Profile had changed a bit too, my level jumped up by one and my plane compatibility increased. Hopefully I'd get better benefits.

I looked at my Log, since it is something like a diary. I checked to see my recent event, maybe there was something to learn from a third person perspective.

Indeed there was. It appears that my use of Inspect has allowed me to get some experience. With the accumulation I was able to increase my level, not only that, I got to confirm that increasing my level also helps to increase my plane compatibility.

I slid my fingers through my hair with the thought that I have my work cut out for me.

*****

Two days past by and a wedding had taken place. It was a small crowd and only the residence of the church were present. Bryon and Linda got married early in the morning and later that afternoon, the newly weds left the church.

It was a happy occasion, Fatz ate a lot but not more than Kizan and we got to reminisce in our past. I did feel a little jealous, I wanted to start a life in the world with Cloe. I don't know where she is now or whether she thinks about me... all of us in the orphanage.

Another two days past and a carriage had come to pick us up. Father Gabe personally came to send us off. Father Gabe gave each of us a hug which was much different from the head priest we grew up with. I hadn't forgotten what I discovered by using Inspect. Perhaps when I meet Father Gabe again, I might know what race he is.

Together with Kizan and Fatz, we turned to board the carriage. The carriage was huge. At its front, a huge beast with a long nose was stationed there, it was the one that'll pull the carriage. At the back of the carriage, a beast of the same species was stationed there as well. It looked very frightening with it long, iron plated tusks.

The entrance to the carriage was on its side. After the coachman invited us on board, we three climbed in. I didn't carry much on me, Kizan and Fatz had more luggage. The truth is that some of my belongings were stored in my inventory. It was really convenient and made it easier to keep things safe.

Once we were inside, we said our final goodbyes to Father Gabe and the carriage started to move. There were two others inside the wooden carriage already, each to there own space. The three of us took the centre space against the carriage wall. Throwing our bags there, then sitting ourselves.

"Morning friend, I'm Tommy, my friends call me Fatz. These are my brothers, Kizan and Asuraj," Fatz introduced.

"Turan."

Turan shared a few words as we traveled. He seemed friendly. It was apparent that he came from a nearby village. His clothes weren't all that good and mud could be seen at the end of the trousers and his shirt had a tear on it as well. Turan had bright brown hair that matched his beard. We naturally didn't care for his looks, we came across people like this almost everyday while growing up.

Fatz greeted the other person in the carriage, unfortunately, that person didn't reply. His head was covered by a hood and only his eyes remained visible. The man's mouth and nose remained masked.
