Ch 3. Two Armies, One God

Spear vs axe, shield vs muscle.

A battle unlike any other exploded onto the grass field.

The beastfolk jumped over the wall of spears, while the humans tried to catch them from the air. Those who reached deep into the enemy ranks swung their axes, destroying their formations from within.

This was the beastfolks’ advantage. Their unprecedented strength and speed allowed them to pull off feats impossible for mere humans, except…

There was one human looking warrior in the middle of the beasfolk’s lines. He was dizzy from being struck by his own kind and a bright red message flared above his head.

[1% health. Warning. 1% health]

“Damn, I can’t even take a hit. Will I die if I get struck one more time?”

A smile appeared on Ares’ lips.

“Me? Get hit?”

He grabbed an axe right out of a beastman’s clenched fist and slammed it into the head of another.

“I see. Then all I need to do is not get hit.”

Ares was surrounded by enemies from all sides, who although distracted by the battle ahead, simply could not ignore the human that suddenly appeared within they midst.

“Kill the human! Die, hairless bastard!”

Ares kicked a beastfolk while dodging the attack of another. He cut the side of a panther, making it go wild and attack the other mounts and beastmen in its surroundings.

“Bwahaha! This is the life!”

Nothing could be more enjoyable to the God of war than endless battle with his life on the line.

He swung his arms like a madman and jumped from panther to panther, laying waste to the beastfolk’s lines.

Eventually, the humans capitalized on the space he created and pierced through the gap.

“Oh no you don’t.”

With fiery eyes and a wide smile, Ares turned his axes towards the confused humans and decimated their numbers until the battle’s balance was restored.

“Who are you?”

“Why are you doing this!?”

“Who?” With an axe in one hand and a sword in another, Ares laughed maniacally on a pile of corpses.

“Fools, I am the God of war! I am…”

[What? Face!! Ares]

Ares’ mood was slightly soured, yet he continued the indiscriminate slaughter. His body was slow, but it responded well to his commands.

The pain he felt from the fall dissapeared soon after, and his stamina didn’t seem to drop no matter what.

“This is everything I ever wanted. Earth is better than ever, bwahaha…”

[To block an attack, think “Block”]

Ares’ mood once again took a hit. Whenever he struck an enemy the voice told him how to do it (poorly), and even when he ran in a straight line it started explaining how to move his legs.

Annoyed, the God of war began doing the exact opposite of the phantasm’s instructions. If she said walk, he would jump. If she said block, he would counter, and if she explained how to do a sword thrust, he would headbut the enemy instead.

‘Let’s see how long you can yap.’

5 days later, nothing had changed. The instructions kept on coming, Ares ignored them and the battle continued.

“Do you guys have unlimited stamina too?” he asked a beastman before breaking his neck. “Hey, haven’t I killed you before?”

Something was off. Ares cut off the head of a random human and kept it in one hand like a souvenir. 5 hours later, hee cut ofc the head of another, identical soldier.

“Twins? My apologies to your mother.”

After another five hours he had a 3rd, identical head.

“Hmm, what trickery is this?”

[To block an attack, think “Block”]

Suddenly, Ares lifted his arm, placed his sword in the path of an incoming axe and mumbled “Block.”

[Congratulations! You have learned how to “Block”]

[To strike your enemies, raise your sword and think “swing”]

Ares did as instructed and another congratulatory message appeared. Moreso, he could sense relief in the tone of the unknown voice.

‘I’m being led like an unruly todler… To where?’

Ares thought of abandoning the battlefield, sneaking out and going to the city he saw in the distance. However, that would not satisfy his curiosity.

‘Fine then, mysterious mistress. I shall play your little game, for now.’
