Prologue

It's the small things that I miss the most, the sunlight seeping through the pale curtains as I beg to myself for just five more minutes, the colours, the fresh air and cool condensation from a fresh glass of iced tea as I sit on my worn out white porch before the start of the day, the constant sound of life all around that you wouldn't notice was there until it was gone. And it is most certainly gone.

“Why do I feel so groggy?” i say to myself unknowing of what was to come. I walked to the kitchen, some mess left over from the night before, knowing i promised myself to clean up this morning, i make my way past my old dining table now covered in junk mail and random notices. As i reach the fridge i notice the grogginess just won't let up. Feeling sick i fumble my shoes on and run out the back door to my porch where i throw up over the railing and onto my red grass... red grass? I raise my eyes to the once blue sky and see clouds, no not clouds. I raise my eyes to a crimson mist engulfing the heavens, like a virus seeping through a hosts bloodstream the mist blotted out the sun and in its stead a dull red light covered everything. I felt panic as i'm sure all people did, but in my panic i was frozen, a statue in the face of what i know now as the biggest change that my life would give me and as i stood, unmoving, they fell.

Black spires rained down from the now blood sky, plummeting into the earth as vicious and thirsty as starved mosquitos. I remember watching mine fall, i felt as if time had slowed in order to cement the feeling of dread into my brain. I remember how the earth shook beneath my feet and then I felt weightless, nothingness and then after what felt like an eternity, without warning I felt everything. Pain, agonizing pain coursing through me. My entire body pulsing as if I were hit with a thousand lightning strikes, and then once again, darkness. I woke some time after although I’m still uncertain how long, looking up at the red sky. I slowly rise over the better part of ten minutes, bones and muscles aching. I see the form mere steps from me, it’s height is at least a hundred feet tall and even darker of black than I thought possible. I hear crashes in the distance, the other pillars hitting the earth. They’re far from here but the echoes ring clear in my mind.

And then I feel it, something that wasn’t there before. An energy within me, a pull towards this obelisk. I know it has done something to me, something unnatural and I am frightened. Frightened of what is to come. I slowly return to what is left of my home, a broken house, only half standing. “what is happening?” I whisper as I fall to my knees, feeling like everything had been taken from me and in it’s place was the worse plague known to mankind… power.
